Start a Wish List Today

A neat feature of NAMLE's online Marketplace is the ability to create a "wish list" to identify resources you want to order in the future.  It's especially helpful if you need to create a purchase order, verify grant funding or get purchase authorization before you can complete an order.  Come back up to six months later and your selections will still be there!

Starting a wish list is easy.  And once you've got it set up, it will always be there.  You can also print it out. Now's the time to start your wish list for classes and courses this fall.  Check out some of these:

Marvelous new series for Primary level
Elementary teachers will find the new "Fact Finders" Media Literacy series from Capstone Press a unique resource  for helping primary students learn to question all forms of media and popular culture.  (Grades 3-4 reading level)
coming distractions  at the controls
Eight titles are available  - on  movies, television, video games, online, music, print and new for fall:  the news and "my space."  Put the whole series in every primary classroom!

Try Searching by Standards
To find resources for your wish list, try another cool feature of the site -- selecting resources by words or phrases related to standards you have to teach. On the Marketplace Search & Shop page,  pull down the  menu of "standards key phrases."  Select one, click "submit" and see what appears to help you integrate media literacy into standards covering that topic.

It's Political Advertising time
Looking for political advertising spots - both historical and contemporary?  Make it easy on yourself with The Living Room Campaign, a video collection of dozens of political commercials from Eisenhower to Bush.  Included is the famous "Daisy" spot from the Johnson - Goldwater campaign in 1964.
the spot
Order it with The Spot: The Rise of Political Advertising on Television and you'll have everything you need for research -- or teaching - during the coming election season.

Tip:
Pull down the "choose by Standards Key  Phrases" menu and select "political advertising" voila! -  both resources will come up plus many others.

NAMLE founding member Frank Baker has published a new book, "Political Campaigns and Political Advertising: A Media Literacy Guide." Congratulations, Frank.  The book will be available at the end of the year.

NAMLE Board Member Paul Mihailidis was a member of the faculty at the 2nd Annual Salzburg Academy on Media & Global Change. The three-week global education initiative exploring media's role in global citizenship and civil society is conceived to answer two of the most pressing questions of our time: "How do news media affect our understanding of ourselves, our cultures, our politics?" and "How can we use media to better cover global problems and to better report on possible solutions?" 60 students and 15 faculty from 5 continents have gathered in Salzburg to live and learn together, creating a series of curricular products around global media literacy. Learn about the exciting work being done at the Academy at www.salzburg.umd.edu/ and start making plans to apply to participate next year. You can also contact Paul at pmihaildis@jmail.umd.edu with any questions.

New MLE Resources

September 2008's issue of Cable In The Classroom (available for download at www.ciconline.com contains a two-page spread that Social Studies teachers will be interested in: "Lights! Camera Debate: How to Watch The Presidential Debates from a Media Literacy Perspective." The article was co-authored by NAMLE members Frank Baker and Karen Zill. The online version also contains a downloadable "Debate Watcher Analysis Worksheet" for students.

Another reminder that media literacy education is a global movement: You can download articles in English that discuss the state of media literacy in Russia at edu.of.ru/mediaeducation

The United Nations campaign for understanding between faiths and cultures, known as the Alliance of Civilizations, has launched a website designed to foster dialogue and debate on media literacy.

The online tool, called the Media Literacy Education Clearinghouse, collects information from around the world on media literacy education, media education policy and youth-produced media, and is available in Arabic, English and Spanish. Access it online at aocmedialiteracy.org/

The project is being headed up by NAMLE member, Jordi Torrent.

NAMLE member Nick Pernisco has created a clever video about media literacy featuring his kittens Sushi and Sashimi. The video is aimed at kids (and grownups too), and is about the importance of teaching kids media literacy rather than prohibiting certain types of media outright.
You can view the video on TeacherTube.
