| A Message from the Executive Director |
|
Throughout this tough economy, our institutional goal remains strong: to continue "preserving and interpreting" Nantucket history in vibrant and engaging ways. Toward this end, we will unveil our new film, a "gateway" orientation to Nantucket history, in the Whaling Museum in 2011. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we have secured funding for this project. Now in production, the film will be a twenty-minute transformative piece on the history of this "elbow of sand," produced and directed by famed documentary filmmaker Ric Burns.
With the continued help of our supporters, we are closing in quickly on the campaign goal for the restoration of our historic property Greater Light - the celebrated home of the Monaghan sisters, those Quaker ladies who were "stricken with the virus under the pseudonym of ART." When restoration is completed in 2011, Greater Light will enable us to interpret the fascinating era of Nantucket's art colony and the beginnings of modern tourism here. Of our twenty-two sites, there is not a better one to help us tell about this important chapter of reinvention. Click here to read more about this important initiative.
Thanks to the generous $50,000 challenge gift recently received from Janet Sherlund, president of the NHA's board of trustees, and her husband, Rick, we are now just $150,000 away from our $1.2-million goal for the Greater Light restoration. Please help us finish the summer in good stead by contributing to the campaign. To learn more, please contact Judith Wodynski at 508-228-1894, ext. 111, or call me at ext. 121.

| Summer Lecture Series |
Barbara White: "A Line in the Sand: The Battle to Integrate Nantucket Public Schools, 1825-1847"
Barbara White will discuss her book A Line in the Sand: The Battle to Integrate Nantucket Public Schools 1825-1847, a greatly expanded and revised edition of her original work on the subject, first published in 1978. Nantucket played an important role in the passage of early civil rights legislation, and she will address this struggle. White recently retired from the Nantucket school system where she taught history in the middle-school for thirty years. She was awarded the James Bradford Ames Fellowship in 2005, choosing for her subject the life of Anna Gardner, a Nantucket woman who taught at the African School here and subsequent to the Civil War went south to teach in what were at the time called "Freedmen's Schools."
Wednesday, August 5, Whaling Museum, 7-8 P.M. Free for NHA members; $15 general public; $8 children.
Dr. Charles Mayo: "Then and Now: Right Whales at the Brink"
Dr. Mayo, of the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, will discuss the impact of early whaling on right whales and the present condition of the population. Focusing on present-day causes of mortality and the status of the population that still comes to the waters of the Cape and Islands, Dr. Mayo will describe efforts to protect the species and the echoes of the past that still impact the future of right whales.
Wednesday, August 19, Whaling Museum, 7-8 P.M.

| Exhibition: Landmarks of Nantucket! |
What favorite Nantucket places would you miss if they suddenly vanished?
We asked seventh-grade students at the Cyrus Peirce Middle School this question and worked with twenty-five of them after school this spring to record their own special places. Each student received a camera to capture images of Nantucket landmarks, worked with NHA and CPS staff as well as professional island photographers, and created a student-curated exhibition now on display at the Whaling Museum.
Landmarks of Nantucket! is a collaboration involving the Nantucket Historical Association and the Nantucket Public Schools, specifically the Cyrus Peirce Middle School. Funding was provided by the Nantucket Golf Club Foundation.
Exhibition open through August 31.
