Introduction by Joy Katzen-Guthrie, '80 Class Agent

For the past several weeks, Janeen Bjork '78 has been sending notes to '78 Alumnae and Friends of '78 Alumnae with links to surveys from many members of the Alumnae Class of '78 and surrounding class alumnae, all modeled on the original surveys created by Mary Ann Tyrrell '79 for the Class of '79 earlier this year.

It has been a trip through time reconnecting to alumnae by way of the updates and photos in their surveys. But what has fascinated - and surprised - me most has been the discovery that friends and classmates from Stephens have been so close to me over the past 25 years without my knowledge. A number of them have been living in my own city or region, or close enough to be within a day's drive. Others have made significant contributions to organizations and activities with which I have been involved or which have a particular importance in my life.

In short ... our lives revolve around one another - literally and figuratively. We touch one another in a myriad of ways, not only through our friendship and education at Stephens but through a long chain of links to interests, goals, colleagues, studies, activities, homes, friendships, and life's work. Janeen's survey, this newsletter, the Stephens website and magazine, and annual reunions seek to make us aware of how close we are and to link us even more closely. From the comments of those who you who have found one another through this publication and through the Class of '78 and '79 surveys and Stephens' website and publications, this awareness has a highly empowering affect. I hope you'll check out the Class of '78 surveys yourself. Read Janeen's comments below.   ~Joy
Message from Stephens President Wendy B. Libby

Dear Alumnae,

Last weekend (Oct. 11-13), we welcomed many of our 29 Alumnae Association Board members back to campus for their fall meeting - in addition to "business," they got to spend some quality time with our faculty, staff and students over lunch, in classes and in many other venues. Our alumnae showed their support for our students and also Breast Cancer Awareness Month by attending a Fall Into Style fashion show downtown, where our students were the designers and models.

In addition, our alumnae were able to view garments designed by Stephens students in storefront windows throughout downtown Columbia. These garments (all pink - to heighten awareness of breast cancer) were designed by our fashion students out of "found objects" like rubber gloves and paper (the paper was crafted into paper cranes). The next day, our students helped with the Roll for the Cure event to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

See what fun you can become involved in by coming back to visit campus and our students?

Another project our campus is involved in this month is "Voices," a multimedia performance at Orr Street Studios in downtown Columbia. Some of our faculty and students helped put together this event, with proceeds to benefit The Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. Alumna and trustee Teresa Maledy '78 served as the "honorary voice," or keynote speaker.

What great projects. It makes me thankful that Stephens is a place where our faculty, staff, students and alumnae can come to make a difference - where we give voice to the issues that affect so many women and work together to lend a hand, to raise money, to pass legislation that improves lives.

Over the past few weeks, I've had the great pleasure of observing interactions between those who give and those who receive. Donors Saralyn Bonowitz Oberdorfer '51, her daughter Robin and husband Gene visited earlier this month and had the opportunity to see the Oberdorfer Alumnae Welcome Center in LRW, a beautiful and gracious space that welcomes returning alumnae. Daughter Julie wasn't able to come. The Oberdorfers also got to meet the student whose scholarship they support.

Ann Scott Carell of Nashville visited just last week. She was so proud to meet the five students who are directly affected by her generosity. Ann took her "Ann Scott Carell scholars" to dinner, sat in on a class, met with numerous people and spent time in Roblee Hall where she used to live. She simply wanted to see how her gift was changing lives ... and left campus knowing the remarkable depths to which it did. Her scholarship is the only reason at least one of those bright and talented students is here with us at Stephens.

Please know that all of you - whether you are an alumna giving money, time or support to the College - make an incredible difference. I see the impact every day, and I invite you back to campus at any time to witness the magic yourself.

Warmly,
Wendy B. Libby, Ph.D.

Editor's Message: Archived Stephens Newsletters And Expanded Online Alumnae Photos!

