Spend the day with Chilean artist Magaly Ponce
Family Drop-in Workshop, 2 - 4 P.M.:
"Insight-s into Whales" with Artist Magaly Ponce
This art-filled afternoon will explore how artists draw inspiration from observations
of nature. Find out how researching whales off the coast of Plymouth, Massachusetts, compelled Chilean artist Magaly Ponce to incorporate aspects of their behavior and biology into her artwork, as she traveled to far off whale migration locations such as Cape Verde and Lisbon, Portugal.
Contribute to a large-scale sculpture of a whale skeleton similar to Ponce's artwork or use recycled materials to make a whale sculpture of your own.
Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street
2-4 P.M.
Free with museum admission.
Recommended for children aged 5 and up.
Artist's Lecture, 7 P.M.:
Magaly Ponce presents "Insight-s into Whales"

Lecture with Simon Winchester,
best-selling author of Atlantic
Author of over twenty titles, Simon Winchester discusses his 2010 book Atlantic: Great Sea Battles, Heroic Discoveries, Titantic Storms, and a Vast Ocean of a Million Stories. Hailed as "a fascinating look at a long sweep of history" (Los Angeles Times); "at once satisfying, suspenseful, thought-provoking, always absorbing" (Daily Beast); and a "lively, lyrical telling of the ocean's story" (Wall Street Journal), Atlantic is a biography of the Atlantic Ocean, from its origins 370 million years ago through the population of its shores by humanity.
With his excellent research and engrossing anecdotes about the ocean as a "living thing," Winchester spotlights its inspiration for poets, painters and writers even as our waters are rapidly changing from pollution, overfishing and climate change.
