Ever wonder who keeps NHA Executive Director Bill Tramposch organized and on schedule? Meet Rebecca Miller, who handles this - and a variety of other jobs - with a constant smile and an outgoing personality.
Originally from Mt. Penn, Pennsylvania, Rebecca moved to Nantucket in 1996. She and her husband Dean were married on the beach at the Galley Restaurant in 2000, and they have two children, Dylan (8) and Tyler (3). She joined the administrative staff of the Nantucket Historical Association in January of 2010.
Rebecca is responsible for maintaining the Executive Director's schedule, and assists him in developing reports for the Board of Trustees. With Your Annual Fund Gift |
The Nantucket Historical Association strives to engage visitors in new and unexpected ways - to exceed expectations - through memorable and transformative experiences.
This year alone, we premiered our new gateway film Nantucket, directed by Emmy Award-winner Ric Burns; presented the new exhibit in the Peter Foulger Gallery, Nantucket's Cabinet of Curiosities: A to Z; opened the historic property Greater Light; and offered an inspiring array of concerts, tours, lectures, plays, classes, interpretive programs, and family activities.
The Annual Fund provides the vital unrestricted operating funds that enable us to exceed expectations as we carry out our mission of preserving Nantucket history. We are grateful for your strong commitment to the NHA and hopeful that you will support us with a gift to the 2011 Annual Fund.
There are several ways to give to the NHA Annual Fund:

Brigid Harmon
Named 2011 Verney Fellow |
Brigid Harmon
2011 NHA Verney Fellow
The Nantucket Historical Association is pleased to announce that New York native Brigid Harmon has been named the 2011 E. Geoffrey and Elizabeth Thayer Verney Fellow.
The Geoffrey and Elizabeth Thayer Verney Fellowship was established in 1999 with the aim of encouraging scholarship and research in the collections of the Nantucket Historical Association's Research Library. The endowed fellowship was made possible by a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Geoffrey Verney, longtime supporters of the NHA. Several past Verney fellows have used their time at the Research Library as a springboard to book-length projects, including Eric Jay Dolin's Leviathan.
Brigid comes to Nantucket after earning a master's degree in public history from New York University. Her research interests center on the hierarchy on whaleships as it affected foodways. Harmon became interested in the topic after reading Nathaniel Philbrick's In the Heart of the Sea, in which Philbrick posits the idea that African American sailors were typically the first to die on whaleships because they were given the least amount of quality nourishment on board the ship. Nearly four hundred whaling logs and journals reside in the NHA Research Library collection, which serve as the basis for Brigid's research.
At the culmination of her three weeks at the NHA, Brigid will be presenting her findings in a public lecture, and hopes to craft an academic article for publication based on her discoveries, as well as a piece for a future issue of Historic Nantucket, the NHA's quarterly magazine.

Nantucket Arts Festival: The Crucible

Join us as the NHA and Theatre Workshop Nantucket (TWN) celebrate theater arts and the spoken word with a dramatic reading of The Crucible, Arthur Miller's stirring play about the Salem witch trials.
Set in 1692 in the tumultuous environment of rural Salem Village - a community riddled by conspiracy, fear, and Puritan brimstone - Miller's play explores a crisis of conscience when an accusation of witchcraft unravels the fabric of a small town. Will John Proctor falsely admit guilt to alleviate his suffering on Earth or will he maintain his honor and safeguard his eter nal soul?
Directed by Lynne Bolton, this lively reading takes place in the NHA's atmospheric Quaker Meeting House. The production is presented as part of Nantucket Arts Festival 2011.

Why Read Moby-Dick?:
A Discussion with Nathaniel Philbrick
The NHA -- in collaboration with the Nantucket Atheneum, the Egan Maritime Institute, and the Nantucket Unitarian Church -- are proud to present an evening with New York Times bestselling author Nathaniel Philbrick as he discusses his latest work, Why Read Moby-Dick?
Having told the true-life tale of the Essex tragedy -- the story that inspired Melville's classic novel -- Philbrick has now set his sights on making Moby-Dick accessible to all readers. In recognition of the 160th anniversary of the novel's publication, Philbrick will offer his insights and answer questions from the audience.
Publishers Weekly calls Why Read Moby-Dick? "cogent and passionate," and promises that it "will remind fans why they loved the book in the first place, and whet the appetites of trepid potential readers." Mitchell's Book Corner will be on-hand with copies of the book available for purchase and signing by the author.