I am excited to let you know that a new online archival service for the Stephens newsletters has become available through my e-mail delivery service, Constant Contact. I have created a home page with the archived newsletters from Stephens (as well as my own website newsletters). The newsletters available for viewing online are those that have been created in the Constant Contact service since June 2007. If you would like to receive backissues that pre-date these, email me at joyfulnoise@earthlink.net and I will send them to you.

View the Stephens Newsletters online here:
http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs008/1101661286535/archive/1101846741751.html

Note that the issue you are now reading is there as well, so if you prefer to view from the web page rather than within your e-mail, you  may do so.

Also note that these newsletters are not linked from my web pages nor to any other site and are viewable only through the Constant Contact system. I have kept them that way because they contain personal information that I do not wish to make available to the general public through the web, so the archived page is is not linked to public pages.

Janeen's reunion photographs of the Class of '78 inspired me to re-visit my photo albums to find additional alumnae reunion photos and others. The hundreds of pictures taken during my years at Stephens from '76 to '80 will have to wait ... but I did scan my collection of yearbook photos purchased at yearbook photo sales on campus, as well as additional phtoos from reunions 1985 and 1995  (Photos from reunions 1990, 2000, and 2005 were already online). Looking through these photos truly brought back many memories and a few tears.

So take another trip through time and view the photos, beginning here:
http://www.joyfulnoise.net/stephens/stephens83.html

There are four pages of photos of the Alumnae Class of '80 and others from Reunions 1985 & 1995, as well as three pages of yearbook photos (both used and outtakes) from 1986-1978. Scroll through the pages via the "continue" link under the bottom photograph on each page.

Update from Alumnae Association Board: Summer Send-Off Program

Summer Send-Off Program

From Coronado, California to Colorado Springs to West Hartford, Connecticut, the Stephens College Alumnae network welcomed incoming freshman to campus in style. On behalf of Patty Burnett and the Alumnae Association Board (AAB) we would like to thank you for your support of the Summer Send-Off Program. To all of those who hosted a breakfast, lunch, dinner or tea; sent cards or care packages; or adopted incoming freshman where no current chapter or class president resides, you have made a difference. A special spirit award goes out to Rachel Gross, class of 1993 and director of corporate events at AOL, who sent over 260 laptop bags and welcome letters to incoming Stephens' students across the states, with the help of eight area alumnae and the generous support of AOL.

As so many Susies get their start at Stephens this fall and we reflect on our own fond memories of the school we hold so dear, we thought we would share the letter that went to each incoming freshman from the AAB.

Best wishes!

Dear Stephens College Class of 2011:

The Stephens College Alumnae Association Board would like to be the first to welcome you to Stephens College.  On behalf of 30,000 strong, savvy, Stephens' women from across the world you have made a wonderful choice.

Although a lot has changed since Stephens was founded 174 years ago, we know that you will grow to love the same spirit of Stephens, its students, faculty and staff and the charm of Columbia, Missouri (otherwise known as Collegetown, USA) as we did.

Together with the College, the Alumnae Association Board is here as a resource for you: to support you throughout your College experience as you define your major, travel the world on breaks, apply for internships or search for job opportunities.  Look no further than your nearest alumna to network you into a world of possibilities.

Please accept this laptop bag donated by alumna, Rachel Gross '93 and her company AOL. We hope you will put it to good use as you travel around campus pursuing your new academic careers at Stephens College. Class of 2011 we know you'll make us proud!

Sincerely,
The Stephens College Alumnae Association Board

Class of 1978 Surveys Update

The Class of 1978 is blogging! (sort of) Our class surveys have been circulating since the college sent them out with a class letter from M. Anne Murphy in early May. Since then 97 people, including members of adjacent classes, faculty and SCWW have responded. The surveys are available electronically and have been enhanced with vintage and/or recent photos.

There will be at least a second round of the survey. I will exchange any surveys from this point forward for access to the round one surveys, in their entirety. I can't guarantee you that I will be able to augment all of the surveys photographically right away. At this point, it's feeling like round two will be delivered in December.

