2009 United Methodist Churches
Habitat for Humanity House
St. Louis United Methodist churches are partnering this year to sponsor a Habitat for Humanity house. UUMC along with Salem-in-Ladue UMC have been asked for volunteers to work on four Saturdays this summer and into the fall. The dates and tasks for these days are:

Saturday 8/1/09          Nova Brick, Siding, Fascia

Saturday 8/22/09        Paint Interior Walls, Paint Mill work
     Saturday 9/19/09        Baseboard/Windowsills
Saturday 10/10/09      Finish Painting, Hardware, Mirrors

We would like to have 5 people form our church for each day. In addition to these days thee will also be four open days when all volunteers will be welcome. Three of these days will be the opening Blitz: Friday 7/10/09, Saturday 7/11/09, and Sunday 7/12/09.  The house completion day Saturday 10/17/09 will also be an open day.

Older youth (14 and older) can volunteer with supervision and some restriction on the work they are allowed to perform.  All work dates begin at 7:45am and finish at 4-4:30pm. All participants are expected to work the entire day.  If you are interested in volunteering for any of these days please sign up or contact Rev. Brenda at brendastobbe@hotmail.com.

Centenary CARES
On the 2nd and 5th Mondays of each month, from 4:30-6:30 pm, help prepare and serve dinner to hungry people. Time to visit with clients and time to clean up offer opportunities for those who arrive at different times. Contact the church office if you can help, 314.863.8055 or Rev. Brenda Stobbe, brendastobbe@hotmail.com.

Sign Up at the UUMC Website
University United Methodist Church has a website!  The site is still in its infancy, but within the next year you will see it grow into a robust site where members and visitors can get information about UUMC and connect with UUMC - and with each other!

www.universityumc.com

In order for you to access the site as a "member", rather than as a "guest", you'll need to sign up on the site!

Please follow these steps to sign up:
1.    From your computer, head on over to "www.universityumc.com"
2.    At the top of the column on the right hand side of the screen, there is a link that says "Sign Up" - click on it!
3.    The Login form is the first to pop up.  Provide your email address, your first and last name, and a password. Click the "Save" button.
4.    A request for your home phone number will appear - please provide that information.  Click "Save".
5.    A request for your address will appear - please provide that information.  Click the "Save" button.
6.    You will then receive an email asking you to click on a link to verify your email address.
7.    Once you verify your email address, the rest is up to the church office.

Each time you visit the UUMC website, click on the "Log In" link and enter the email address and password you set up.

Please Note:
·    It may take a couple of days for your account to be set up - each request goes to the church office and the office finalizes your account.  If you sign up on a Friday afternoon, you probably won't be able to actually log in as a "member" until Monday.

·    The 5 forms in the Sign Up area (Login, Contact, Address, Personal, Volunteer) can be updated any time your information changes, or when you simply want to add more information.  You are not required to provide all of the information asked for on those forms.

·    Information you provide in the Sign Up forms will be available for viewing by other website members (but not by guests) unless you make other arrangements with office staff.   The information you provide will self-populate the "Directory" on the website.

·    You do not have to be an actual member of University United Methodist Church to be a "member" of the website.  You simply have to be someone we know!

·    Using the site as a "member" rather than as a "guest" grants you access to the prayer request form, to reply to topic discussions, etc.

A great BIG thank-you to the many church members who, along with church staff, are at work improving the content, appearance, and usability of the site!!!

Cake Recipes!
Keep those recipes coming in!  The Cake-Off was delicious, and we're looking for everyone's cake recipes.  As they come in, they are being posted on our website:  www.universityumc.com

(In order to access the photos and recipes, you must LOG IN to the website.  Please contact the church office if you need assistance.)

The annual UUMC Float Trip will take place July 10-12, 2009.  This wonderful event is coordinated by Alice and John Mohr - and it is a lot of fun for individuals and families.  Bring your own tent and food for Saturday's lunch - other meals are prepared and eaten as a group.  It's time to pay so bring your check book - John will not be in church on June 28, so please mail your checks to his home address. Only 10 canoes left. Half canoes are available; specify top or bottom half. Questions? Call John Mohr at 314.567.3398 or johnmohr0128@sbcglobal.net

When Jonah didn't understand God's plan or God's grace, God made a green gourd tree grow, under which Jonah sat and learned.  Join adults at UUMC for a year of learning, under the green gourd tree.

Simplicity Circles:

Contact Lynnea Brumbaugh for information regarding the schedule for this group. The group is using Simple Living Network resources to create simplicity circles. These groups or circles will consider the wisdom, need and ability to simplify many areas of our lives.

When the Game is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box:
Bonnie Muren leads the final sessions of this class, which meets in the church library on Sunday mornings at 9:15am.

Crosstalk:  Crosstalk will join the Desert Mothers/Early Christian Women class for the next few weeks.
Crosstalk's blog has now been moved to the University UMC web site.  The former blog will still contain information past programs.

"The Desert Mothers/Early Christian Women":  This class, led by Rob Rexroat, meets at 9:15am in the Parlor.  If you did not pick up a copy of the materials for the next class, please contact the church office.  We would be happy to fax you a copy, or have it available for pick up at the church.

Third Week: Women Martyrs.  If Aeneas and Virgil and Hector and Achilles are the heroes of the ancient world then the martyrs are the embodiment of a different sort of heroic glory for the early Christians.

Fourth Week: The Desert Mothers.  Themes in female desert monasticism drawing on the sayings of the desert mothers (ammas), the desert communities that were formed, and their legacy.

Message from Dave Claborn
To the UUMC Congregation,
Thank you for your warmth, love and acceptance during my time here in St. Louis.  You've been open, gracious and loving of a stranger - as Jesus modeled, proving the folks at UUMC are indeed true disciples.  I am moving back to Ohio to live in the house I still own, to be near to my kids and family - and to work for Ohio State.  I hope to be back on occasion and visit again.  Thank you for your love and acceptance.
