The NCTE Commission on Media is proud to announce that it will award the fifth annual Media Literacy Award at the NCTE Annual Convention in Orlando Nov 18-21, 2010.
 
Previous award winners are profiled here.

Deadline for nominations is Wed, June 30th.

The award winner will be notified by the end of August and will receive a plaque along with a cash award.

Healthy Media for Youth Act
Do you live in Wisconsin or West Virginia? The Healthy Media for Youth Act [HR 4925] is being proposed by Congresswomen in these states.  NAMLE is in support of this legislation which speaks of the need for media literacy education.  Feedback and support is most valued from people who live in the districts of the Congresswomen bringing the legislation to Congress. (Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., joined by Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito. Teaching About the Web Includes Troublesome Parts The New York Times (04/08/2010) recently showcased the curriculum of NAMLE organizational member Common Sense Media which cautions students to consider their online behavior before they get into trouble. [learn more]

to offer all NAMLE members a free online subscription for one year!  If you are a teacher, plan ahead for fall:  this online subscription includes up to 8 additional staff logins and up to 240 student logins-a value of £79.95MediaEdu is an educational website for Media Literacy in the UK that provides online resources and support for staff and students. The site includes a guide to key concepts, interactive quizzes, a large gallery of images, podcasts, a library of media literacy clips on YouTube, schemes of work, case studies, a guide to production skills, a glossary of technical language and topic areas on different media and how to analyze and use them.  Members can visit their NAMLE benefits page for instructions on how to sign up for free.

WCAE2nd World Conference on Arts Education hosted by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism, UNESCO will be held May 25-28, 2010 in Seoul, South Korea. 2,000 people from 193 countries will be participating. [learn more]

Journalism that Matters
will be held June 3-6th in Detroit. The theme is Create or Die: Forging communities that initiate, incubate, and innovate. The three-day work session of results-driven journalists, entrepreneurs, programmers, technologists, bloggers, videographers, funders, artists and educators will discover, assess, shape and create new enterprises and new approaches to participatory media and civic journalism. Powerful Voices for Kids Summer Institute is an intensive professional development experience developed by NAMLE-member Renee Hobbs and taught by a diverse faculty including leading scholars, experienced classroom teachers, media professionals, and educational technology specialists. It will be held July 5-9th in Philadelphia. [learn more]

Media Literacy Week 2010
 takes place Nov 1-5thin Canada. NAMLE-member Media Awareness Network in partnership with the Canadian Teachers' Federation has selected Gender and Mediaas the theme. Submit an innovative educator or youth to be featured. [learn more]


Media Literacy Conference 2010 co-hosted by the Media Education Association and the Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media in partnership with Ofcom will be held Nov 19-20th, 2010 in London, UK. The conference offers a forum and interdisciplinary networking space for teachers, academics and policy-makers to engage in developing media education in a variety of contexts.[learn more]

Media Literacy for Science Teachers
NAMLE Board member Kelly Mendoza presented with NAMLE member Daniella Quiñones, Marketing Coordinator for PBS Teacher's Domain, at the National Science Teachers Association conference on March 19th. The session featured media literacy in the science classroom using the learning through video production tool on Teachers' Domain-a library of free digital media resources produced by public television and designed for classroom use and professional development.