Some people think this survey is a ruse to boost interest in Reunion 2008. To those people I say, "Prove yourself right by coming to reunion April 25th and 26th."

Yes, it has really been a virtual reunion, and I am very grateful to Janeen for her many hours of hard work and inventiveness in getting these to us. The pictures have been invaluable to me because while I've lost so many of your names, seeing your faces as they were and as they are, I remember so much and so many. Above all, I feel such pride and wonder at the collective accomplishments of our class, the amazing variety of lives we've managed to make for ourselves in all these years. Thank you Janeen, and thank all the rest of you for sharing.

P.S. Did you notice how many golfers we have among the respondents? How often theatergoing was a favorite activity? How many people love Italy? How many animal-owners there are (two dog agility competitors, Karen Schmidt Hanner and Catherine Day, and one fan, Linda Bower)? What a great tapestry we make with so many intersecting threads?

JANE ELLEN ASHLEY, Haa68jea54@aol.com, Former Faculty

On October 7th, Jane Ellen participated in the local Alzheimers Memory Walk in honor of her husband, Howard. It is still possible to make a contribution in Howard's memory. Jane Ellen writes:

"The local chapter is vibrant and provides excellent services which assisted both of us in many ways -- reading materials, support group and offers of financial assistance for respite care to name a few. They are still offering support to me through the staff and members of the support group we attended, which I revisited a few weeks ago. This is a disease which is so ugly in its effects, for which there is yet to be good enough treatment, let alone prevention, and the need for services will increase as we baby boomers age."

The walk was a great experience and, thanks to the members of Howard's Columbia Kiwanis Club, who have individually supported the walk for several years, $1,700 was donated in his memory, with more coming in from family and friends. know that some of you have already contributed to Stephens Theatre Dept., First Presbyterian Church and the Columbia Kiwanis Club's Memorial Trust Fund to honor Howard. For anyone who feels otherwise inclined, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and Boone Hospital's Hospice program would also welcome gifts in his honor, for each of these services gave us great support too. Each of you in some way have been strong supporters of Howard and myself all during the last four years and continue to do so for me following his death. He and I appreciated those gifts from you, which came in various forms, very deeply. Mostly it was the messages of remembrance, love and appreciation which were emailed and snail mailed from family, colleagues and former students, which are an absolute blessing. You enabled Howard to learn how much he was valued and respected while he was ill and still able to understand and appreciate what you said, rather than waiting until he died, which happens too often. I was and am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for the cause and your caring for Howard and myself. It is quite a tribute.

If you choose to contribute, please send your check to Alzheimer's Association, Mid-Missouri Chapter, 2400 Bluff Creek Drive, Columbia, MO 65201 with a notation that it is in honor of Howard Ashley and the Memory Walk. All contributions made through December 31st will be credited to the Walk's Campaign in Howard's Memory.

Thank you for all you have done, keep doing and may do in the future. I have an amazing extended family across this country and in some other countries!

- Jane Ellen

It's been an exciting and busy fall for my 13 year old daughter Eleri, who sang as a soloist with the West Suburban Symphony Orchestra at the Hinsdale Community House in Hinsdale, IL on October 18, 19, and 20. The show, "Broadway Our Way" featured Eleri as well as five other talented young performers ranging from 21 to 13 years of age. She will also be playing the role of Dorothy Brock in the Hinsdale Middle School production of "42nd Street" which will open at the end of November.

JUDITH CHAPMAN (nee Judith E. Shepard '72)

Award winning actress, director, Stephens Alumna, and resident of the Coachella Valley, Judith Chapman is getting ready to hit the boards again. On January 19, 2008, Judith is bringing a cast of Emmy winning stars from daytime television to the Palm Canyon Theatre in Palm Springs, CA for a one-night benefit performance of The Trial of the catonsville 9, based on an actual event in 1968 when a group of priests, nuns and lay persons  entered a Federal Building in Catonsville, Maryland and burned selective service cards in protest of Americas' involvement in Vietnam. All were brought to trial. Says Judith: "The play is not so much about politics as about human decency." After seeing a staged reading of the work by Tim Robbin's group, The Actors Gang, Judith said, "I was so profoundly moved by the play, the message, and the commitment of the actors involved, I decided then and there, to put together my own production using the best of the best of Daytime."

