Introduction by Joy Katzen-Guthrie, '80 Class Agent

I'm already fired up about Reunion 2008! One hundred seventy-five years of Stephens history and service, and the college will celebrate it with a whoop and a flourish. Reunion dates for the coming six years are below: make a note now and plan your year around your return to the community that has had one of the greatest impacts on your life.

May ended another semester on the Stephens campus. Summer embraces Columbia and all of us. As I prepare this newsletter, I am in awe and appreciation of the contribution Stephens alumnae make all across our planet. Our pursuits, creations, achievements, and faith transform limitless communities and lives.

The newsletter has a new look as I have taken the plunge and arranged for Constant Contact to supply my email delivery needs. Through this service, I hope to keep spam blockage to a minimum. Besides ... the newsletter looks a heck of a lot better, doesn't it?! May summer bring you and your loved ones many fun and fulfilling days.
Message from Stephens President Wendy B. Libby
Dear Alumnae,

Summer is upon us! We celebrated the Class of 2007 at our May 5 Commencement and look forward to welcoming our largest incoming class in recent years this August! As of mid-May, deposits for the fall term are running 13 percent ahead of last year. And, in our graduate and continuing studies program, course enrollments are up a huge 43% from summer 2006 to today. We continue to grow and blossom.

If you are curious about the summer activity taking place both on campus and up in Iowa at our Okoboji Summer Theatre, be sure to visit the web site, www.stephens.edu. Not only will you learn about our big bash at 'Boji on July 28 to mark its 50th year, but you will also learn more about our annual summer riding program, Summer Theatre Institute, Summer Dance, Summer Film Institute (still enrolling-welcoming all women regardless of age!), summer registration for new students, and our new K-5 kids summer writing program.

The site changes constantly with new updates and photos. If you were unable to join us for Reunion 2007 and want a peek at the fun, visit our 2007 Reunion Pages. We had a fabulous time!

Enjoy your summer, and I look forward to seeing you at 'Boji in July or on your next trip back to Stephens!  Your love and support mean so much to Stephens.

Warmly,
Wendy B. Libby, Ph.D

AAB Careers Committee Update

As a member of the Careers Committee of the Stephens AAB Board, I am inviting Stephens Alumnae to share their expertise with current Stephens students by participating in "Alums in the classroom." If interested, alums can contact Karen Shelton directly at kshelton@stephens.edu. All career fields are welcome. We could certainly use more alums who are in the field of fashion.

Thanks,

AAB Classes Committee Update

The Classes Committee of the Alumnae Association Board needs your help. Stephens is looking for alumnae with no current address or email on file. If you aren't receiving information from Stephens via email and/or regular mail, please send your information to Shannon Watkins, Director of Development Programs at Stephens (swatkins@stephens.edu). Also, if you have current information on other alumnae, please send that as well. Visit the Alumnae Association Board section of the Stephens Web site (www.stephens.edu) for tips on locating lost alumnae.

Share your information with classmates on the "Class Notes" section of the alumnae newspaper. This is a wonderful way to get back in touch with classmates by sharing personal and professional successes. It's also the most read section of the newspaper! Please send this information to Shannon Watkins.

Mark your calendars for April 24-26, 2008 and call your classmates! It is the 175th reunion of Stephens College, so let's make it BIG! If 2008 is your reunion year, please make plans to come. If not, make plans anyway to check out the amazing renovations of LRW along with Wood and Columbia Halls! It's a very exciting time at Stephens under the outstanding leadership of Dr. Wendy Libby, so come and see everything for yourself. More information will be available on the Stephens web site very soon.

For more information about the Classes Committee, e-mail Neel Stallings '67, Chair of the committee at neelstallings@earthlink.net.  We will see you in April!!

Stephens 2007 Women's Summer Film Institute

The Stephens College Summer Film Institute is a two-week intensive filmmaking experience for aspiring women filmmakers, taking place on the Stephens campus July 9 - 22, 2007. It seeks to build on the success of the first SFI and continue to develop Stephens College - and Columbia, Missouri - as a destination for the next generation of women filmmakers.

