Collections Spotlight:
High Fan-back Windsor Armchair, 1799 One of the many pieces featured in the Harbor & Home: Furniture of Southeastern Massachusetts, 1710-1850 exhibition opening this month , this important Nantucket Windsor was made by islander Frederick Slade (circa 1777-1800), who was approximately twenty-two when he made this chair. He was the son of Benjamin Slade, another island chair maker. The height and airy design of this Nantucket Windsor chair distinguish it from the Philadelphia models on which it was based. | Exhibition: Landmarks of Nantucket! |
What favorite Nantucket places would you miss if they suddenly vanished?
We asked seventh-grade students at the Cyrus Peirce Middle School this question and worked with twenty-five of them after school this spring to record their own special places. Each student received a camera to capture images of Nantucket landmarks, worked with NHA and CPS staff as well as professional island photographers, and created a student-curated exhibition that will be on display at the Whaling Museum through August 31.
Landmarks of Nantucket! is a collaboration involving the Nantucket Historical Association and the Nantucket Public Schools, specifically the Cyrus Peirce Middle School. Funding was provided by the Nantucket Golf Club Foundation.
Exhibition open through August 31. |
