Nickels for Non-Profits

 

Shop at Whole Foods Market, Potrero Hill between now and April 13th and be sure to bring in your own bags for groceries so you can donate the five cent credit (per bag) to HPP as part of the Nickels for Non-Profits program. HPP will receive the funds donated during that quarter. The store is at 450 Rhode Island at 17th Street in San Francisco.

T. Berry Brazelton Visits HPP
Baby Doctor Makes a Housecall Photo of T. Berry Brazelton
T. Berry Brazelton, M.D., the pediatrician who has given advice to moms and dads for generations, visited HPP earlier this month. He was accompanied by Joshua Sparrow,M.D., director of special initiatives at the Brazelton Touchpoints Center, child psychiatrist at Children's Hospital in Boston and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School.
 
They met with HPP Exectuive Director Martha Ryan; HPP Program Director Lee Heagerty; HPP's Training and Wellness Coordinator Nancy Frappier(above right); and midwives and mothers from San Francisco General Hospital's CenteringPregnancy program.
 
Experts on pediatrics, child development and parent-child relationships, Dr. Brazelton and Dr. Sparrow have co-written written several books about children and infants, including the Touchpoint: Your Child's Emotional and Behavorial Development series. Brazelton, who is 89, is clinical professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2007
2007 Birth and Housing Statistics

 

BIRTHS: Training and Wellness Coordinator Nancy Frappier reports that in 2007, HPP clients gave birth to 157 babies (85 boys and 72 girls). 95% (149) had healthy birth weights of 5lbs 8ozs or higher (one had low birthweight because he was premature) and 98% (154) were born drug free.

 

HOUSING: Housing Contract Manager Renu Karir reports that in 2007, HPP assisted 478 families in obtaining housing funds, including assistance with move-in deposits and/or first month's rent, ending homelessness for 919 children.

Support for People with Pregnancy Loss
 
Photo of Julie MitraHPP Family Case Manager Julie Mitra runs Grupo Amparo, a Spanish-speaking support group at St. Luke's Hospital for parents and families who have lost a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth, or death during or after birth. In addition, Julie is in discussions with the University of California San Francisco to provide grief counseling via the phone to UCSF families who have lost children. Poetry Battle at The Beat Museum

POOR Magazine hosts the "Poetry Battle for ALL the Sexes" fundraiser on Feb. 14th, Valentine's Day, at The Beat Museum (540 Broadway at Columbus in North Beach). Photo of Laure McElroyPoet laureate Jack Hirschman serves as the referee/ ring announcer, devorah major reads the opening love poem, plus HPP's Community Health Worker Laure McElroy (right) may be a contender.  $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place, and $25 for 3rd . Entrance fees: $20 to contend, $15 for spectators, but NO ONE IS TURNED AWAY FOR LACK OF FUNDS.
 
 
 

Oswald Becomes a Citizen
