Collections Spotlight: Benjamin Worth Portrait
Benjamin Worth
A new accession, this gift of Susan Folger Ward (painted circa 1840s by an unknown artist, oil on canvas) shows one of Nantucket's true "sea kings." Benjamin Worth (1767-1848) spent forty-one years at sea, during which time he made thirty-four voyages. His time home (he resided at 26 Liberty Street) between cruises totaled only six years.

Worth's retirement notice in the Inquirer stated, "WHO HAS SAILED OVER 870,000 MILES? Capt. Benjamin Worth. He has passed Cape Horn 16 times; the Cape of Good Hope twice; circumnavigated the globe twice; visited nearly all the ports on the coasts of Chile and Peru; the N.W. coast of America, New Holland, New Zealand, Canton, and more than forty Islands in the Southern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans; obtained fifteen thousand barrels of spermaceti oil, and four thousand barrels of whale oil - never having had a man killed on board his vessel, nor a bone of one of his men broken by a whale."

Ralph Lauren introduces newest addition to the Compass Rose Collection to benefit the Nantucket Historical Association
Compass Rose Collection
Ralph Lauren has added an attractive new cream and navy canvas beach tote to its special collection of merchandise featuring the Compass Rose mural that adorns the east side of the Nantucket store. The Compass Rose Collection was created to preserve and honor this significant piece of Nantucket history. Signature tee-shirts, hats, and caps are also available at the Main Street store, and 100% of sales is donated to the Nantucket Historical Association. The tote is available on the Ralph Lauren Web site.

In 1936, photographer H. Marshall Gardiner created the Compass Rose mural on the side of what at the time was his photography and gift shop. The Main Street building's mural features distances between Nantucket and locations around the globe. The image is based on the design of the compass rose used by mariners and navigators.
Walking Tours of Downtown Are Back!
Monday - Saturday at 11:15 A.M. & 2:15 P.M.
Sunday 2:15 P.M. through June 30
Confined to the Old Historic District, the tour is led by an NHA interpreter who will discuss the timeline of Nantucket history-from the glacial formation of the island to the rise of whaling and its Golden Age (1830s), the Quaker religion, the women who owned and operated businesses on Centre Street (Petticoat Row), the island's involvement in the abolitionist movement, the Great Fire of 1846, and Maria Mitchell and her discovery of a comet in 1847. The tour also addresses the rise and fall of the whaling industry - especially the way in which the island's economy impacted the social and cultural development of Nantucket, the turn-of-the-century rise of tourism, and concludes with Nantucket's current status as a world-class tourist destination.

Each tour departs from the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street. Tickets are $10 for adults; $4 for children (ages 6-17) and may be purchased at the Whaling Museum admission desk; free for NHA members. For more information, please call 508-228-1894, ext. 0
Exhibition: Landmarks of Nantucket!
What favorite Nantucket places would you miss if they suddenly vanished?
landmark09studentsWe asked seventh-grade students at the Cyrus Peirce Middle School this question and worked with twenty-five of them after school this spring to record their own special places. Each student received a camera to capture images of Nantucket landmarks, worked with NHA and CPS staff as well as professional island photographers, and created a student-curated exhibition that will be on display at the Whaling Museum from May 31 to August 31.

Landmarks of Nantucket! is a collaboration involving the Nantucket Historical Association and the Nantucket Public Schools, specifically the Cyrus Peirce Middle School. Funding was provided by the Nantucket Golf Club Foundation.

Read more about the project in a Nantucket Independent article.

Exhibition Opening at the Whaling Museum, Sunday, May 31, 2-3 P.M. Exhibition runs through August 31.
Exhibition: Keeping Time in Sag Harbor
Photographs by Stephen Longmire
Exhibition closes June 7
sag harborThe photographs and texts in this exhibition are drawn from Stephen Longmire's book Keeping Time in Sag Harbor, which marked the 300th anniversary of the New York port in 2007.

For over three hundred years, the historic American village of Sag Harbor - the early whaling port at the tip of Long Island worthy of mention in Moby-Dick - has showcased buildings from the American Revolution to the present. The town includes a street lined with stately eighteenth- and nineteenth-century mansions that is known as "Captains Row," much like Nantucket's Upper Main Street. These similarities to Nantucket's whaling past, and that Sag Harbor as a resort community is now an alternative to the exclusive Hamptons, make this collection especially appropriate for exhibition here.

Digital Exhibition available
Images from the exhibition will continue to be available for viewing on the NHA Web site. View the digital exhibition of Keeping Time in Sag Harbor.

First phase of Greater Light Restoration has begun!
New Life for the Property
greater lightAfter years of planning, permitting, and reviewing architectural renderings, restoration work has begun on Greater Light. Purchased by Quaker sisters Gertrude and Hanna Monaghan in the 1920s, the house has been closed to the public for many years due to its poor condition. The NHA plans to restore and interpret the house in keeping with the theme of Nantucket as an art colony and resort. Discrete interior work will continue throughout the summer months; stabilization of the building and exterior work will begin in the fall. Read more about the project and find out how you can help.
