Fathers' Day is this Sunday
Join us in worship this Sunday, June 21, as together we thank and honor the men in our church and the important role they have in our lives.

Volunteers Needed for
UUMC's Gay Pride Festival Booth
For the third-consecutive year, UUMC will have a booth at the Saint Louis Gay Pride Festival on June 27-28 in Tower Grove Park.  We need volunteers to staff the booth for two-hour shifts between 3-7pm on Saturday and 11am-7pm on Sunday.

It's a fun time of meeting people (and pets), handing out invitations to upcoming UUMC events, and talking a little about who we are and what we do.  If you can help, please call or e-mail Dan Barrett (314-726-2509 or danwbarrett@yahoo.com).

UUMC Float Trip
Only 14 and a half canoes left!

The annual UUMC Float Trip will take place July 10-12, 2009.  This wonderful event is coordinated by Alice and John Mohr - and it is a lot of fun for individuals and families.  Bring your own tent and food for Saturday's lunch - other meals are prepared and eaten as a group.  It's time to pay so bring your check book. Only 17 canoes left. Half canoes are available; specify top or bottom half. Questions? Call John Mohr at 314.567.3398 or johnmohr0128@sbcglobal.net

Invitation to All Scouts
This Sunday (June 21st) in worship we will recognize and honor Thomas Finkenkeller who received his Eagle Scout Award.  All Boy Scouts,Girl Scouts, and men who have received their Eagle Scout Award are invited to wear their sashes and uniforms and come stand with Thomas during this recognition.

Fellowship Time
On the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall, there is a sign-up sheet for bringing snacks for Fellowship Time after worship.  Because of the potluck and cookout,  the next two times to bring snacks are June 21st and 28th.  Fellowship Time is a great welcoming opportunity with visitors.   We want to always have snacks and often a beverage as simple as ice-water.  Please sign-up for a time in June-August.

Into autumn when it's not too hot and not raining, we will continue to have Fellowship Time outside.  The Inviting Ministries Team will coordinate the set-up of the table, chairs, and trash container.  Those of you signing-up to bring snacks do not have to worry about any of that.

gourd tree
Under the
Green Gourd Tree

When Jonah didn't understand God's plan or God's grace, God made a green gourd tree grow, under which Jonah sat and learned.  Join adults at UUMC for a year of learning, under the green gourd tree.

Simplicity Circles:

Contact Lynnea Brumbaugh for information regarding the schedule for this group. The group is using Simple Living Network resources to create simplicity circles. These groups or circles will consider the wisdom, need and ability to simplify many areas of our lives.

Crosstalk:  Crosstalk will join the Desert Mothers/Early Christian Women class for the next few weeks.
Crosstalk's blog has now been moved to the University UMC web site.  The former blog will still contain information past programs.

"The Desert Mothers/Early Christian Women":  This class, led by Rob Rexroat, meets at 9:15am in the Parlor.  If you did not pick up a copy of the materials for the next class, please contact the church office.  We would be happy to fax you a copy, or have it available for pick up at the church.

Second Week: Women and Marriage in Early Christianity.  Marriage takes on a rather ambivalent role in the early Christian period.

Third Week: Women Martyrs.  If Aeneas and Virgil and Hector and Achilles are the heroes of the ancient world then the martyrs are the embodiment of a different sort of heroic glory for the early Christians.

Fourth Week: The Desert Mothers.  Themes in female desert monasticism drawing on the sayings of the desert mothers (ammas), the desert communities that were formed, and their legacy.

Music Announcements
The Church Orchestra will play this Sunday, directed by Bette Welch. Our guest organist is Jenny Bower, who will be a sophomore organ major at Oberlin Conservatory in the fall. Tom Mitchell and Kathy Leahy will be especially proud. Mark Brown will sing the well-known Laudate Dominum by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This solo is a Latin setting of Psalm 117.

Sewing Class
Jill Powell is going to teach sewing again! For those who are learning how to sew, the projects for the summer are capri pants, shorts and aprons. Jill has the patterns for different aprons so don't buy one. In the Fall we will pick different seasonal projects.

Everyone should have a portable sewing machine and we will meet the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month for 2 hours after church. Jill will post dates as soon as we can get a class together.

If you already know how to sew you are welcome to join us for company to help you get motivated to finish any long-standing projects.

Email your interest to: artyjill@sbcglobal.net
