A wellness program, or a health promotion program, is an organized program intended to assist employees and family members in making voluntary behaviorial changes that reduce their health risks and enhance their individual productivity.  It should motivate employees to become healthier individuals on a day-to-day basis.  Why offer a wellness program?  Numerous studies show that money invested in a wellness program will save money over time through lower health care costs.  A few examples of wellness programs that employers may offer are smoking cessations, weight management, health risk assessment, and health coaches.

Smoking cessation programs offer high returns on investment, reaping improvements in employee health and productivity for a relatively small cost. Providing employees with information, access to tobacco cessation medication, and referrals to telephone counseling services are effective interventions for reducing the prevalence of smoking at the workplace. Telephone counseling, in particular, is twice as effective at reducing smoking as other interventions and may be provided at no charge through a state program.

In addition to the tobacco-related diseases and deaths, tobacco use results in higher absenteeism, lower productivity at work, and increased costs for health care and life insurance for employees.

What is a Preauthorization Requirement in Healthcare?

Kristen Mumper

doctorMedical carriers require preauthorization for certain medical services or procedures.  This means that a provider must call or notify the carrier of a patient's upcoming procedure.  The carrier will then approve the service as a covered benefit if it is medically necessary.  If the procedure is not preauthorized, the claim can be denied or the patient can be charged a penalty. Examples of benefits that often require preauthorization include, but are not limited to, the following:  chiropractic visits, physical therapy, mental health visits, surgery, and certain prescription drugs.