With the help and support of Board members of The Actors Gang, The Palm Canyon Theatre, and her company Happy Hour Productions, this project will be a  first for Palm Springs as well as a first for Chapman, who will also direct. Joining her on stage will be Emmy winning actors Christian LaBlanc (Michael Baldwin, The Young and the Restless), Michelle Stafford (Phyliss Newman, The Young and the Restless), Greg Rikaardt, (Kevin Fisher, The Young and the Restless), Kristoff St. John (Neil Winters, The Young and the Restless), Ron Hale (General Hospital), Vincent Irizarry (David Chow, The Young and the Restless), Emily O'Brien (Jana, The Young and the Restless), John Callahan (All My Children), Daniel Goddard (Cane Ashby, The Young and the Restless). The proceeds of the $60.00 ticket will go to KIVA, and organization that makes small loans to individuals around the world that they might grow a business and become more self sustaining. The Palm Canyon Theatre comments: "Whenever Judith directs or performs here, an award always follows ... we are very excited about our latest collaboration, and look forward to welcoming Hollywood to our theatre ... " There will be a catered wine reception with the cast immediately following the performance. For ticket information call the Box Office at 760-323-5123.

ANEELA HAQUE '91, aneela@andes-ltd.com

Culture:  Not By Design: In conversation with Aneela Haque
http://www.thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=6491
By Nivedita Raitz von Frentz
© 2007 The Daily Star, Thursday, October 4, 2007

Inspiration is momentary. Children inspire me; compliments inspire me; they help me stay positive. You build your own inspiration and inspire those around you. Perseverance is very important if you want to achieve anything in life." She describes herself as a "positive bomb" and certainly, bubbly fashion designer, Aneela Haque lives up to that reputation!

Convent school educated, Aneela led a conservative life, but that did not prevent her from having a wide range of interests, from Indian classical music to art. Born into a culturally oriented family, Aneela's passion for Urdu poetry and ghazals stemmed from her father. "Poetry and music are also an inspiration. I get carried away, get lost in the emotion". From her mother, she inherited a love of Bengali literary classics by Sarat Chandra, Bankim Chandra and Rabindranath. Aneela was always keen that fashion studies figured in her future, but was caught in the "female dichotomy" dilemma. Persuaded by her brother, Aneela's parents let her study abroad. Her final destination was to be the specialised Stephens College in Missouri, an all-women, fashion, performing and fine arts college. "You could feel theatre, dance, music, on the campus. It was too arty, just brilliant!"

Initially registering for a fashion degree, Aneela changed her major to fine arts. She has been painting since she was eight, mostly without guidance, but remembers taking lessons from the late Anwar Jahan. Her sketching and oil painting techniques were honed by calligrapher Saiful Islam of the Cezanne Art School. To broaden her horizons, Aneela spent a summer at the Paris branch of the Parsons School of Design and also visited the main New York campus before returning to Dhaka in 1991. Soon after, Aneela fell into advertising work on children's issues with UNICEF. This paved the way to working with BRAC. More freelance work followed and a further feather in Aneela's cap was an assignment for Nobel Laureate, Professor Mohammad Yunus, for high profile meetings with Bill Clinton and Nelson Mandela. Exposure to different development agencies and her mentor, UNICEF's Dr Sharad Sapra were the catalysts for starting her own advertising agency, "with fashion on the side". So, AnDes came into being in 1995.

Graphic design and unusual scripts on fabric make the "Aneela brand identity" incredibly strong. "I've transposed my travel experience, romance and poetry onto fabric. I introduced the concept of mix and match". Materials are bought locally, browsing in Chandni Chowk or directly from weavers. Her pioneering work of transcribing excerpts of Tagore's romantic poems and Jibanananda Das' nature poems on to fabric is very distinctive. Substantial training is involved and Aneela is indignant at the theft of some of her block-cut designs; now, all work is done in-house.

