The NHA Research Library Image Archive was awarded the annual John A. and Katherine Lodge Stewardship Award from the Nantucket Preservation Trust. NHA & TWN present three nights of Orson Welles' Moby-Dick Rehearsed at the Whaling Museum.

 New Exhibition: Lost on a Reef   

The Whaling Museum proudly hosts the 2012 world premiere exhibition of artifacts retrieved from the 1823 Nantucket whaleship Two Brothers, in collaboration with NOAA. This exhibition presents rare treasures recovered by maritime archaeologists at the wreck site of the Two Brothers on French Frigate Shoals in the Hawaiian Islands.

 

Lost on a Reef highlights findings, photographs, and artifacts from nearly two years of research by maritime archaeologists.

 

The exhibition opens on June 30, 2012 in the Whaling Museum and will be celebrated with a formal lecture and reception on August 16, 2012 with special guest Dr. Kelly Gleason, the project's lead marine archaeologist.

History Buffs Bike Tour 

Wednesdays through October

 

Visit the island's historical sites with Nantucket Bike Tours & the Nantucket Historical Association. Your trained guide will pedal with you to three NHA properties for private tours by expert historians and interpreters. The bike tour rolls at a very leisurely pace but offers a glimpse at "extreme history!"

Nantucket Community Music Center guests Baroque violinists Malgorzata Ziemnick and Judson Griffin join Mollie Glazer and others in a performance of chamber music from the Baroque period. Sounds of Baroque violins, viola de gamba, cello, and harpsichord will fill the Quaker Meeting House as we celebrate one of the richest and most diverse periods of music.

The NHA and Theatre Workshop of Nantucket (TWN), in partnership with WCAI 91.1 FM, are pleased to present Moby-Dick Rehearsed. Written by Orson Welles in 1950, this one-act play is both a celebration of the stage and testimony of the enduring legacy of Herman Melville's masterpiece of American literature.

A Celebration of Field Music: Yankee Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps at the Oldest House

 

Join us for an afternoon of music from the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 as the Yankee Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps takes to the meadow in front of the Oldest House. Be there as they play tunes, reels, jigs, and music that once marshaled troops to order. Hear the fire of muskets punctuate the military music. Learn about the instruments and try making one of your own.

Hands-on History

Returns to the Whaling Museum

 

  

Every day in July and August, children and their families are invited to join the NHA staff in the Whaling Museum's Discovery Room from 1:30 to 4:30 P.M. Create historical crafts and engage in educational and enjoyable activities! Children learn about Nantucket history as they make souvenirs to take home. 

  

Summer crafts include:

Tuesday:           Lighthouses and signal flags 

Wednesday:     U'u clubs and Kahili

Thursday:          Scrimshaw
