Message from Stephens President Wendy B. Libby |
Dear Alumnae,
Greetings! I hope you have had a delightful summer. Here in Columbia we have had very hot weather and very little rain, but somehow it stays humid.
We had a great experience with our summer institutes in theatre, dance and film. And, the campus has been bustling with guests; we have hosted summer camps, family reunions and weddings.
Lots of construction work too. Renovations to Prunty, new carpet and furniture in Stamper Commons, a complete uplift for the Visitors Center with our overnight rooms reopening in the fall, reconfiguration of Hickman, state-of-the-art audio and video systems for Windsor Auditorium, more smart classrooms, and the reopening of Wood and Columbia Halls.
The campus looks better than ever. Come by and let me show it to you!
We're expecting about 12 percent growth in our undergraduate enrollment for the fall, and record growth in graduate and continuing education. Come back and meet our wonderful students and share your life stories and expertise with them.
Our beautiful Oberdorfer Welcome Center on the top floor of LRW is open for your visits!
Warmly, Wendy B. Libby, Ph.D. President

Update from Alumnae Association Board |
Dear friends,
I want to share with you news of an exciting project led by Rachel Gross, a member of our Alumnae Association Board. Rachel is Director of Corporate Events for AOL, LLC in New York City. She arranged for AOL to donate laptop tote bags for each of Stephens' entering students - 260 of them! Stephens continues to increase its enrollment at an amazing pace.
Members of the New York Stephens Club, led by Rita Ann Jana, spent an afternoon/evening at AOL packaging and addressing the bags for mailing to the students' homes so they would have the bags before coming to campus. The volunteers also included Katherine Dietzen, Stephanie Sherga, Sue Delano, Karith Foster, Allyson Spellman Rodriguez, Jeramy Zimmerman, Jenny Stahl, and, of course, Rachel and Rita Ann.
You will be pleased to know, too, that in Stephens style, these were Casauri bags, not your ordinary Office Depot guy thing. Rachel says the company was started by two sisters from New York City who used scholarship money to start their business. They designed a bag specifically for AOL - with women in mind! So new Stephens women soon will be on campus carrying stylish Casauri bags in lime or navy.
The Alumnae Association sent a letter with each bag, welcoming the new students into our sisterhood. We want students to know from their very beginning at our wonderful college that its alumnae care about them and wish them the fabulous college experience that we had. Already we have had thank-you notes from new students, and we appreciate the opportunity to establish a relationship with them.
So please say a hooray for Rachel, AOL and the NYC Stephens Club for making this happen!
In Stephens Spirit, Patty Burnett, Class of 1967, paburnett@aol.com President, Stephens College Alumnae Association

Alumnae Office Staff Are Here to Assist
|
A hearty welcome to Stephens' new Director of Alumnae Relations, Kathryn Adams, who will, among other responsibilities, be handling all Class, Club, and Reunion activities for Stephens. Kathryn has been in the Graduate and Continuing Studies Department before joining the Alumnae office and is married to Stephens' Dean
of Enrollment Services, David Adams. Her email is kadams@stephens.edu.
Shannon Watkins has shifted responsibilities to take over management of the Annual Fund as well as student and parent fundraising, and we wish her much success and enjoyment of her new activities.
Stephens continually seeks the most up-to-date information on class and club presidents. If there have been recent elections or changes in officers for clubs and classes, please contact the college so they can update the database with the most current information. All class and club presidents are here:
http://www.stephens.edu/alumnae/classpres/ (Classes) and http://www.stephens.edu/alumnae/clubs/ (Clubs)