While she continues working on international UNICEF projects, with her designing work gaining the upper hand, Aneela concentrated less on advertising. AnDes is a major undertaking, with three shops at the Radisson Hotel, at Rangs Anam Plaza in Dhanmondi and at Z N Tower in Gulshan 1. With so much going on, Aneela's painting fell by the wayside, "I've poured my heart into fashion; the sari is my canvas." Travelling is an integral part of her life and Aneela has picked up fashion tips from all over the world. In 1994, she held her first solo exhibition at the Shilpakala Academy, exhibiting parts of her diary, "Travel Journal". Works in mixed media, oil, drawings and photos were on display. The fashion show calendar has been hectic over the years. She participated twice in the exclusive "Paris Comes to Dhaka" show, most recently earlier this year. In 2006, she helped the SAARC Women's Association raise money for visually impaired children through a solo effort. She has also been a regular at the "Bridal Asia" fashion show, a popular event for sub-continental designers.

Amazingly, Aneela is a black belt in karate and the school is like a second home; she is grateful to her karate mentor, Sensei Kais. "Wado karate is my guide, my stabiliser; it helps me to be a better crisis manager and reflect in solitude." The latter is her biggest strength. She has also taken a leaf out of Khalil Gibran's The Prophet to help her achieve life's balance. Relieved that in fashion she does not have to worry about corruption, Aneela is still sore about the copycat work, destroying the myth that imitation is the best form of flattery.

Alumnae Class President and 2008 will be our 45th Reunion and I m already so excited. I've booked the Stony Creek Inn, and hope all my classmates will  do the same thing. We need to really make this the biggest reunion we can have - this is the college's 175th year and things are going well for Stephens. I m a Broker-Sales Associate selling real estate in the St Louis area. I'm retired from TWA/AA, and don't travel so much any more. I have a vacation home on Captiva, Island Florida and usually get there a few times a year. I have two dogs - and a nice social life - LIFE IS GOOD. Still not remarried; divorced in 1977, and I guess I like it OK enough as I haven't settled for a new guy just to be married again. So although it's lonely sometimes, I share my condo with my adult brother and two dogs and that's fine until MR WONDERFUL comes along. See you at reunion.

CAROLYN McHALE '91, cmc@boldfacedesign.com, Boulder, CO

I moved from DC to Boulder, CO almost 2 years ago to live closer to the mountains for climbing, skiing/boarding and inspiration. Along with my move, I am now the sole owner of print and web design firm Boldface Design, and have spent the past year rebuilding the company. Recent clients include France Telecom, Level 3, the American Institute for Biological Science and lots of small- and mid-sized local businesses. I learned to snowboard, ending the season going down blacks, and have started working my way through the "14ers" which are the 53 tallest peaks in Colorado. I've already ticked off the tallest on the list as well as a technical route up Longs Peak. I plan to ice climb more this season, as well as get more rock climbing in than I did this past year. I'd love to hear from the ladies in the art dept, Searcy and Laura Stephens house while I was there ('87-91): cmc@boldfacedesign.com

JANA ROBBINS '67, Janasline@aol.com, New York City

The latest musical that Jana Robbins has been helping to produce and develop, Unlock'd, just won the "Best of Fest" Audience Award at The New York Musical Theater Festival. Talkin' Broadway called it "one of the most ravishing musicals of 2007." A Broadway transfer is planned. Also in the works for the 2008 season is The Great Game, with co-producer Randall Wreghitt (Little Women & Grey Gardens), and Syncopation by Allan Knee (author of Little Women) with co-producer Daryl Roth (Allergist's Wife, Proof, Curtains)

TALKIN' BROADWAY: Theatre Reviews by Matthew Murray
Unlock'd

"What dire offence from am'rous causes springs, / What mighty musicals rise from trivial things!" Those are not quite the first two lines of Alexander Poem's mock-heroic narrative poem "The Rape of the Lock." But had Pope been aware in the 1700s of the sparkling comic operetta Sam Carner and Derek Gregor would coax from his cutting parody of the petty squabbles of the well-off and present at the 2007 New York Musical Theatre Festival, he might well have considered a rewrite in the final draft.

