It's time to turn your great ideas and successful projects into proposal concepts for our next conference.  I know it's not 'til next summer, but the Call for Presentations will be coming out in just a few weeks.  If you've never considered submitting a proposal, please let this be the moment you jump in!  We're eager for new ideas that connect to our conference theme: "Global visions/Local connections: Voices in Media Literacy Education."  You can find more details on our conference web page. Media Detective Study Results
Findings from a study published in last month's PEDIATRICS (The Official Journal of the American Academy of Pedatrics) suggests that Media Detective (a 10-lesson elementary school substance use prevention program) may serve as both a universal and a targeted prevention program that has potential for assisting elementary school children in making healthier, more informed decisions about the use of alcohol and tobacco products. Latest Pew Research
The recently released biennial report on media consumption from the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press tracks who watches news and why. The report suggests Americans are increasingly integrating new technologies into their news consumption habits instead of simply replacing traditional news platforms. [learn more]

Education Nation: An NBC News Summit On Sept 27-28th, policymakers, educators, members of the business community, and engaged citizens will come together in the rink space of at Rockefeller Plaza for a series of panel sessions on the challenges of America's education system, the success stories, and the solutions. Special news coverage and programming airing across all NBC News programs and platforms will extend beyond the two-day summit. [learn more]

NAMLE and ITVS Partner on Reel Injun Screenings
Media literacy will be on the agenda following nationwide screenings of Reel Injun, the first film in this season's Community Cinema series from ITVS. On Oct 11th, former NAMLE board member Karen Zill will be part of a post-screening panel discussing stereotypes of Native Americans and other minorities in Hollywood films. Community Cinema producing partners are seeking additional panelists and partners within NAMLE's membership in more than 80 cities around the country. Tower of Youth
The 14th Annual North American All Youth Film & Education Day event on Friday, Oct 1st hosts 1000 teen youth and their teachers and parents at an all school day. The live webcast features the finest, youth juried, movies made by high school youth from across the US and Canada and brings the large youth audience together to understand the power and beauty of youth media arts. New Media Gallery 2010
Plan to attend the annual convention of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) November 18-21, 2010 in Orlando, FL. This year's theme is Teachers and Students Together: Living Literate Lives. The New Media Gallery (hosted by NCTE's Commission on Media) will offer sessions all day on Friday. 7th International Conference on Technology, Knowledge and Society will be held Mar 25-27, 2011 at the University of Basque Country, Vizcaya, Spain.You may submit a proposal for an in-person presentation, or a virtual paper. Reel Injun NAMLE is proud to support ITVS's national Community Cinema screenings of the acclaimed documentary Reel Injun, an entertaining trip through the evolution of North American Native people ("The Indians") as portrayed in famous Hollywood movies, from the silent era to today. The film comes to over 75 cities across the U.S. in October 2010 and broadcasts on the PBS series Independent Lens in November. Fred Rogers Center Early Career Fellows Program
Early-career producers, animators, technologists, writers, artists, musicians, educators, and others, interested in creating exciting, high-quality media inspired by the legacy of Fred Rogers are invited to apply. Four Early Career Fellows, nationally selected, will be awarded a $15,000 stipend each. Support also will be provided for expenses related to the Fellows' work. Fellowships will begin December 2010 and end in November 2011. [learn more]


Tenure-track positions in Media and Cultural Studies
University of Wisconsin-Madison is hiring: 1) an assistant tenure-track position with a specialization in global media or gender/identity studies or industry production studies; and 2) an assistant or associate position in digital/new media. Tenure-track position in Digital and Social Media The Department of Communication and Culture at Indiana University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Digital and Social Media to begin Fall 2011. They seek a humanities-trained Ph.D. whose primary area of research expertise and training is in digital media studies focused specifically on the social dimensions and potentials of digital media. Bob McCannon is updating his review of the research into the effectiveness of media literacy which first appeared in the 2nd edition of the college text, Children Adolescents and Media (Sage, 2008).