July 9-22, 2007: Giving women the tools they need to tell their own stories
http://www.stephens.edu/academics/programs/massmedia/postcard/postcard.html

Last summer, forty women students from across America spent two weeks working side by side with working film professionals. This summer, the first week will offer a variety of master classes, hands-on directing experiences, and workshops for the students.  The second week will then put the skills that the students have been working on into production, as the SFI shoots a short film, written by screenwriter Rosanne Welch, and directed by indie producer/director Jennifer Farmer.

Food/housing will be on the Stephens campus, which will also serve as the location for filming. Each student will get hand-on experience with a camera at some point during the Institute.

Classes will include:
  • Developing a Script for TV and Indie Film
  • Pre-Production: Breaking Down a Script for Shooting
  • Budgeting Your Credit Card Movie
  • Directing Actors for the Camera
  • Lighting for Digital Filmmaking
  • Framing Your Shot - Composition on Camera
  • Script Supervisor: The Best Unknown Job in Hollywood

Announcement from the Alumnae Class of 1978

The most recent class of 1978 letter is circulating right now. It includes a letter from Anne Murphy and a class survey (which looks a lot like the Class of 1979 survey that Mary Ann Tyrrell, President of the Alumnae Class of '79, sent out earlier this year). As Mary Ann and her Co-President Dennis Garvin invited non-class members to fill out their questionnaire -- and given the interest we have in the Stephens community that transcends a specific graduation year -- I'd like to invite anyone whose interested in filling out a survey.

Class of 1978 members and friends of the Class of 1978, please e-mail me for a copy of the survey as a word document. I will send it to you immediately.

Thanks!

LINDA SCHWARTZ BARRESI '77, lindabarr@earthlink.net, Orlando, FL

Just a highlight for me: my daughter Marissa Barresi just graduated last week from Stephens. It was such a thrill to have my mother '51, two sisters '75 and '83 and myself '77 - all Stephens grads - there for the event. The college looked great and we were so pleased with the incredible progress Wendy Libby has achieved in such a short time. My daughter graduated Cum Laude, a far cry from my achievements. She leaves in a few week to New York City working for a fashion line. It's such an excited time for us all. I just had to brag a bit. ~Linda Baressi

EARL COLEMAN, Former Music Faculty, coleman_earl@colstate.edu, Columbus, GA

I was in Columbia in April to be at the memorial service for one of my mentors and was able to see some of the wonderful things happening at Stephens. I heard nothing but fabulous reports about President Libby.

A couple of weekends ago I was in St.Louis for a belated 60th birthday party given to me by three of my former Hickman High School Students (classes of '74 and '76) and a former colleague at Hickman High in Columbia, MO. They really surprised me with the presentation of  the "C. Earl Coleman Music Scholarship" at the University of Missouri-Columbia, an endowed scholarship, plus a proclamation from the Missouri House of Representatives, and a memory book filled with notes from former students, friends and family throughout the U.S.  One of the most touching notes was from Beverly Nick Kyriakos from the Stephens music faculty. I am still on Cloud Nine!

On the student front, one of my students, Michael Sumuel, baritone, took First Place in the Young Artist Voice Competition of the Music Teachers National Association's national auditions. This is the most prestigious award for a young college singer and I was happy to be in Toronto when he won the award.

We have hired a new director of the school of music here, so as of July 1st, I will only be dean and voice teacher. I can't wait to have time to practice again.

KARITH FOSTER '96, karith@hotmail.com, New York City

This month I won "Comedian of the Year" Award" from New York City's Talent in Motion Magazine. It was a pretty awesome honor. I also have a special surprise in the works ... not for press yet, but you'll be the first to know when it is confirmed.

I also have news that's not my own to share, but I know she won't toot her own horn. My best friend Kayla McCormick ('96) who's in Chicago is one of the newest Associate Producers at Harpo Productions. That's right! My girl's working for Oprah. How exciting is that!!! So cool!

NANCY GERNAND '88, nangernand@gmail.com, Jupiter, FL

I am very interested in being involved with Stephens Alumnae. I graduated in 1988 and value my experience at Stephens a great deal. Upon graduation, I moved back to my home town in Minnesota and was involved in our annual club luncheon. I loved reconnecting with women of all generations who attended Stephens. There is much to be said of the rich tradition of sisterhood, and I miss that connection.

My husband and I moved to Jupiter, Florida a few years ago and I was disappointed to learn that there was no alumnae club in Palm Beach County. I checked the map on the website, and there are 122 alumnae here! I would love to get something started on the East side of Central Florida, and who knows, we could end up with a huge group meeting in Orlando one day!!!