Their show, titled Unlock'd, follows Pope's lead in re-envisioning modern concerns in slightly (and not-so-slightly) antiquated ways. But though stretches of couplet-heavy rhyming remain as tribute to Pope and there are more than a few Baroque riffs worthy of Bach, Carner (book and lyrics) and Gregor (music) have derived their inspiration more from more theatrical types ranging from John Gay to Romberg and Hammerstein. The result is a show that in word and song is as stageworthy as it is hilarious, which is to say quite a lot.

Two combating love stories - one between beautiful young Belinda (Sarah Jane Everman), her half-sister Clarissa (Jackie Burns), Belinda's betrothed Edwin (Christopher Gunn), and the dashing Baron Windsorloch, and one focusing on the three virginal sylphs (Alison Cimmet, Maria Couch, and Mary Catherine McDonald) and their lusty gnome admirers (Darryl Winslow, Christopher Totten, and William Thomas Evans) - give the show its bulk. But it's that lock, in this case a tuft of Belinda's hair the girl has named Beatrice, that gives it its drive, inspiring events storied enough for Greek tragedy but wacky enough for Roman comedy.

An all-out fencing scene, the women wielding knitting needles and the men violin bows, is the culmination of the ridiculousness arising from the grooming and chopping down of Beatrice (a whole song is devoted to her praise), but laughs aplenty are found too in Belinda's flightiness, the Baron's smarmy charm, and even - when necessary - divine intervention. The score, though, is no laughing matter: Its resplendent melodies and sumptuously romantic lyrics engage the ear and heart in equal measure. They're attractively orchestrated by one of Broadway's best, Bruce Coughlin, and played by a fine four-piece orchestra under the skillful baton of Eric Svejcar.

To single out a number would be unfair - too many glitter far too brightly - though I will admit special fondness for the creamy, complex harmonies of "Hampton Court" and some frustration with "By the Light of Your Love," which sounds like it was written more for the pop charts than for the characters singing it. Regardless, gorgeous voices and warmly funny performances are all you'll find from the cast, though Everman's lilting soprano (which becomes a fierce belt in one number) and flawless comic timing give her a slight, Kristin Chenowethian edge over her costars. But everyone is equally responsible for making Unlock'd one of the most ravishing musicals of 2007.

Stephens revives older part of campus

PHOTOS ON SITE: Stephens College's Wood Hall, above, has undergone a $13 million renovation by Pioneer Group Inc. of Topeka, Kan. Below, Rob Archer tells Stephens alumna Laura-Denise Maxwell about furniture found in rooms of Wood Hall, which opened in 1918, during a tour yesterday at the college.

The buzzword around Stephens College these days is "renaissance," and yesterday's ribbon cutting at Wood Hall was just another reason why. Three years in the making, the renovated student dormitories at historic Wood Hall add 38 semi-suites to house 77 students on the southwest corner of Broadway and College Avenue. "This quadrangle is back to life," declared Stephens President Wendy Libby, reflecting on the return to use of some of the college's older buildings. "And we are so thankful that we've done it in a way that is sensitive to the history of this grand old institution and the community."

Libby, who took office in 2003, has spearheaded Stephens' growth by stepping up community involvement and launching an emboldened recruiting effort that raised enrollment by 50 percent to 1,053 students. Graduate and continuing education enrollment have doubled during her administration, prompting the need for the college to expand student housing options by revisiting older buildings. In addition to Wood Hall, constructed in 1918, Stephens plans to complete renovation of Columbia Hall in January. "The most important thing is that it shows that Stephens has new vitality and that the trend is upward," Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman told the Tribune. "People need to step off of Broadway and look at this quadrangle - it is just sort of the idyllic college quadrangle - and that that's going to be preserved as part of Stephens College, one of the attractions of Columbia that appeals to me a lot."

