Why promote wellness?

Worksite health promotion is an investment in your company's most important asset - your employees.  Studies have shown employees are more likely to be on the job and to be performing well when they are in optimal physical and psychological health.  Employees are more likely to be attracted to, remain with, and value a company that values them.  Worksite health promotion can improve your company productivity in a number of ways:
  • Attracting the most talented workers
  • Reducing absenteeism and lost time
  • Improving on-the-job time utilization and decision making
  • Improving employee morale, which leads to a reduction in turnover
In addition to improved productivity, wellness programs also prove to be an effective tool in reducing health care costs by decreasing your employee's chances of suffering from disease.  Wellness programs also act as a preventive tool by screening and diagnosing diseases while they are still in an early stage and are treatable.
What is trans fat and why is it unhealthy?
Carrie Scherpenberg

friesSo what are trans fats, and why are they so unhealthy? Trans fat is the common name for a type of unsaturated fat with trans-fatty acid(s). Trans fat has been chemically altered by a process called hydrogenation, which turns healthy fat into solid, unhealthy fat by adding hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils.  Trans fat is linked to increased "bad cholesterol" and decreased "good cholesterol." It is also linked to increased triglyceride levels.  All of these factors contribute to heart disease and insulin resistance. Some doctors recommend avoiding trans fat altogether, because even just three grams of trans fat daily actually can double your risk of heart disease.
What is a lipid panel?
Kelli Finn

When employers provide a wellness program, they often bring in an outside vendor to administer a wellness assessment for their employees.  During this assessment, wellness vendors commonly use a lipid panel test.  By definition a lipid is a general term for fats and oils, waxes, steroids, and terpenes.  The common property is insolubility in water and solubility in hydrocarbons, chloroform and alcohols.  Lipids are found in your blood and are stored in tissues.  The term panel in its intended purpose here is defined as a sample taken from a list or group of people for testing purposes.  A wellness lipid panel test, is a blood test that measures lipids - fats and fatty substances that your body uses as a source of energy.

A lipid panel measures:
  • Total cholesterol level
  • Triglyceride level
  • HDL "good" cholesterol level
  • LDL "bad" cholesterol level
