Share your media literacy stories now!

I'm looking for examples of new ways in which media literacy education is being practiced in the US.  I'd like to highlight your great work at the World Summit on Media for Children this June. Several media literacy panels & presentations are planned and I want to be sure to bring attention to the great work of NAMLE members.
 
Send a brief email describing your curriculum, activity, advocacy, grassroots organizing, young media project or other exciting practice.  Please keep details under 500 words and be sure to provide a link to more online content. The submission deadline is April 30th.
 
All submissions will be included in a report on our website so that conference attendees can connect with you directly for more information.

· Would you like to perform community service while being part of a creative committed team to develop support for media arts in education?

On March 16th the FCC delivered to Congress a National Broadband Plan setting an ambitious agenda for connecting all corners of the nation while transforming the economy and society with the communications network of the future, which includes a robust and affordable Internet [summary] [full report]. FCC Chairman Genachowski announced a children's agenda for digital opportunity that specifically includes media literacy.[read statement].


pearsonReport: The Digital World of Young Children
The Pearson Foundation released "The Digital World of Young Children: Emergent Literacy," a research white paper on the effects of digital media on young children's learning at the 2010 Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) International Symposium, in Washington, DC. Among the conclusions: Developmental milestones are changing as a new generation of young children approach learning and literacy in ways not thought possible in the past. [learn more]

kffReport: Understanding the Participatory News Consumer According to a new survey conducted by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project for Excellence in Journalism, the internet is now the third most-popular news platform, behind local and national television news and ahead of national print newspapers, local print newspapers and radio. The internet and mobile technologies are at the center of the story of how people's relationship to news is changing. Drug Free Pennsylvania's 3rd Annual Media Literacy Conference will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Harrisburg, PA March 25-26th. NAMLE member, Renee Hobbs of Temple University will be a lead presenter. [learn more]

7th Annual Games for Change Festival in New York City hosted by Parsons the New School for Design will take place May 24-27th. Includes a series of individual talks by thought leaders on the future of digital media. World Summit on Media for Children & Youth NAMLE is proud to be a sponsor of the World Summit on Media for Children and Youth held in Karlstad Sweden June 14-18th. Media Literacy Summer Institute @ Ithaca College
will be held July 12-16th. Learn to use media analysis and production to support and enhance core curricula through the teaching of critical thinking skills, understanding bias in visual representation, evaluating credibility, using instructional media effectively, having students produce media, and more. This film examines the rise of "remix" culture in today's media environment, tracing the origins of music sampling in the early days of hip-hop to today's multibillion dollar industry. This issue is interested in exploring both the areas of disjuncture and areas of overlap, aiming to conceptualize new ideas that may fuel the development of both fields. TCETCCFP: TCETC 2010 · The Communication, Computing, and Technology in Education Program at Teachers College invites submissions for its 2010 Educational Technology Conference, "TCETC 2010: Technology, Media, and Designs for Learning" to be held May 15-16th at Columbia University. The conference is a multidisciplinary forum for graduate students to discuss and exchange information on the research, development and applications of emerging technologies in a variety of learning environments. Abstracts of 500-1000 words must be uploaded to the conference web site by March 31st. [learn more]
