Velvet Elvis
All Church Study Begins September 13!
In the book Velvet Elvis, by Rob Bell, the author tells of finding a painting of Elvis Presley on velvet in his basement. The artist signed the painting only with an initial. Bell wonders if the artist decided his/hers was the definitive, final painting of Elvis, which would mean that no other artist ever has to paint that subject again. Bell compares the painting to the church encouraging readers to continue to paint their faith. He states "Times change. God doesn't, but times do. We learn and grow, and the world around us shifts, and the Christian faith is only alive when it is listening, morphing, innovating, letting go of whatever has gotten in the way of Jesus and embracing whatever will help us be more and more the people God wants us to be." From September 13-October 4 we will consider the picture we paint as we gather to discuss Velvet Elvis. Groups will be formed for Sunday morning and other times as interests dictate. Do You Whistle While You Work?
Whether you do - or don't - join us on Tuesday, August 18 for a "clean-up" day at our church. We have some tasks like polishing the brass in the sanctuary, cleaning and organizing the nursery, cleaning the kitchen, and getting to a few odd corners in need of attention. We'll start at 9:30 and go until we're finished...or ready to stop. If you can't be here at 9:30, come when you can. (Please call the church after 2:00 to make sure help is still needed). We'll have a great time in fellowship working side-by-side and enjoy a pizza lunch provided for you. The coffee pot will be on, the ice tea jug nearby - with cookies to make the day a little sweeter. Blessing of the Animals Returns August 22
Mark your calendar, bring your friends, and invite pet-walkers you meet! The Inviting Ministries Committee will host our Blessing of the Animals service on Saturday, August 22 at 10:00 am in Fellowship Hall. The next few Sunday's we'll have cards at the church exits for you to take home and distribute. The IM Committee will also take invitations to University City vet offices. Leashed, caged, and stuffed animals are all invited!

Inside the Church Progressive Dinner
Saturday, August 28, 6:30pm
This is a progressive dinner with a new twist. Rather than drive from home to home, wasting precious fuel, we will gather at UUMC and move from room to room for our different courses! This will give us a chance to experience different spaces in our building, share great food and get to know each other better.
All ages are welcome and there will be spaces for children to play as needed. This would be a great activity to invite a friend. You may choose to bring an appetizer, salad, main course, sides or dessert to serve eight. We will begin at 6:30 with appetizers. Contact Rev. Festival of Sharing
For this year's Festival of Sharing, we will be collecting "Readin' & Writin' Packs" and "Health Kits". Please have the kits at the church by September 13 and place them in the labeled boxes in the Fellowship Hall.
The Readin' & Writin' Packs consist of:
6 new pencils with erasers, 2" eraser, 2 ink pens, 1 box of 24 crayons, 1 pair of child scissors, 1 pencil holder, 12" ruler, 6 folders with pockets, 2 spiral bound notebooks (wide-rule, 70 pages)
Directions: Please place smaller items inside the pencil holder, then place all items in a 2 gallon ziplock bag.
The Health Kit consists of:
1 hand towel, 1 washcloth, 1 sturdy comb, 1 metal nail file or nail clipper with file, 6 band aids, 1 bar of soap (bath size, in wrapper), 1 toothbrush (in original packaging.)
Directions: Seal all items in a one-gallon plastic ziplock bag. (Toothpaste will be added by Church World Service.) Please include $2 for shipping expenses in a separate envelope.

Centenary Cares Ministry of Meals
August Schedule
Monday, August 31 our church is scheduled to help serve meals to the homeless at Centenary Cares (Olive and 14th street). We meet at Centenary at 4:30pm and most Monday's are done between 6:00 and 6:30pm. You may find yourself working in the kitchen on actual food preparation, or on the serving line taking tickets, rolling silver-ware or being a part of the food service line.
Children, youth and adults are welcome to join us in this ministry. If you would like to participate, you can sign up in the church bulletin or call the church office (314-863-8055). If you need a ride, please let the church office know and we can connect you.

Green Gourd Tree
When
Jonah didn't understand God's plan or God's grace, God made a green
gourd tree grow, under which Jonah sat and learned. Join adults at
UUMC for a year of learning, under the green gourd tree.
Simplicity Circles:
Contact Lynnea Brumbaugh for information regarding the schedule for this group. She can be reached via email at lynneabrumbaugh@gmail.com. The group is using Simple Living Network resources to create simplicity circles. These groups or circles will consider the wisdom, need and ability to simplify many areas of our lives.

Christianity's Family Tree: Using Adam Hamilton's book, we will consider eight Christian denominations and faith traditions and unique perspective each has to offer on the Christian faith.

Music Announcements
This Sunday the Church Orchestra will play an arrangement of the hymn Holy, Holy, Holy. The orchestra will be directed by Bette Welch. The postlude is a movement from one of Mendelssohn's well-known Organ Sonatas. He wrote six of these in the pattern of J. S Bach, whom he respected very much. The Allegro con Brio movement will be played Sunday.

2009 United Methodist Churches
Habitat for Humanity House
St. Louis United Methodist churches are partnering this year to sponsor a Habitat for Humanity house. UUMC along with Salem-in-Ladue UMC have been asked for volunteers to work on four Saturdays this summer and into the fall. The dates and tasks for these days are:
Saturday 8/22/09 Paint Interior Walls, Paint Mill work
Saturday 9/19/09 Baseboard/Windowsills
Saturday 10/10/09 Finish Painting, Hardware, Mirrors
We would like to have 5 people form our church for each day. In addition to these days there is also an open day on house completion day, Saturday 10/17/09 when all volunteers will be welcome.
Older youth (14 and older) can volunteer with supervision and some restriction on the work they are allowed to perform. All work dates begin at 7:45am and finish at 4-4:30pm. All participants are expected to work the entire day. If you are interested in volunteering for any of these days please sign up or contact Rev. Brenda at brendastobbe@hotmail.com.

Spark Announcements
1. Parents, please email Tiffany if you can be a pick-up or drop off driver for this Sunday's Spark trip to Six Flags.
2. Kindling Group is having a Lock-In on THIS THURSDAY, August 13th. We will meet at the Church Thursday, at 7:00 pm. We will have some fellowship time, do some yoga and some meditation. We will wake up and head to "City Seeds." It is an organization run out of Catholic Charity's St. Patrick's Center. It is the Urban Farm that the Youth Group visited last year. We will farm all morning together and end with a lunch. You may pick up your kids, at the church, at 12:30 pm. Please send Tiffany an email if you plan on attending.
3. THIS SUNDAY, August 16th, Spark will be going to Six Flags. We are asking that all youth bring a sack lunch/dinner, with all throw away items (no re-useable cooler bags or dishes). If your child brings them, they will have to carry them around for half of the time at the park. We will leave after church and be back at 8:00 pm.
4. Information for the fourth annual Youth Labor Day Retreat is available! Pick up a packet by the youth bulletin board. All youth must be signed up, with money turned in by August 23rd.
5. The Fall Schedule is now available. Pick up a copy by the youth bulletin board.
