 Board votes to approve name change!

The Board of Directors of the AMLA recently voted to officially change the name of the organization to the National Association for Media Literacy Education.

The Board appreciates the time that many members took to provide comments during the feedback period.  The feedback was extremely helpful to the Board in making a final decision. Special thanks to the members of the Name Change/Review Committee; Brian Primack, Renee Cherow O'Leary, Robert Kubey, Cyndy Scheibe, Lynda Bergsma and Sherri Hope Culver.

Next comes the implementation phase, including development of a new logo and slogan.  Official notice of the "change-over" date will be sent by next month. Stay tuned for updates and information.  Thank you for your interest in this important growth moment for media literacy education!

 Nominations Open for AMLA Board

As previously announced, the AMLA is looking for seven creative minds with a passion for media literacy education.  They should also be visionaries committed to working with others to develop the field of media literacy education in the USA in the next decade.

The opportunity for those who choose to accept it?  Service on the AMLA Board of Directors for a two year term, re-electable twice

This year, seven positions are open for election:
  • AMLA President
  • 1st Vice-President
  • Five (5) At-Large Directors

Nominations must be submitted by midnight, April 21st with elections to be completed by early June according to the timeline set by the 2008 Elections Team, headed by First Vice-President, Joe Behson.

Kelly Mendoza Wins Research Award

Kelly MendozaAMLA Graduate Caucus member Kelly Mendoza has been selected to receive Cable in the Classroom's Media Smart Research Award for her paper "Mapping Parental Mediation and Making Connections with Media Literacy." The paper reviews recent literature on the role parents play in their children's media literacy education.

Kelly is Ph.D student at Temple University's Mass Media and Communication program. Other notable achievements include work on online media literacy game projects and media workshops for tweens and parents.

The Media Smart Research Award is given annually to emerging media literacy scholars. Last year's winner was AMLA member Mary Carney for her paper "Using Media Literacy Education for Health Promotion." For More information on CIC's Media Smart Awards visit www.ciconline.org/researchawards.

 Members On the Move & Making News

AMLA members Elana Yonah Rosen,David Considine and Art Silverblatt have been named as finalist for Cable in the Classroom's Leaders in Learning Award® in the category of Media Literacy Education. They join a group of forty-four leaders chosen to represent innovation and excellence in education.

David and Art are former members of the AMLA Board of Directors. Elana is a current member of the AMLA board and director of Just Think Foundation. Twelve finalists will be honored at the Leaders in Learning Awards this June. Previous recipients include AMLA members  Frank Baker (2007) and Liz Thoman (2006).


AMLA member Tessa Jolls, a director of the nonprofit M21 and president and CEO of the Center for Media Literacy, presented U.S. Department of Education's (DOE) session "Media Literacy: The Changing Dynamic of Literacy in the 21st Century" as part of its Education Policy Briefing Series The session, co-presented by Doug Levin, senior director of education policy for Cable in the Classroom, emphasized current policy discussions and an overview of media literacy practice. The briefing was held at the DOE headquarters in Washington, D.C. on March 13.

AMLA Invited to Submit Ideas for World  Media Summit Program

amla logoAMLA member, Per Lundgren, has been named Director for the World Summit on Media for Children and Youth to take place in Karlstad, Sweden in 2010. He has invited AMLA President, Lynda Bergsma to serve on the Summit Advisory Reference Group and has invited the AMLA to provide suggestions for the conference program. From April 1 through May 25, all AMLA members have the opportunity to submit ideas as follows:

A contribution may range from suggesting one topic, to several topics, activities and names involving your own organization or network. Program ideas from AMLA members will be coordinated through Lynda Bergsma, who has the logon capacity to upload ideas to the Summit Website.  So please send all your ideas by email to lyndabergsma@gmail.com.

This is your chance to make sure many important topics in the field of media literacy education for children and youth are considered for inclusion in the Summit program.

 AMLA Hosts Mini-Conference in Detroit

Wayne State University's College of Education and The AMLA Michigan Caucus will be hosting a mini-conference titled: Media Literacy Education, What is it?  The conference will be held on the Wayne State University campus from May 30 - June 1, 2008.

A warm-up for the 2009 National Media Education Conference, which will also be held in Detroit, the mini-conference will feature sessions, keynote speakers and workshops. Visit the Michigan Caucus website for further information, updates and the call for proposals.

 Call For Articles

Academic Exchange Quarterly is calling for articles for its Fall 2008 issue focused on media literacy. Teacher-scholars from any level or discipline who have adopted or studied media literacy in classrooms are encouraged to submit articles by the end of May for consideration. You can view the call for submissions online.

The 2009 National Media Education Conference will be held in Detroit, Michigan, August 1 - 4, 2009. The Westin Book Cadillac Hotel has been selected as the host hotel. You can check out pictures of the hotel and read about its rich history here.


MEDIA: Overseas Conversations (V), An International Conference on Media, Education, & Youth, will be held on June 5 - 7, 2008 in New York City. This conference will provide an open forum for exploring media, education, and youth within an international context, and will include screenings of youth-produced media, as well as panels on media literacy education initiatives from the Arab and Gulf region, Asia, and Europe. All AMLA members in the Metro NY area are invited  to attend this 3 day event. Learn more at www.mocnyb.org.


The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and AMLA member Common Sense Media will hold a public forum entitled, "From MySpace to HipHop: New Media in the Lives of Everyday Youth," April 23 at Stanford University. This forum intends to unite parents, educators, researchers, and media industry leaders in discussion about how new media and new technologies affect various aspects of youths' lives. Scheduled panelists for the evening include Julia Stasch, Vice President of the MacArthur Foundation. The registration deadline for this free event is April 18. Details are available online.


AMLA organizational member Pauline Media Center is hosting the 9th annual National Film Retreat at its Los Angeles headquarters July 4 through July 6 as part of the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals. This year's film theme is Melting Pots: Food and Family. The retreat will show five films and foster communication afterward. For more information, visit www.nationalfilmretreat.org.


The 2008 National Conference for Media Reform will be held in Minneapolis on June 6-8, as thousands of activists, journalists and policymakers converge at the event sponsored by Free Press. Learn more about the conference and its exciting slate of speakers at freepress.net.

 Call for Media Literacy Award Nominations

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Commission on Media has announced that it will award the second annual Media Literacy Award at the Assembly of Media Arts Sharing Session at the upcoming NCTE Annual Convention in San Antonio.  

The award showcases NCTE members who have developed innovative approaches for integrating media analysis and composition into their instruction. It will be presented to an individual, team, or department that has implemented and refined exemplary media literacy practices in their school environment.  The Award Selection Process will be based on a portfolio review by a panel from the Commission on Media.  

Deadline for application is June 16, 2008. Read the call for nominations online.

Visual Literacy
The Journal of the American Association of School Librarians devoted the latest issue of Vision Quest to visual literacy. You can read articles from the journal at the AASL's website.


Safer Web Surfing
AMLA organizational member  Common Sense Media has teamed up with Google to produce a short video that gives parents easy-to-i mplement suggestions for making Web surfing safer.  The video,  "A Common Sense Approach to Internet Safety," is currently featured on the Common Sense Media website.


Student Films Online
The  American Film Institute (AFI) has launched AFI ScreenNation™, the  first online video posting and sharing community for middle and high-school students, aged 13-18. Visit the site at
