NAMLE PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
MAY 2009

Media Lit Comes to Chicago Town Meeting

Recently I had the pleasure of moderating a panel discussion about media literacy, specifically news literacy, that included Carl Bernstein (from "Woodward & Bernstein" / Watergate fame).  His impassioned call-to-arms about the role of the press in a democracy inspired our live audience (and me) to look beyond the current demise of the newspaper industry as an end, but rather as a necessary restructuring, common to any longstanding industry.

The discussion was part of a town meeting held by the Independent Film Channel in support of their series, The Media Project*.  NAMLE is a partner in the project and is using the opportunity to share our own impassioned call-to-arms about media literacy. (Another town meeting will be held in D.C. next Thursday, May 28.)

I share this story as a way to encourage you to SHARE YOUR STORY.  So many of you are involved in exciting projects striving to broaden the scope and attention to media literacy.  Your story deserves to be on this page as well.  NAMLE wants to bring attention to YOUR story, YOUR project, YOUR classroom.

If you read my brief story above and thought "I've got a story too" then I implore you to take a few minutes, right now, and send me an email with a paragraph about it.  NAMLE wants to bring positive attention to the projects of its members-but we can't write about what we don't know.  So, share a story.

I hope to hear from you today,
Sherri

NAMLE Member Spotlight
Frank GallagherFrank Gallagher is Director of Education and Media Literacy for Cable in the Classroom (CIC), a NAMLE organizational member. Frank is a specialist in the areas of media and information literacy, internet safety, media education, and the impact of media on children. He is a consulting editor to CIC's publications, responsible for tracking the cable industry's work with schools, and serves on several boards including the National PTA and Partnership for 21st Century Skills.

Prior to joining CIC in 1995, Frank was a middle school educator. He holds a master's degree in Instructional Systems Design from the University of Maryland.  In reflecting on the future of media literacy, Frank states, "Within the 21st Century Skills movement and the evolving fields of internet safety and digital citizenship, there is great potential for media literacy.  As policymakers realize students will need to understand, critically evaluate and responsibly use both old and new media tools, media literacy is nicely positioned to fill a critical need.  That's where the bulk of my time is currently spent and where I see the greatest opportunities."
