Holy Smoke and Cake-Off
Sunday, June 14, kick off Summer with a delicious and fun event - our "Holy Smoke!" barbeque and cake baking competition.

After worship, stay for burgers or hot dogs, with all the fixings!!  Then, sample a variety of cakes to determine the BEST cakes at UUMC!

Remember to bring your cake entry for one (or more!) of the following categories:

 Best Decorated Cake
Best Tasting Cake (chocolate - if any
               part is chocolate)
 Best Tasting Cake (everything except
               chocolate)
 Best Cupcake
 Best Cake age 11-17
 Best Cake age under 11

A free-will offering will be collected.  All proceeds from this event will go to support clean water through the World Service Fund of The United Methodist Church.

Volunteers Needed for
UUMC's Gay Pride Festival Booth
For the third-consecutive year, UUMC will have a booth at the Saint Louis Gay Pride Festival on June 27-28 in Tower Grove Park.  We need 17 more volunteers to staff the booth for two-hour shifts between 3-7pm on Saturday and 11am-7pm on Sunday.

It's a fun time of meeting people (and pets), handing out invitations to upcoming UUMC events, and talking a little about who we are and what we do.  If you can help, please call or e-mail Dan Barrett (314-726-2509 or danwbarrett@yahoo.com).

Needed: Summer Sunday School Teachers!!
Please don't assume someone else will step up - or assume that we know you'll help.  Sign up for the weeks you will help.
Sunday School through the summer will be pretty low key. Rev. Brenda will tell the story. Following the story, the children move to centers set up in rooms 8a-b on the lower level. Fusible beads, beads to string, play dough and lots of toys and books are just a few of the offerings each week. We encourage all the kids to use this time to get to know each other, relax a bit and enjoy being in church. Please contact Rev. Brenda or the church office to sign up.

Under the
Green Gourd Tree

When Jonah didn't understand God's plan or God's grace, God made a green gourd tree grow, under which Jonah sat and learned.  Join adults at UUMC for a year of learning, under the green gourd tree.

Simplicity Circles:

Contact Lynnea Brumbaugh for information regarding the schedule for this group. The group is using Simple Living Network resources to create simplicity circles. These groups or circles will consider the wisdom, need and ability to simplify many areas of our lives.

Crosstalk:  Crosstalk will join the Desert Mothers/Early Christian Women class for the next few weeks.
Crosstalk's blog has now been moved to the University UMC web site.  The former blog will still contain information past programs.

"The Desert Mothers/Early Christian Women":  This class, led by Rob Rexroat, will meet at 9:15am in the Parlor, beginning June 14.  If you did not pick up a copy of the materials for the first class, please contact the church office.  We would be happy to fax you a copy, or have it available for pick up at the church.

First Week: Asceticism and Virginity--strange as this may seem, virginity was culturally subversive and revolutionary by the Graeco-Roman standards of the time.

Second Week: Women and Marriage in Early Christianity.  Marriage takes on a rather ambivalent role in the early Christian period.

Third Week: Women Martyrs.  If Aeneas and Virgil and Hector and Achilles are the heroes of the ancient world then the martyrs are the embodiment of a different sort of heroic glory for the early Christians.

Fourth Week: The Desert Mothers.  Themes in female desert monasticism drawing on the sayings of the desert mothers (ammas), the desert communities that were formed, and their legacy.

UUMC Float Trip
float trip 2008
The annual UUMC Float Trip will take place July 10-12, 2009.  This wonderful event is coordinated by Alice and John Mohr - and it is a lot of fun for individuals and families.  Bring your own tent and food for Saturday's lunch - other meals are prepared and eaten as a group.  It's time to pay so bring your check book. Only 17 canoes left. Half canoes are available; specify top or bottom half. Questions? Call John Mohr at 314.567.3398 or johnmohr0128@sbcglobal.net

Coordinator Needed for Blessing of the Animals
Would you like UUMC to have a Blessing of the Animals service this year?  If so, please call or e-mail Dan Barrett (314-726-2509 or danwbarrett@yahoo.com).  Last August, we had our first service and hope to have the next service on September 12 in Heman Park preceding the University City Puppy Pool Party (1:00-4:00 pm).
Fellowship Time
On the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall, there is a sign-up sheet for bringing snacks for Fellowship Time after worship.  Because of the potluck and cookout,  the next two times to bring snacks are June 21st and 28th.  Fellowship Time is a great welcoming opportunity with visitors.   We want to always have snacks and often a beverage as simple as ice-water.  Please sign-up for a time in June-August.

Into autumn when it's not too hot and not raining, we will continue to have Fellowship Time outside.  The Inviting Ministries Team will coordinate the set-up of the table, chairs, and trash container.  Those of you signing-up to bring snacks do not have to worry about any of that.

Great Job!
Ben Sulser received an "Honorable Mention" for his Visual Arts piece "Windows into the Past and Future" in the Holocaust Museum's Annual Art and Writing contest.  There were over 500 submissions and Ben was the only Freshman selected out of 14  finalists at the High School level.  His piece and those of the other finalists will be shown at the St. Louis Galleria between July 1 and July 31.

Wear Your UUMC Name Tag
Please wear your UUMC name-tag every Sunday and at other service and out-reach opportunities away from church.  If you do not have a name-tag, please e-mail Becky (officeadmin@university-umc.com) and she'll be glad to make a new one for you.  It creates a friendlier atmosphere when we do not assume that everyone knows everyone.
Sewing Class
Jill Powell is going to teach sewing again! For those who are learning how to sew, the projects for the summer are capri pants, shorts and aprons. Jill has the patterns for different aprons so don't buy one. In the Fall we will pick different seasonal projects.

Everyone should have a portable sewing machine and we will meet the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month for 2 hours after church. Jill will post dates as soon as we can get a class together.

If you already know how to sew you are welcome to join us for company to help you get motivated to finish any long-standing projects.

Email your interest to: artyjill@sbcglobal.net

We thank pianist Joyce King and clarinetist Tom King for leading us in music during this week's service.  Their exciting music is always a treat!
