 AMLA Hosts Mini-Conference in Detroit

Wayne State University's College of Education and The AMLA Michigan Caucus will be hosting a mini-conference titled: Media Literacy Education, What is it?  The conference will be held on the Wayne State University campus from May 30 - June 1, 2008.

A warm-up for the 2009 National Media Education Conference, which will also be held in Detroit, the mini-conference will feature sessions, keynote speakers and workshops. Visit the Michigan Caucus website for further information, updates and the call for proposals.

 Help Wanted: AMLA Bookkeeper

AMLA has an opening for bookkeeping services (approximately 10-12 hours/month) working with AMLA Treasurer to manage the organization's finances including generating monthly reports and yearly budgets for the Board.   Access to QuickBooks Pro 5.0 or later required. Experience in organizing and filing annual nonprofit 990 tax return would be a plus. Currently Treasurer lives in Southern California but can work with qualified person anywhere by telephone and email.      

Please submit bid for monthly retainer of 10-12 hours/month plus hourly fee for occasional special projects. If you have a nonprofit rate, please indicate.  Provide 2 references for successful experience with small nonprofit and / or membership organizations.  If there are further questions, please send e-mail with phone number to AMLA Treasurer Elizabeth Thoman and we'll get in touch. Deadline for submissions is March 12, 2008.

 Calls for Paper & Video Submissions

AMLA member Action for Media Education is calling for submissions for their Images of Youth 2008 Video Festival.  Middle and High School students are invited to submit their videos (5 minutes or less) for inclusion in the program. Creators of the videos featured in the festival on April 25 at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center will receive special recognition certificates and have a chance to earn one of seven cash awards  Submissions are due by March 14. eSchool News and the Pearson Foundation are sponsoring an award for student videos on the topic of "how technology helps me learn."  Learn more at: eschoolnews.com.

The Shortie Awards: Student News and Film Festival announces a call for student film entries, The Shortie Awards focus on nurturing imagination and choice making in students and recognize original digital media productions created by student filmmakers, ages 7-18, and their teachers.  The deadline for entries is April 11, 2008.  Find out how to submit your shorts at shortieawards.org.


Academic Exchange Quarterly has issued a call for papers on popular culture. The journal seeks both theoretical and practical insights into the ways in which popular culture works in a variety of educational settings. Pieces may deal with what popular culture is and the ways in which it addresses topics of curricular interest, current attention to technological advances, and globalization. In addition, submissions might address the question of the "appropriate" use of popular culture in the classroom.  Read the call for papers here.

 Members On the Move & Making News

AMLA member Brian Primack, assistant professor of medicine and pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, is the lead author of a study that examines the incidence of substance abuse in music lyrics. The study was published in this month's issue of Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine. Read more about Brian's interesting findings here.

 Media Literacy Award Call for Nominations

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Commission on Media has announced that it will award the second annual Media Literacy Award at the Assembly of Media Arts Sharing Session at the upcoming NCTE Annual Convention in San Antonio. 

The award showcases NCTE members who have developed innovative approaches for integrating media analysis and composition into their instruction. It will be presented to an individual, team, or department that has implemented and refined exemplary media literacy practices in their school environment.  The Award Selection Process will be based on a portfolio review by a panel from the Commission on Media. 

Deadline for application is June 16, 2008. Read the call for nominations online.
 Opportunities

Position opening for a Conference Coordinator who will be in charge of overseeing all aspects of the upcoming "Media: Overseas Conversations (V)" (New York, June 5-7, 2008), an international conference on youth, media and education.

The position is part-time (5-6 days a month) from late February through early May 2008, and full time from May 7 to June 11. A hands-on approach to work and previous experience organizing events and conferences are a must. Candidates will need good coordination skills and excellent writing skills, in addition to good working knowledge of Photoshop and Dreamweaver software as well as general computer skills (excel, word, etc.). Basic knowledge of Spanish is a plus.

AMLA member Project Look Sharp is hosting its 10th annual Media Literacy Institute this summer. The 5-day intensive workshop includes both the theory of media literacy and hands-on practice with digital/computer technology (Mac-based). Project Look Sharp staff coach participants in developing and implementing individual media literacy integration plans intended to be used in their academic environments.

The institute takes place on the campus of Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York July 14-18, 2008. Learn more about the institute at  Project Look Sharp's website.

AMLA member Appalachian State University is offering media literacy staff development in its July 21-24 special institute Media, Diversity and Democracy. The session is especially relevant for teachers in Social Studies, History and Civics.

The 4-day event will feature sessions from AMLA members Chris Sperry and Frank Baker, recent recipient's of the Cable Leaders in Learning Award. Also presenting will be Carole Gerster, from the University of California Santa Cruz. Dr. Gerster is the author of "Teaching Ethnic Diversity Through Film." Other faculty include program coordinator David Considine and ASU graduate Nicki Soice, who has received accolades for her presentations at AMLA and National Council for the Social Studies.

The institute is offered FREE to North Carolina teachers and is just $75 for out of state teachers. Learn more about the event here.

The 2009 National Media Education Conference will be held in Detroit, Michigan, August 1 - 4, 2009.  The Westin Book Cadillac Hotel has been selected as the host hotel. You can check out pictures of the hotel and read about its rich history here.


The 2008 National Conference for Media Reform will be held in Minneapolis on June 6-8, as thousands of activists, journalists and policymakers converge at the event sponsored by Free Press. Learn more about the conference and its exciting slate of speakers at freepress.net.

New MLE Resources

Growing Up Online Teaching Guide
PBS is offering a teacher's guide and lesson plans for their acclaimed documentary Growing Up Online.  AMLA members Renee Hobbs and Kelly Mendoza wrote the guide, and board member Faith Rogow served on the advisory committee. The program itself is streamed and available to watch online for free. Check it out at pbs.org


Media Literacy at Public TV Stations
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has released a new report on how the nation's public TV stations are satisfying their education mandates. The report is titled: "Public Television Stations-A Trusted Source For Educating  America."   

Of particular interest to media educators are these research findings:
· 46% of stations report that their teacher professional development programs/activities focus on media literacy
· 72% of stations said media literacy- when asked what other content areas they address