I would like to start by mailing out an invite to alumnae in Palm Beach County and perhaps those in Martin and St. Lucie (Treasure Coast) too. We can start calling as a follow-up and perhaps set up an easy happy hour or coffee meeting in a central location (West Palm?) ...  nothing formal, but something to see if we can pull together a small group of interested women to start something up.

I would love to hear from Palm Beach, Marin, and St. Lucie County alumnae. Email me or call, and I hope we can get an alumnae group going in our area.

5.19.2007
Dear Family & Friends,

Greetings from Jackson, Mississippi. We are pleased to say that Karen graduated from Belhaven College with a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a emphasis in piano performance and composition. Furthermore, she graduated with the highest honors possible - Suma Cum Laude. As I write, Karen is in Northfield, Massachusetts for a very exciting 10-day prayer summit before beginning her new role as the Director of the Academy of the Arts at Covenant Presbyterian Church here in Jackson. In addition, she will continue to minister to and teach, her many music students.

Daniel just finished his Freshman year here at Belhaven and distinguished himself in many ways on campus, in performance and in his area of music, guitar, composition and theatre. This summer he is head cook for a Christian Camp in West Virginia and will return to Belhaven College this fall as a sophomore to continue his music studies. Ryan continues to sing and play keyboards in his band, GOODBYE ELLIOTT. If you know about MYSPACE, you can find the band's webpage and even purchase their new CD if you'd like. He lives in West Hollywood with the band.

May 26th will be my 60th birthday. After 4.5 years working here at Belhaven, I am leaving to pursue ministry through a one-man show based upon the life and journals of 17th century John Wesley, a famous English evangelist. I have been working on the script for several months and am getting close to launching the production. Mid June, Karen and I will be traveling to Williamsburg, Virginia to get fitted for my period costume. (If you would like to contribute to this ministry or have me come and share with you and your church, please let me know of your interest and I will be so pleased to get back to you.) My years at Belhaven have been blessed ones and I have had the opportunity to grow, learn and minister. Our new contact information is below. We look forward to hearing from you.

FLOY LEUENBERGER '57/'73, fcl@prodigy.net, The Villages, FL

The '07 Reunion was just wonderful. We had a blast. Our Class joined the Classic classes, as it was our 50th. The whole time was great from the beginning to the end. We attended a Tea and of course wore our hats and gloves, as we were always required while attending school. Some students wore some of the dresses worn in '55 +.

We saw performances from the dance dept., the vocal groups, and even spent a short time out with the horses. The gathering and readings in the Chapel brought back many memories. We were wined and dined and of course lots of talk, talk, talk. We enjoyed a visit with Dawn Wells, who was in the class after our class. She looks wonderful and a couple in our class looked as if they had stepped out of a time capsule. Cricket Hunt and Jeri Hafter were so like they were in '55-57. Some of us though had put on some weight and I have changed my hair so many times I don't resemble myself at all. But, they all said they recognized my voice. It didn't really matter what we looked like, the delight of being together and the love that surrounded us was felt by all.

We are talking about going back next year for the 175th birthday. ~Floy

THE GREAT GAME which I am producing with Randall Wreghitt (my co-producer on LITTLE WOMEN) had its pre-Broadway developmental production thru Theater Previews at Duke in January and February. Then I appeared in THE AS IF BODY LOOP at The Actor's Theater of Louisville's New American Play Festival.  Back in NY on April 18, my birthday, I did my newly redirected version of ONE HELL OF A RIDE! (The Songs of Cy Coleman) at The Laurie Beechman Theater to an SRO house. I will be doing an encore performance on Sunday, June 3 at 7:00 PM. Reservations: 212 - 695-6909. And last, but certainly not least, I will be directing THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG at Okoboji this summer as it celebrates it's 50th birthday!