Special request: Host or Sponsor a Summer Send-Off Party for Incoming Students! |
Dear Stephens College Alumnae Club and Class Presidents:
As the Renaissance continues and enrollment grows at Stephens College, our role as alumnae club and class presidents is more vital than ever before. For incoming freshman, the bond that Stephens' Susies foster with students makes the difference between home and homesickness and academic success and failure. It differentiates Stephens from other women's colleges and larger institutions and is the reason so many students choose the Stephens' experience - for our vibrant, active and connected alumnae network.
Of course we all help financially with our endowed scholarships and contributions to the annual fund, but often times it is the little things - a letter, a phone call or a lunch that makes the difference.
The Alumnae Association Board and Club's Committee is calling on you to sponsor a Summer Send Off Party for Stephens College incoming freshman in your area. You can make the difference by hosting incoming Stephens' students for breakfast, lunch, tea, or dinner. Or, if you don't have incoming freshman in your area, you can adopt an area where no current chapter or class president resides and send care packages or a card to these special students - who have chosen Stephens - as you did.
Here is how the program works:
- Consult the list - We have attached a list of student names and contact information in your area or in areas where no chapter or class presidents reside
- Plan together - Work with fellow alumnae in your area or your chapter board to plan the event
- Contact the AAB - E-mail Amanda Hellman at alytz@rice.edu or Cara Knox at caraanderic@msn.com to let us know the students you will be hosting, the event you will be having and the date, time and logistics
- Send invitations - E-mail or mail invitations inviting the students and their parents (immediate families)
- Host the event - Hold the gathering at your house, the home of a fellow alumna or a local restaurant*
- Please let us know if you are interested in including returning students as well to your event. Freshman and their parents really enjoy meeting returning students from their area right before school starts. Returning students can provide all kinds of insight that helps ease the fears of new students.
*NOTE: Stephens College orientation starts on August 19, so we suggest holding your event at the early in August to ensure a maximum turnout.
The Alumnae Association Board and the members of its Clubs Committee would like to thank you for your support of Stephens' student current and future.
You are making a difference!
Amanda Lytz Hellman '94 (alytz@rice.edu) and Cara Stratman Knox '97 Stephens College Alumnae Association Board Clubs Committee

Marge Phillippe Kelley '52, President of the Classic Classes and a representative on the Alumnae Association Board is compiling alumnae memories of the innovative Burrall Program founded by Jessie Burrall in 1921 at Stephens College. The Burrall Program consisted of:

JOY HAYNES '93, joy@joyhaynes.com, www.joyhaynes.com, Washington, DC
I have had a pretty busy summer filled with both travel and work... I spent two weeks in China in early June -- Beijing and Shanghai. I am about to spend a week in Minnesota at Ann Marie Reimer's (my freshman year roommate, but I am not sure what year she actually graduated) cabin on a lake. We have been meeting there every summer since 1991 (except for the two summers I was in law school). Unfortunately, I couldn't manage to coordinate it with the Okoboji reunion, which is just the prior weekend! So sad.... On the work front I have been lawyering during the day (my version of waiting on tables) and auditioning and working as an actor quite a bit. Besides industrials and training videos, which are the bread and butter of the DC market, I have done several commercials over the past few months including a national commercial promoting Monday Night Football. It will air on ESPN. I play the cheating wife kissing her husband's co-worker! Hard to believe from the description, but it is actually a very funny spot. Keep an eye out for it! We also took first place in the Washington, DC 48 Hour Film Project this past May. Out of 100 competing teams we won Best Film, Best Acting, Best Writing and Audience Favorite. Missy Doty ('93) flew out from LA for the weekend to do it with us. You can see the completed (7 minute) film here: www.kumbiotakedown.com.

I moved to New York City in September of '06 and lived there for 8 months. In that time I did 3 days worth of voice-over work with 6 different directors for NYU. After that I starred in the play, "The House Of Yes" produced by RLVP Productions put on in Brooklyn, and right before I left NYC I starred in an independent NYU student film. New York has been wonderful to me so far! Since May, I moved to Okoboji, Iowa to spend my third summer at The Okoboji Summer Theatre. This season I am the Public Relations Director. When the season is over, I'll be heading back to New York, back to my apartment, and back to auditioning!

Beth Marshall '91 is the Orlando Fringe's Producing Artistic Director. The Orlando Fringe site is at www.orlandofringe.org, and you can see the Orlando Weekly review at http://www.orlandoweekly.com/features/story.asp?id=11684: "The annual Fringe festival has made countless changes over the years in order to present its 10 days of theater in an efficient manner - which, if overdone, is antithetic to the chaotic core of Fringe. This year's sprawl found the right proportion of organization and creativity. The food/beer tents out front in Loch Haven Park welcomed visitors; the schedules, high attendance, ticketing, talent and flow made it the best to date. Congratulations to Beth Marshall and crew."

PAULA ZAHN '78, New York City
Zahn to Leave CNN to Make Way for Brown By DAVID BAUDER, AP Posted: July 24, 2007, 19:38:23
NEW YORK (AP) - Paula Zahn is leaving CNN, turning her prime-time slot over to Campbell Brown. Zahn's final program will be Aug. 2. Others will fill in until November, when Brown - newly hired from NBC News- will start, CNN said Tuesday. Zahn has been at the network for nearly six years since jumping from Fox News Channel - her first day on the job Sept. 11, 2001. She said she expects to stay in television after taking some time off.
"For the first time in 30 years, I'm going to take a break here," said Zahn, 51. Although her ratings are up this year, Zahn has had a tough time competing in a time slot dominated by Bill O'Reilly on Fox News Channel and Keith Olbermann at MSNBC. Rumors have spread for months that CNN was looking to make a change.
"As all of the stories were being written, (CNN U.S. President) Jon Klein and I were talking very amicably about where we both wanted to go," she told The Associated Press. "You're not going to survive very long in this business if you internalize every rumor that is out there. To a certain extent, my staff and I were able to drown out the noise and do what we were expected to do."
She and veteran executive producer Victor Neufeld had found a niche in recent months reporting extensively on issues of race relations, and Zahn said she was proud of that work. CNN had several times changed the focus of Zahn's show looking for something to catch on, including a focus on politics and emphasis on longer-form stories. "We are grateful for her dedication, professionalism and class over the last six years," Klein said.

