Message from the Executive Director

Although the calendar reads winter - "Nantucket's other season, off-season, quiet season" - we are keeping the home fires burning brightly with an array of projects and plans for the upcoming summer season. Some of us at the NHA have just returned from a meeting in New York with documentary filmmaker Ric Burns. For a number of years we've been working closely with Ric as he produces a gateway film for us that is scheduled to premiere this summer. We've seen some rough cuts and are already delighted with his vision for this twenty-six-minute film about Nantucket!

In January, we resumed restoration work on Greater Light, our historic property at 8 Howard Street, to prepare for opening the house and garden this summer. We envision using it in many of the ways the original owners Hanna and Gertrude Monaghan enjoyed it, and see it as a community venue for lifelong learning in the arts and for small gatherings that celebrate Nantucket's arts and culture. We will open Greater Light this summer for special tours and events inspired by the Monaghans and the art colony era that began in the 1920s.

In the meantime, our Whaling Museum will reopen on February 12 and remain open weekends, plus Presidents Day, through April 23. Our Food for Thought lecture series resumes on February 3.

We look forward to seeing you at the Whaling Museum this winter.

Fair winds!
