A Message from the Executive Director
bill tramposchI am pleased to report that due to a vigilant effort to reduce our operating expenses and your continuing financial support, the NHA was able to weather the financial uncertainties of the past year. Although we began the year quite anxiously, we have ended it with a deeper appreciation of the broad base of support we enjoy. This pleases us, not only for financial reasons, but especially because your support assures us that we are on the right track when providing vibrant programming and services.

With this in mind, I am pleased to report that the restoration of Greater Light and the "gateway" orientation film on Nantucket history, which is being produced for the NHA by documentary filmmaker Ric Burns of Steeplechase Films, proceed apace. Both of these projects will be completed by summer 2011. I have had glimpses of them in progress, and I am certain that you will be pleased with our efforts to "interpret and preserve" Nantucket history. In addition, in May, the American Experience/WGBH will air Burns's two-hour film Into the Deep: America, Whaling, and the World, and we at the NHA are now developing plans to host its world premiere at the Whaling Museum in late April.

On the preservation side of things, the Greater Light project is proceeding brilliantly with local contractor Twig Perkins doing a thorough job of reinforcing the building's frame, laying new joists, installing the utilities, and at the same time making a few discoveries about the Monaghans, the former owners, along the way.  We will have Greater Light open as a "work in progress" for special tours this coming summer.

We are honored that our winter community programs are again being supported by a grant from the M. S. Worthington Foundation, and that a grant from the Nantucket Golf Club Foundation is enabling us to offer weekday activities for children and families in the Discovery Room.

Best wishes and many thanks for your patronage!
