Meet the NHA Staff:
Kathrina Marques | |
As any real estate broker can tell you, curb appeal is very important to a home's appearance. And nobody knows that better than Kathrina Marques, who has the responsibilty of making the NHA's gardens and grounds look their best throughout the year. "Working with gardens at historic sites introduces elements of appropriate site treatment," she said. "Issues of preservation, period authenticity, and interpretation all come into play alongside functional and aesthetic concerns."
Originally from Dublin, Ireland, Kathrina washed up on Nantucket's shores twenty-six years ago for a summer job, doing farm work and gardening. Ten years ago, she brought her extraordinary gardening talents to the NHA. In addition to keeping the flowers and plants outside the Whaling Museum and other NHA properties looking gorgeous, Kathrina is also an expert in historical gardens, and she offers tours of the NHA Oldest House garden in the summer months. In her rare free moments, she takes courses in landscape preservation and garden history at the Landscape Institute through Boston Architectural College.
She was recently promoted to the position of Landscape and Gardens Manager, so congratulations are in order! And while we're on the subject of congratulations, Kathrina is also a newlywed. She and her new husband John exchanged wedding vows in a private ceremony last month. Rumor has it that the flowers were to die for! |

What's Next for the NHA?
A Message From Bill Tramposch
|
Many are asking us at the NHA, "What are you planning for next year that will upstage the success of this summer?" Yikes! What a question. We are very pleased to have launched a gateway film by Ric Burns that has increased our visitation by more than 12 percent, and we are thrilled at the community reaction to the restoration of Greater Light, our gateway to an understanding of Nantucket's modern era as an art colony and resort destination. So, what is next?
Imagine this: When you walk into the Whaling Museum next summer, you will see a Candle Factory that is replete with objects, and you will understand through engaging graphics the workings of this complex historical industry. The average American museum places a mere 5% of its collections in front of the public; your NHA campus currently has fully 10% within public view. Yet, even 10% is not enough. We want our visitors to see as much as we can offer, and we strive to have visitors understand and appreciate Nantucket history through our rich collections. That, after all, is our mission: "To preserve and interpret Nantucket history". So, if you want a preview of what we have in mind for the Candle Factory, look to the Mercer Museum in Doylestown, PA. In addition, our "Island Home" gallery in the Whaling Museum, adjacent to the Candle Factory on the second floor, will become a window into our extensive online and archival collections, as well as a gateway to our sites and the stories they tell of the arc of Nantucket's history. These are but two of the many projects we have in mind for the winter, in addition to our wide variety of public programs, from weekly Food For Thought brown bag lunch lectures to our hoiday festivals, from off-season 1800 House courses to our participation in the island-wide One Book One Island celebration. We think you will like what is coming in 2012! Bill Tramposch, Executive Director

Special Concert: MC Lars Live!
Stanford-educated MC Lars will be bringing his high-energy perfomance to Nantucket High School's Mary P. Walker Auditorium for a community-wide concert on Saturday, November 19, at 7:00 PM. A 19th century literature specialist, MC Lars began recording songs in his dorm room and has since gone on to own his own record label and perform his unique blend of hip-hop around the globe.
Many of his songs incorporate his love of literature, with songs about Edgar Allen Poe's poetry and Melville's Moby Dick, such as the popular "Ahab Rap," which can be heard here.
He is passionate about literature and finding creative ways to introduce it to new audiences, and he is actively involved with nonprofit groups, seeking always to illustrate the positive power of music to inspire individuals. His performance at Nantucket High School is indicative of this, as all proceeds generated from the concert -- tickets are $1 per person -- will be donated to the Nantucket Education Trust. This will truly be a concert to remember, and a fantastic night of family entertainment!
