Welcome to the March Update.  The AMLA is abuzz with planning for the National Media Education Conference and Research Summit, coming to St. Louis June 23 - 28.  Read on for information about the conference and for other valuable updates on happenings in the world of media literacy.

 Be a "Modern Media Maker"
The popular Modern Media Makers (M3) Youth Production camp will return again to NMEC this June.  If you are an AMLA member and know of any high school aged children who would like to participate in the Youth Production Camp  at this year's NMEC, and you are willing to sponsor (nominate) their participation, please contact Dr. Davida Taylor at drdtaylor@aol.com.

New this year in parallel to the youth camp is a 4-day camp for teachers interested in learning how to use audio/visual production techniques in their classrooms.  Experience in video production is not necessary.  If you are an AMLA member who is interested in participating in the M3 Teacher Production Camp, please contact Claire Beach at beachc@edmonds.wednet.edu.

alice cahn headshopAMLA National Advisory Council member Alice Cahn was recently featured in a podcast interview on MediaSnackers.  Cahn, the vice president of development and programming for Cartoon Network, discusses the future of children's programming and weighs in on the debate over advertising to children. Tune in to the podcast here.

Charles M. Firestone, Executive Director of The Aspen Institute Communications and Society Program, has agreed to become a member of the AMLA National Advisory Council.  Welcome Charles.

AMLA board member Elana Yonah Rosen represented Just Think at the "Beyond Primetime" Kids and Media Conference in February.  She joined leading executives from a number of America's top media companies at the conference in New York.

AMLA board member Elizabeth Thoman attended the 21st Century Literacies Impact conference in Berkeley in February. The conference focused on how teaching and learning 21st century skills are embedded in and supported by teacher education, assessment, and professional development. Ideas generated at the conference will jump-start collaborative efforts among invited educators and member organizations of the Partnership for 21st Century Skills to accelerate the pace of reform.

AMLA congratulates member, Sr. Rose Pacatte, on the publication of Media Mindfulness: Educating Teens about Faith and Media.  In the book, published by St. Mary's Press, Sister Rose and coauthor Gretchen Hailer address the issue of values and the media and offer resources for helping teens understand and reflect on the role media and technology play in their lives.

Congratulations to the family of AMLA board member Jill Fellow on the birth of new baby Kristie Quinn Fellow on March 10.

 Member Opportunities

The Graduate Program in Media Literacy at Appalachian State University (an AMLA organizational member) has released its schedule of classes for Summer 1997 through Spring 2008.  Courses offered include  Media: Image and Influence, which runs July 15th-20th, and Literacy & Curriculum Development, which is offered in Fall 2007. Project Look Sharp
is offering its 9th annual summer institute July 9-13, 2007. The 5-day intensive media literacy workshop includes both the theory of media literacy and hands-on practice with digital/computer technology. Project Look Sharp staff, including AMLA founding board member Cyndy Scheibe and Cable in the Classroom Leader in Learning Award Winner Chris Sperry, will coach participants in developing and implementing individual media literacy integration plans for academic environments. This course may be taken for 3.1 continuing education units, or 2-3 graduate credit units. The institute will take place on the campus of Ithaca College in New York, and inexpensive on-campus housing is available. Limit of 18 participants. TEMPLE UNIVERSITY POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
The Temple University Media Education Lab is seeking a research fellow for the 2007-2008 academic year to collaborate on research related to copyright and fair use issues related to media literacy educators.
    The research fellow would work collaboratively with faculty at the Media Education Lab and the Center for Social Media at American University on the preparation of research reports based on extensive interview data with media literacy educators. The research fellow will also contribute to the development of publications for scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. This opportunity would be ideal for an individual with interests in law and policy, K-12 education, media studies and media literacy.  PhD in media studies, education or sociology preferred. Salary: $40,000 plus benefits

Legacy International's Global Youth Village is seeking teachers for their Mass Media & You Workshop, which emphasizes the political, social, and economic implications of an increasingly globalized mass media and stresses the importance of using media effectively and wisely. Applicants should have previous professional teaching experience. Experience in curriculum design, experiential training methods, and working with multicultural groups is preferred.  Applications can be downloaded online.

The National School Boards Association, in association with Apple Inc., announces the fourth annual Moviefest competition. Students across the country are invited and challenged to answer the question: "How Can One Person Make a Difference?" Create a 60 second Public Service Announcement to share your insights, ideas and inspiration for making positive change happen. This year's contest closes on Monday April 23, 2007. Winners will be announced Wednesday, May 16th, 2007. Visit the Moviefest Website for further information.

Online registration is now available for the biennial National Media Education Conference & first-ever Media Literacy Education
Research Summit,hosted by the AMLA.

The Early Bird price of $295 for AMLA members and $375 for non-members is good until May 1.
