Call For Proposals, Issue 2
 NAMLE's new Journal of Media Literacy Education has posted the call for its second edition . The deadline for submissions is April 15. The peer-reviewed journal will be published online three times a year. The call for papers and information about the journal are available on the NAMLE website, namle.net/publications/jmle.

Members on the Move & Making News NAMLE president Sherri Hope Culver and members Frank Baker and Renee Hobbs will participate in a panel discussion titled: Watch it, Make it, Analyze it: Building
Media Literacy Skills in Young People. The panel is part of the 4th
annual Thirteen/WNET, WLIW21 Celebration of Teaching and Learning.
The School of Teaching and Curriculum Leadership at Oklahoma State University in Tulsa (a NAMLE organizational member headed by Gretchen Schwarz) invited NAMLE treasurer Elizabeth Thoman to speak to faculty and grad students at the university's annual Research Week under the 2009 theme of "Innovations." Liz presented a dynamic interactive presentation weaving her personal reflections on the history of media literacy with the challenge of media literacy as education for the 21st century..

Media Smart Research Awards
Cable in the Classroom has announced its 2008 Media Smart Research Awards program, which aims to encourage the teaching and learning of media literacy in American schools and homes. By publicizing and supporting the research of emerging media literacy scholars, Cable in the Classroom aims to expand the knowledge base on the status and effectiveness of media literacy instruction. Up to three Media Smart Research Awards of $2,000 each will be given for research papers in media literacy written by graduate students attending accredited colleges and universities in the United States. Undergraduate students at such institutions may, with the recommendation of their faculty advisor, also submit papers for consideration. This year's deadline is May 31, 2009. NAMLE's own Kelly Mendoza was one of last year's winners. Let's do it again this year. Details online.

Call for Proposals
Join us for Pedagogy "Speed Dating!"(Call for participants at the National Association for Media Literacy Education 2009 conference) Do you have a terrific lesson plan or activity that you use again and again in your classroom? Could you explain it to a colleague in 10 minutes or less? We want to hear from you! Pedagogy Speed Dating will be sponsored by the Media Education Lab at Temple University. We want to feature the best lesson plans from educators all over the country, in an energetic panel session that will leave attendees filled with good ideas for their classrooms. For consideration, please submit the following: 1. Title of lesson plan 2. Age group(s) of students for which it is appropriate 3. At least one specific learning objective it is meant to accomplish 4. List of equipment or materials needed to implement it in a classroom 5. A description of the lesson plan or activity (no longer than 200 words) that would enable a teacher to "run with it" in a classroom. E-mail submissions as Word document attachments to Tina Peterson no later than midnight on March 31. We will notify all educators selected to participate in the session by April 30th. |

New MLE Resources
NAMLE organizational member Common Sense Media has launched a new parent media education program designed for elementary and middle schools. The free program provides everything schools need to partner with parents to teach kids how to be smart and responsible media users and creators. Topics range from cyberbullying, cell phones and Instant Messaging to media violence and commercialism. Schools can register for the program at commonsensemedia.org to get free access to the entire program, including videos, tip sheets, surveys, scripted presentations, and discussion guides. to 6th grade teachers who are using news and promoting media literacy in their classrooms. Entries are due by June 15, 2009, and will be judged
by community leaders. Winners will be recognized with the Fair Media
Council designating the winning school as a Fair Media Council Media

The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) is seeking nominations for the Outstanding Young educator Award. OYEA winners receive $10,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2010 ASCD Annual Conference. In addition, OYEA winners and honorees are invited to share best practices and participate in leadership-building activities throughout the year. Nominees must be 40 years of age or younger. Nominations close on August 1, 2009!