Class of 1978 Surveys ... Last Chance to Send Yours Today!
|
I have close to 50 responses of varying lengths (anywhere from a
few answers to a couple of questions to a four-page essay, some with
art, photos and/or music) from the Stephens Classes of 1977-1980 as
well as the faculty member already noted. At least 10 people have
expressed interest an participating and asked for more time. I've given
it to them. So while I have announced a couple of cut-offs, I'd be
happy to accept anything anyone wants to contribute. At some point I'll
release round one, I've already announced that there will be a round
two. Once the surveys start circulating, I hope to increase the amount
of networking we're doing with each other. And in turn, I'd like to
see as many of us make it to go to the celebration of the college's
175th anniversary (which also happens to be the Class of 1978's 30th
reunion and an opportunity to celebrate Brett Prentiss' retirement) as
who made it to our 10th reunion (close to 50 classmates, most of whom
never registered but as they surveys will prove, a lot of us had
trouble with the idea of coloring within the lines). Thanks! Janeen Bjork, Class of 1978 President and Nudge b_janeen@yahoo.com, (203) 698-4927 |

Beginning in August, SCACGW will host a Student Send-Off Party for students beginning their college life at Stephens. Everyone is invited and current students are especially encouraged to attend. In September, Suzanne Carbery Emery '77 will host a Potluck Dinner at her home in McLean, Virginia. A visit from Shannon Watkins of the Stephens' Alumnae Office will be the highlight of the September Potluck. A Pre-Holiday Gala is planned for November 17th at the home of Mary Josie Cain Blanchard '67 in NW, Washington, DC. This will be a special time of celebration for Stephens alumnae. In February, the club will host a Museum Tour in Washington, DC, and March will feature another Fashion Extravaganza, back by popular demand. Finally, the year will conclude with a Spring Potluck in May. The club also plans to launch a website featuring photos from recent events, a calendar and updates on members. Alumnae are encouraged to "stay connected" to the club by attending events and visiting the website.
New Members Elected to Board The Board announced three newly elected members this summer. The new Board wishes to thank the outgoing Board members, including Secretary Lisa Shackelford, '99, Vice President Meghan Stone Thomas, '92 (meghansthomas@yahoo.com) and President Cara Stratman Knox, '97 (caraanderic@msn.com). Knox has relocated to her hometown of Washington, Missouri, where she plans to continue service to Stephens College through a position on the Alumnae Association Board. "It has been an honor to serve as president of the Stephens College Alumnae Club of Greater Washington," said Knox. "I am passing the gavel to a talented board who will represent the vibrant women of Washington well." Succeeding Knox as President is Sarah R. Sandberg, '97 (sarahsandberg@gmail.com), B.A. Philosophy, Law, and Rhetoric, of Baltimore, Maryland. Sandberg is a Financial Advisor for Citigroup Smith Barney Financial Services. After her graduation from Stephens, Sandberg earned a J.D. in Law from the University of Missouri in Kansas and a LL.M. from Temple University through their Tokyo, Japan program. She worked as an attorney in Tokyo, Japan, and in Bethesda, MD, prior to joining Smith Barney. Sandberg is an avid equestrian enthusiast and was involved in the equine program while at Stephens. "At Stephens, I experienced a sense of community, friendship, tradition and intellectual engagement," said Sandberg. "I find that these feelings are retained through staying in contact with other Stephens alumnae. Serving as President gives me a chance to reconnect and contribute to Stephens College, to the current students and to fellow alumnae. I look forward to an exceptional year for the Alumnae Club of Greater Washington." Assuming the position of Vice President is Ann Little, '80/'07 (a_little@verizon.net), B.A. English, of Alexandria, Virginia. Little attended Stephens in 1976-1978 and completed her degree online in Spring 2007. She is a photographic artist and writer. Remaining in the position of Treasurer is Michelle Stackowicz '93 (chelstack@msn.com), of Washington, D.C., who has served the Board for four years.
