| Whaling Museum Winter Hours |
Come in out of the cold March wind and enjoy the Whaling Museum, currently open every Saturday & Sunday, from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. through April 19.
Make the most of the off-season with a warming and informative visit to our American Museum Association-accredited museum. Featuring exhibits about Nantucket history, decorative arts and scrimshaw, we also offer numerous interactive, hands-on learning opportunities for children 12 and under. The museum includes a restored 1847 candle factory, with its original whale-oil beam press (a three-story wooden structure that is the only such artifact surviving anywhere in the world); a 47-foot sperm-whale skeleton; a fully rigged whaleboat; a vast collection of whaling tools; the16-foot Fresnel lens from Sankaty lighthouse; and numerous portraits of whaling captains and their wives. The film, Bones of History, the Whale Hunt Lecture, the whaleship Essex Gam, and various gallery tours also provide endless possibilities for learning and enjoyable visits. |

| Special Announcement from NWF President Denis Toner regarding the 2009 Wine Festival Wine Auction Dinner |
"Happy days will be here again" during the Nantucket Wine Festival Wine Auction Dinner, scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2009. "This dinner auction is an important one, because all of the proceeds benefit the Nantucket Historical Association," said NWF president and founder Denis Toner. "This year's is by far the greatest presentation of food and wine in the history of the NWF. Guest chef Daniel Bruce, of Meritage in the Boston Harbor Hotel, is celebrating his twentieth year of presenting food and wine pairing dinners at the Boston Wine Festival, and has achieved national recognition for his skills.
"Bruce is an absolute master chef, and this year he will be paired with the king of Spanish wine, the estimable Jorgé Ordonez. Last year's NWF Luminary of the Year, Jorgé has an international reputation as the leading exponent of the revolution that has marked the progress of Spanish wine over the past twenty years. We guarantee that these wines are stars, and should deliver an evening of sensory pleasure. This auction will feature the best selection of wines ever showcased-including a rare and exceptional bottle of 1870 Chateau Lafite that is in impeccable condition; Robert Parker refers to this wine as the greatest pre-phylloxera Bordeaux he has ever tasted. All in all, this promises to be an evening that will rock the tent rafters at the White Elephant and do a lot of good for the NHA. Don't miss it; seating is limited."
You may still purchase tickets to the May 16 Wine Auction Dinner, which benefits the NHA, directly from us. If you plan to attend the Wine Auction Dinner and would like to reserve your space early, please contact Stacey Stuart at 508-228-1894, ext. 130
As an additional reminder, the NHA would like to take this opportunity to let our friends and longtime supporters know that this year's tickets to the May 14 Wine Festival Gala are being sold exclusively by the Nantucket Wine Festival. The sole portion of the Gala that benefits the NHA is the Silent Auction, so PLEASE COME AND BID! To purchase Gala tickets or other Nantucket Wine Festival tickets, please visit their Web site at: www.nantucketwinefestival.com |

| Make the Gift of a Lifetime in 2009 with a Tax-free Charitable IRA |
The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 allows you to make a tax-free transfer of your excess retirement assets to the Nantucket Historical Association-only during 2009. If you are age 70˝ or older, you can roll over up to $100,000 from a traditional or Roth IRA directly to the NHA. That amount would be excluded from your income and taxes and count toward your mandatory IRA withdrawals. In addition, your heirs would not be burdened later by the substantial taxes associated with inheriting an IRA. Making a gift to the NHA during your lifetime lets you see the results of your philanthropy.
Gifts may be directed to the permanent endowment, the Annual Fund, or a specific area of interest, such as Greater Light, the Whaling Museum, Research Library, 1800 House, or educational programs. For additional information, please consult your financial professional, or call Judith Wodynski, 508-228-1894, ext. 111, or email jwodynski@nha.org |

Nantucket Presidential Papers: From Washington to Franklin D. Roosevelt Whitney Gallery at the Research Library, 7 Fair Street |
|

American presidents have been concerned with the affairs of Nantucket Island from the days of the nation's founding. The collections of the Nantucket Historical Association hold documents signed by almost every president, beginning with George Washington. Mounted in 2008, in recognition of the election year, the exhibition highlights some of the more remarkable documents in the collection, including the appointment of Inspector of the Revenue for the Ports of Nantucket and Sherburne, signed by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson; ships' papers signed by John Tyler, James Polk, Franklin Pierce, and others; Abraham Lincoln's appointment of Nantucketer George Hussey Tracy as first lieutenant in the Fifteenth Infantry Regiment; a letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow; and a letter from Franklin Delano Roosevelt (as Acting Secretary of the Navy) regarding the naming of a torpedo-boat destroyer in honor of Nantucketer Reuben Chase. The exhibition is made possible by the generous support of Susan R. and L. Dennis Shapiro. Free and open during regular NHA Research Library hours. |
