Like plants?
ACR scientists are hosting several habitat restoration and native plant workshops this winter and spring. The first is Saturday, Jan 22. Help with invasive plant removal and outplanting native plants in the bottomlands of Martin Griffin Preserve's Pike County Gulch.  View the online calendar for more info

Calling birders
Each year during the fall and winter months, ACR scientists census shorebirds and waterbirds on Tomales Bay with the help of dedicated volunteers. Join us as we collect data on these bird populations from boats and from the shores of this beautiful West Marin bay.

Volunteers should have excellent birding skills and be able to identify birds in flight and from a distance.

Will wetland restoration increase the number of overwintering birds?
Watch this video and learn from Dr. John Kelly, ACR Director of Conservation Science and Habitat Protection, about how bird populations have responded to the recent restoration of the Giacomini Wetlands at the southern tip of Tomales Bay. (courtesy of West Marin tv)

Mountain lion tracks

From ACR Biologist/Co-Director of Education Jeanne Wirka: "My first day back in the new year rewarded me with the one thing I have been waiting for my entire biological career... I saw a mountain lion at (Bouverie Preserve's) Cougar Pond at about 3 pm. She was drinking from the pond. When she saw me, she turned and with a single leap disappeared into the chaparral. She was too quick for me to snap her picture, but she left some nice tracks in the mud near the pond.

It is a humbling and joyous experience to stand in the presence of one of these magnificent animals. An auspicious beginning for 2011."

Did you know...
Puma, cougar and mountain lion all refer to the same animal - Puma concolor .
Family Exploring
If you're at all anxious or concerned about cougar-human interactions - or have children who are - learn more about how to co-exist with these beautiful animals. Visit the Felidae Fund's website at www.felidaefund.org. Click the "Education" link.
As with most wild animals, cougars avoid human contact except in very very rare and unusual circumstances.
