Camp EDGE
Can We Borrow Your Christmas Tree?  Or, a Tent?
The theme of this year's Vacation Bible School is Camp E.D.G.E. and our church will be turned into the coolest camp site in the area!

To do this, we need a lot of artificial Christmas trees, and some camping tents! If we can borrow yours, please bring it to the church on or before July 26 (and please put your name on it!)

Camp E.D.G.E. Program
Stop by the church on Friday, July 31 at 6:30pm to enjoy the full program which wraps up the week of Vacation Bible School.  You'll enjoy the voices of 120 children as they sing the songs they have learned that week.  Mark Brown always plans a few surprises for the program - be here to see what he comes up with this year!
(If you have a video camera we can borrow during the program, please contact Rev. Stobbe.)

Food Pantry Needs
We are experiencing an increase in requests for food this summer and our food pantry shelves are beginning to get bare.  Please consider helping us to stock the following items:

Spaghetti Sauce with Meat        Spaghetti Noodles
Canned Tuna or Chicken
Tuna Helper
Canned meals such as Ravioli, Beef Stew, etc.

Cereal                    Boxed Milk            Saltine Crackers
Peanut Butter         Hearty Soups         Canned Fruit
Cookies

WE DO NOT NEED CANNED VEGETABLES AT THIS TIME

Everyday Holy
A Fall Retreat for Women
Women, mark your calendars now for time apart in fellowship and reflection as we gather for a fall retreat at the Sojourner's Retreat Center, October 30 & 31.  Often we zoom past the touches of God because we are so focused on our tasks of the day.  Our time together will help us to slow down and consider how we focus on noticing our "innerscape"; balancing our busy with our holy and noticing how God is in us and with us everyday.

Sojourner's Retreat Center is about an hour south of St. Louis.  Our time together begins at 7:00 on Friday evening and will end no later than 5:00 on Saturday. Cost will be about $75 per person ($40 student rate).  Scholarships are always available.

More information and registration will be available this fall but we want to be sure you know this wonderful opportunity is coming so you can hold this date on your calendar.

All-Church Progressive Dinner!
Save the date of Friday, August 28 for a new twist on a progressive dinner!  The UUMC Inviting Committee is hosting an "inside the church" progressive dinner for all members, friends, and guests of UUMC.  Additional information will be out soon.

Lunch Bunch
It's lunch time!  Thursday, July 23 is the next Lunch Bunch gathering. We meet at the Sheraton Westport Inn.
The lunch buffet is delicious and the conversation delightful!  We gather at 11:45a.m. for food and fun.  Add it to your calendar.  It's open to anyone who wants to join us for lunch - the more the merrier!
Music Announcements
This Sunday, Jenny Bower, will return as our guest organist. Many of you told me how much you enjoyed her playing. Tom King will play a special solo with Jenny. Hail the Day that Sees Him Rise will be the featured hymn as arranged for clarinet and organ by Robert Powell.

By the way, we are looking for a Suzuki violin for an up-coming solo. If you have such a thing in your possession and we can borrow it until August 2, we would really appreciate it!!

Under the
Green Gourd Tree

When Jonah didn't understand God's plan or God's grace, God made a green gourd tree grow, under which Jonah sat and learned.  Join adults at UUMC for a year of learning, under the green gourd tree.

Simplicity Circles:

Contact Lynnea Brumbaugh for information regarding the schedule for this group.  She can be reached via email at lynneabrumbaugh@gmail.com. The group is using Simple Living Network resources to create simplicity circles. These groups or circles will consider the wisdom, need and ability to simplify many areas of our lives.

Crosstalk -- Thinking Together Class:
An Altar in the World by Barbara Brown Taylor, discussion led by Tom Mitchell: How to live spiritually in the world in everyday life.
July 25, 2009 -- Practices 5-12
Crosstalk's blog has now been moved to the University UMC web site.  The former blog will still contain information past programs.

Christianity's Family Tree:  Using Adam Hamilton's book, we will consider eight Christian denominations and faith traditions and unique perspective each has to offer on the Christian faith.
Books are in - they are available in the church office.  We will be mailing them to you, unless we hear from you to make other arrangements.

Centenary CARES
(now called "The Bridge")
On the 2nd and 5th Mondays of each month, from 4:30-6:30 pm, help prepare and serve dinner to hungry people. Time to visit with clients and time to clean up offer opportunities for those who arrive at different times. Contact the church office if you can help, 314.863.8055 or Rev. Brenda Stobbe, brendastobbe@hotmail.com.

2009 United Methodist Churches
Habitat for Humanity House
St. Louis United Methodist churches are partnering this year to sponsor a Habitat for Humanity house. UUMC along with Salem-in-Ladue UMC have been asked for volunteers to work on four Saturdays this summer and into the fall. The dates and tasks for these days are:

Saturday 8/1/09          Nova Brick, Siding, Fascia

Saturday 8/22/09        Paint Interior Walls, Paint Mill work
     Saturday 9/19/09        Baseboard/Windowsills
Saturday 10/10/09      Finish Painting, Hardware, Mirrors

We would like to have 5 people form our church for each day. In addition to these days there is also an open day on house completion day, Saturday 10/17/09 when all volunteers will be welcome.

Older youth (14 and older) can volunteer with supervision and some restriction on the work they are allowed to perform.  All work dates begin at 7:45am and finish at 4-4:30pm. All participants are expected to work the entire day.  If you are interested in volunteering for any of these days please sign up or contact Rev. Brenda at brendastobbe@hotmail.com.
