Message from the Executive Director

bill tramposch

What an exciting time here at the NHA! We are in the final stages of Greater Light's restoration and working with Ric Burns in the production of our "gateway" film about Nantucket.

With every visit to Greater Light, I can sense more and more the presence of the Monaghan sisters, and it is so enjoyable to watch people's reactions as they grow to appreciate the historical significance of this iconic corner of town.  For example, we have approached many Nantucket artists asking if they would contribute a Greater Light-inspired piece for the art auction planned around the opening, and all have enthusiastically said "yes."  More so, as they have become engaged in their creativity, some even appear to become obsessed with the spirit of the place. It is hard to explain, and one must see it to believe it. But there is a remarkable, almost palpable, presence of the past at this site.

Our "gateway" interpretive film has a similar power about it, but you no longer have to take my word-it is now on our Web site at www.nha.org/ricburns -a three-minute "teaser" that provides a good sense of the message that will ultimately become the twenty-five-minute final version of the film, simply called "Nantucket."

For most museums and historical associations this would be quite enough to fill a busy summer (and afterwards).  But wait, there is more:  In late May we'll host the exhibition Nantucket A to Z in our Peter Foulger Gallery-a walk-through of the alphabet (thank you, Tony Sarg) featuring Nantucket history through some of our greatest curiosities (no, the executive director will not be on display!).  In the Whitney Gallery at 7 Fair Street, we have launched the exhibition Eastman Johnson and His Contemporaries; a feature of this exhibition is the George Inness painting just acquired with the assistance of the Friends of the NHA and the Max and Heidi Berry Acquisition Fund.  No photo can do justice to this pastoral scene in 'Sconset. Please come by to see it and the other masterworks that grace the gallery.

I hope all of you will enjoy the summer we have planned, and we remind you that it would not be possible without your constant support and encouragement.

Fair winds.

William J. Tramposch

Executive Director