A feared "dogfight" with the community over efforts to rezone the East Campus area to allow the renovation was avoided by Stephens' early and avid community participation. In 1998, the college ran into strong neighborhood opposition when it sought rezoning for construction of a gymnasium in the East Campus neighborhood, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Libby sought to prevent a repeat of that scenario. "We talked to each of the" Columbia City Council "members to support our vision for Stephens," Libby recalled. "When the time came, the community really stood behind Stephens." Wood Hall was named after James Wood, president of Stephens College from 1912 to 1937.

To finance the $13 million construction project, Stephens teamed up with the Pioneer Group Inc. of Topeka, Kan., which was awarded $6 million in tax credits for renovating the historic structure. Under the college's arrangement with Pioneer, the company has a 55-year lease and will operate the residence hall. After six years, Stephens has the option to buy out the lease.

Fall semester begins
Approximately 285 new residential freshmen and transfer students began their collegiate careers at Stephens College on Aug. 23. Total student enrollment for this fall is expected to total slightly more than 1,000 students, representing a 15% increase over last year and an appropriate 47% increase in the number of students enrolled three years ago. Prior to the start of classes, new students moved into their residence halls with the assistance of Stephens staff and their parents (pictured right); attended a four-day orientation during which they met with their academic advisers; and got to know their fellow classmates.

Stephens upperclasswomen also moved into the newly renovated Wood Hall
, which was originally built in 1918 and underwent a historic renovation last year. The hall houses students in one- and two-bedroom suites. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for this fall. Columbia Hall, located across the Historic Quadrangle from Wood, is scheduled to open as student apartments in January 2008.

Opening Convocation held

The Stephens community gathered for the annual Opening Convocation in the Kimball Ballroom of Lela Raney Wood Hall on Aug. 30. The keynote speaker was Rebecca Dunn Shaw '72, executive vice president for Spaeth Communication, Inc., in Dallas. Other speakers included Dr. Wendy B. Libby, Stephens College president; Stephens senior Lindsey Weber, Student Government Association president; and Dr. Tina Parke-Sutherland, chair of the faculty. In attendance, were Stephens faculty, staff and students as well as 17 young women who are taking part in the College's three-week Japan Program. The students, who will attend Stephens classes and participate in a variety of activities while in America, are from St. Margaret's Junior College in Tokyo, and Shinonome College in Matsuyama, both Stephens' sister schools in Japan.

Okoboji celebrates its 50th
This summer, Okoboji Summer Theatre, owned and operated by Stephens College in Spirit Lake, Iowa, celebrated 50 years of successful summer-stock theatre. To mark the historic occasion, a new theatre interior was unveiled in June, nine memorable shows were performed and an anniversary celebration was held with many theatre alumni in attendance. For more details about Okoboji's milestone, be sure to read the Fall 2007 issue of The Ideal Connection, the College's alumnae tabloid. Watch your mailbox for the tabloid or read it online in early October.

Stephensophia to be digitalized
Stephens' yearbook, Stephensophia, will soon be available online thanks to funding from the federal Library Services and Technology Act. The $18,445 grant will fund the digitalization of the 1900-1940 yearbook volumes by the Office of Library Systems at the University of Missouri. The Hugh Stephens Library currently houses the only complete collection of Stephensophia, many volumes of which are extremely fragile. The project is scheduled for completion in early 2008.

Save the Date: Reunion 2008
Stephens will celebrate her 175th birthday during the annual Reunion on Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26, 2008. All alumnae are welcomed back to campus for this special event, with classes ending in "3" and "8" receiving special recognition of Stephens' 175th birthday. On April 24, special activities are planned to celebrate members of the Class of 1958 and the Classic Classes. All alumnae who were honored as "Ten Ideals" during their time at Stephens also are invited to return for a special celebration to renew our commitment to one of Stephens' most treasured traditions.
