Everybody is talking about teaching "21st century literacies" but in July, the National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE) will hold a 3-day conference to explore precisely what the idea means and how to implement it in K-12 English and Language Arts classrooms.
The NCTE Institute for 21st Century Literacies (July 20 - 23, 2008 in Indianapolis) will address issues often discussed in the context of media literacy education:
- How to help students identify reliable sources of information and analysis?
- How to assess web 2.0 processes and texts?
- How to write curricula that utilizes new media forms and 21st century skills? .
If you're an English teacher looking for answers to these kinds of questions, or to share how YOU and your colleagues are developing new media classrooms, this Institute is for you!
Elizabeth Thoman, AMLA board member and a member of NCTE's Media Commission, will introduce AMLA's Core Principles of Media Literacy Education as one of the resources for the Institute. She will also host a gathering of AMLA members who attend. Registration includes a full year's license (worth $195) for the new 21st Century Literacy Pathway, an online resource to assist English teachers in implementing 21st century learning.
