Between January 2-10, 2008, I will return to South Florida with appearances in the Boca Raton, Delray, and Palm Beach areas. I would love to give a program for your community, event, or congregation. Please contact me with ideas, or see my programs and promotional kit to view possibiliites for your community.
AMERICAN
MUSICAL BRIDGES
Earlier this year I provided an entry in the Public Radio Talent Quest ... an online search for new NPR hosts and programs. Among over 1,400  entrants, I was not a finalist, but my entry received many many positive responses. I want to personally thank all who listened, voted, and left comments. I was deeply touched (I would say I was left speechless - but most of you know that's impossible for me) by your beautiful remarks about my work and how it has made a difference in your life. As a result of your comments and support, I will use the concept I created for this entry, American Musical Bridges, as one of several podcasts I will create in the coming months.  ~Joy

Newly-Announced Spring 2008 China Tour
In March/April of 2008, I will join Temple Beth El (St. Petersburg) in a spectacular Heritage Tour of China as tour leader/scholar. Together we will discover the amazing Jewish connection to China and experience extraordinary sights ancient and modern. From the Forbidden City to the Olympic Village ... from wine and challah on the Great Wall to Kabbalat Shabbat with Kehillat Beijing and the Jewish Community of Shanghai ... from the ancient Terra-Cotta Warriors of Xi'an to the architecturally innovative and award-winning new Xintiandi & Taipingqiao Redevelopment Project in Shanghai to China's historic "Venice of the East" with its man-made marvel, the Grand Canal and its world-renowned silk and embroidery artisans - and so much more - we will encounter an amazing blend of history, culture, and heartwarming Jewish presence in a land where Jews have been welcomed and appreciated for centuries.

Temple Beth El's Magnificent Treasures of China Tour: A Jewish Discovery of China travels to Beijing, Xi'an, Suzhou, and Shanghai from March 25 to April 7, 2008. An additional extension is being offered to Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang from April 7-15, 2008. Find Out More

Joy's Neat News
I love to share discoveries I make on the internet as well as news of friends and colleagues. This section of the newsletter is devoted to those announcements, which I offer as a service.

My friend and colleague, Rabbi Barbara Aiello, became Italy's first female and first liberal rabbi several years ago when she was named spiritual leader of Synagogue Lev Chadash in Milan, Italy's first Progressive (Liberal/Reform) synagogue. Since then, Rabbi Barbara has established the Italian Jewish Cultural Center of Calabria (IjCCC) and Synagogue Ner Tamid del Sud (The Eternal Light of the South), the first operational synagogue in southern Italy since the Inquisiton. I'm so pleased to have worked with Rabbi Aiello in Florida before she took her pulpit in Italy, as well as to have co-led a Jewish Heritage Tour of China with her and her congregation in 2001. Read much more about her exemplary work here.

credt cardThe Oyhoo Festival runs from Oct 20-27 in New York City. Featuring over 30 concerts & Jewish events in venues across New York City, the festival is not to be missed! Check out the site & schedule here.

Cantor Deborah Jacobson
of Temple Ahavat Shalom in Palm Harbor, FL recently completed her splendid Bimah To Broadway, Act I live concert CD of her fantastic show from earlier this year. The concert was recorded and engineered by my husband Mark, then edited, mixed, and mastered in our Tune-of-the-Century Music® Studios in Palm Harbor. Don't miss the L'dor Vador Generation to Generation Musical Celebration and CD Release Party, Sunday, October 28, 2007 at Temple Ahavat Shalom, and pick up your own copy of the CD. I can vouch for how great it is! See more about the celebration here, and visit Deborah's own site here.

As a member of the Pinellas County Arts Council, I receive a monthly bulletin of arts opportunities (employment opps, fellowships, grants, scholarships, conferences, seminars, workshops, website resources, and more) in the Tampa Bay area and nationally. It's a fantastic resource. You can request to be on the mailing list as well. See the latest arts newsletter here.

Joy Small PicI've had the privilege of knowing Joe Vass & his group Klezmerica and hearing them perform over the years. Joe's fantastic original show, Gershwin The Klezmer, has been presented from one coast to the other; I caught a great production in Coconut Grove that featured my friend & colleague Bob Marinoff, who now resides in Fort Myers. You should consider bringing it to your community. Check out the Klezmerica site and download 8 free mp3s here.

If you haven't visited the Judaica Sound Archives, you don't know what you're missing. A service of Fla. Atlantic University in Boca Raton, the site contains hundreds of rare to current Hebrew and Yiddish recordings that you can search by title or by recording and hear fully online at no charge. Bring up the site here and simply listen to the stream of music ... it will take your breath away. Consider donating your Judaic recordings the archives. And check out the recordings of Cantor Shimon and Ilana Gewirtz, now in Delray and formerly serving Congregation B'nai Israel in St. Petersburg, along with recordings by Gladys Gewritz Hedaya, Shimon's siter. The Gewirtz's rare recordings from Israel are part of the collection and are a delight. Shimon & his sister Gladys co-wrote Your People Are Mine, a outstanding original musical re-telling of the Book of Ruth that has been presented in Israel and in Florida and in which I appeared as Naomi in the original Florida production that starred many of Tampa Bay's cantors and cantorial soloists. You can purchase that soundtrack in my Online Store.

Here's another fantastic online resource: The American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS), featuring an extensive searchable collection of American Jewish History. Current features include portraits of early American Jews, Archive of the American Soviet Jewry Movement, American Jewish HIstory in Images, Exhibition of Jewish Chaplains at War. Visit the site here.

LoraFriend & Colleague Lora Cain, with whom I have worked in the radio, voice over, and music industries, has one of the finest voices in the business. Lately, like Chicken Man, she's everywhere!! Visit her home site to hear her voice samples, her my space page to hear her recently released solo CD, and her You Tube pages for her Southern Guide to Internet Dating series (recently featured on the Rachel Ray Show!)

Friend & Colleague Kevin Frye of Tampa has created Bayside Entertainment, an agency featuring bands, dj's and performers throughout Florida. Visit Kevin's Bayside site, along with his page for the Mike Eisenstadt Band, where you can hear some great new recordings.

Friend & colleague, artist Kathy Iwanowski of Dunedin, FL, has created an association connecting art and health in corporations, education, healthcare, and nonprofit settings. A tireless advocate for the arts and artists, Kathy's sites are worth your time. Visit her home site here and her International Association of Nurse Artists site here. Kathy was an active participant in the Unity Third Thursday Café that I created for Unity Center For Today in Tampa in years past.

Joy Small PicFriend & colleague, Afsaneh Noori of Tampa, whose exquisite art was also featured in my Third Thursday Café series, has been involved with an extraordinary series of empowerment projects. Her Change Thrivers book and program is designed to grow one's inner power and system of support. Visit Afsaneh's magnificent site here and more about Change Thrivers here.

I had the privilege of being a contributor to the Second Edition (2007) of the Encyclopedia Judaica. View sample articles and a history of this significant publication, or purchase it here.

Percussionist on the Loose! Friend & Colleague Vonn New, formerly of Tampa, creates amazing music using acoustic percussion, laptop, flutes, poetry, and found sounds. Vonn works solo & in collaboration. The folks in Hyde Park, NY now have the pleasure of hearing her, as she makes her home there now. Her distinctive music is available for house concerts, congregations, museums & galleries, schools, spiritual groups, and intimate settings. Visit her site here.