COLORADO: DENVER ALUMNAE CLUB
The Denver Alumnae Club has disbanded, effective September 1, 2006. The Club disbanded once before--in the 70's when many women went to work outside the home. It reorganized in 1988 under the leadership of Ramona Adams Kemper '59, Denise Girtin Daniell ' 72, Sandy Seberg Busby '79, and Ann Willett Kingery '58. The club soon grew to a membership of 100+. During this time, the club was faithful to its mission--which included funding a $50,000 Endowed Student Scholarship. Club members will continue to serve and network among fellow alumnae in support of Stephens preparing women for the future. Alumnae are encouraged to continue supporting the vibrant Renaissance of Stephens through gifts to the Annual Fund and the Colorado Endowed Scholarship Fund. The club cookbook "Stephens Remembered--Recollections and Recipes" remains available through Ramona Adams Kemper '59, 103 Grandview Circle, Mead, CO 80542, rbkemper@aol.com. The cookbook will also continue to be available at the college BookShelf, and as advertised in The Ideal Connection. (All proceeds support the Endowed Scholarship Fund.) ~Ann Willett Kingery '58, ahkingery@excite.com, ph: 303.779.0045

New Members Elected to Board
The Board announced three newly elected members this summer. The new Board wishes to thank the outgoing Board members, including Secretary Lisa Shackelford, '99, Vice President Meghan Stone Thomas, '92 (meghansthomas@yahoo.com) and President Cara Stratman Knox, '97 (caraanderic@msn.com). Knox has relocated to her hometown of Washington, Missouri, where she plans to continue service to Stephens College through a position on the Alumnae Association Board.  "It has been an honor to serve as president of the Stephens College Alumnae Club of Greater Washington," said Knox.  "I am passing the gavel to a talented board who will represent the vibrant women of Washington well." Succeeding Knox as President is Sarah R. Sandberg, '97 (sarahsandberg@gmail.com), B.A. Philosophy, Law, and Rhetoric, of Baltimore, Maryland. Sandberg is a Financial Advisor for Citigroup Smith Barney Financial Services. After her graduation from Stephens, Sandberg earned a   J.D. in Law  from the University of Missouri in Kansas and a LL.M. from Temple University through their Tokyo, Japan program. She worked as an attorney in Tokyo, Japan, and in Bethesda, MD, prior to joining Smith Barney. Sandberg is an avid equestrian enthusiast and was involved in the equine program while at Stephens. "At Stephens, I experienced a sense of community, friendship, tradition and intellectual engagement," said Sandberg. "I find that these feelings are retained through staying in contact with other Stephens alumnae. Serving as President gives me a chance to reconnect and contribute to Stephens College, to the current students and to fellow alumnae. I look forward to an exceptional year for the Alumnae Club of Greater Washington." Assuming the position of Vice President is Ann Little, '80/'07 (a_little@verizon.net), B.A. English, of Alexandria, Virginia. WISCONSIN: MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN ALUMNAE CLUB
The Stephens Alumnae Club in Milwaukee continues fund raising to increase the Carol Soik Wisconsin Scholarship payout to the recipient, Kirsten Hagedorn, a theatre major from Eau Claire, WI. So far we've raised $2200 in the past 2 years. We had our annual Christmas gathering at the home of Margaret Helminiak Gile '70 of the Alumnae Association Board with 13 alumnae in attendance plus several husbands. One of the husbands conducted a live auction of White Elephant gifts each attendee was asked to bring. Amid lots of cheer & laughs the club raised $345 that night. Having a White Elephant sale/auction is an easy way to raise money! We'll be planning a repeat next Christmas! Our spring event will be an afternoon tea in an elegant Milwaukee landmark restaurant. Date is yet to be determined. ~ Anne Ruttger Neafie '78, neafie@wi.rr.com, 262.797.6562

Our next issue will be July 2007. Through the Constant Contact email service, you are now able to subscribe or unsubscribe below from the newsletter or from the Stephens pages on my website, but you may always reply also to let me know you wish to make a change. The service offers the newsletter in either HTML or plain text version, but I do not recommend the plain text; because of the length of this newsletter, it looks like a large jumble. If you prefer a plain text version only, please email me at joyfulnoise@earthlink.net. I will send you the newsletter in the plain text format that I previously used. Of course, I hope you will find that the new HTML format is much clearer to read and is fine for you.

As you can see from this issue, a large number of emails are coming back to me as undeliverable. I feel sure these individuals wish to continue to receive the newsletter ... but likely forgot to let me know about their address changes. Please keep me updated on upcoming address changes. If you are in touch with anyone listed as undeliverable, please let me know the new address or ask that contact to let me know in order to be added back to the mailing list. And thank you for sharing the newsletter with alumnae, faculty, staff, and friends of the college.  ~Joy
