Nominations requested for Media   Literate Media Awards

The AMLA is requesting nominations for the 2007 Media Literate Media Awards that will be presented at the National Media Education Conference in June.

The Media Literate Media Awards recognize outstanding contributions made by mainstream media professionals with national reach. The awards are designed to interest mainstream media in doing, covering or including media literacy in their work.

At the 2003 NMEC conference, entitled "Literacy and Liberty," the awards focused on outstanding contributions in the field of media literacy by people doing mainstream public affairs and news.  The honorees were Bill Moyers and NOW, Howard Kurtz for his Washington Post columns and CNN show, and Janine Jackson for her work on the "Counterspin" radio show and with FAIR.

At our 2005 conference, entitled "Giving Voice to a Diverse Nation," the awards went to mainstream national media related to the theme of the conference (print, web, radio, TV or film).  The honorees were the "Daily Show" with Jon Stewart, NPR's "On the Media" with Brooke Gladstone and Bob Garfield, and Van Jones, Esq., Executive Director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights.

Nominations for this year's conference, entitled "iPods, Blogs, and Beyond: Evolving Media Literacy for the 21st Century," should be for mainstream national media related to the theme of the conference.  Nominees may be individuals, organizations or productions that meet at least one of the following four criteria.
  • regularly incorporate critical analysis of media in their work
  • regularly provide thoughtful analysis of media issues
  • consistently cover and explain media policy
  • provide visibility or advocacy for media literacy education efforts
Nominations must include the complete name of the nominee and a 100 to 200 word statement of the reason for your nomination.

Please send your nominations for this year's awards to AMLA president Lynda Bergsma and put "Media Literate media Awards" in the subject line.  Nominations must be received by April 19, 2007.

The AMLA board of directors will consider all nominations and select this year's awardee(s). We hope that members whose nominations are selected will be able to take part in the awards program at the conference.
