Holy Smoke and Cake-Off
Sunday, June 14, kick off Summer with a delicious and fun event - our "Holy Smoke!" barbeque and cake baking competition.

After worship, stay for burgers or hot dogs, with all the fixings!!  Then, sample a variety of cakes to determine the BEST cakes at UUMC!

All proceeds from this event will go to support clean water through the World Service Fund of The United Methodist Church.

Needed: Cake Bakers, Grills and Grillers!!
On June 14 UUMC will have its first ever Holy Smoke and Cake-Off. To make this barbeque and cake baking competition most excellent we will need to have a few grills with people willing to grill hotdogs, burgers and some veggie burgers.

Do you have a grill you can get to church? Would you be willing to barbeque on the 14th?

We REALLY need some folks to grill and we are absolutely willing to use bribery to get them!!  Those who are willing to grill - will be the JUDGES of the Cake-Off!  Woo-Hoo!  You'll be "required" to taste every entry and select the award winners.  Sign up right away!

How about baking a cake? You may enter cakes in the following categories:

 Best Decorated Cake
Best Tasting Cake (chocolate - if any
               part is chocolate)
 Best Tasting Cake (everything except
               chocolate)
 Best Cupcake
 Best Cake age 11-17
 Best Cake age under 11

If you can help, e-mail Rev. Brenda at brendastobbe@hotmail.com or give her a call at church, 314.863.8055. Or, you can sign up in the bulletin!

Memorial Service for John Shadle
A memorial service for John Shadle will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery at 11:00am on Tuesday, June 2, 2009.  Those needing transportation to the memorial should be at University United Methodist Church by 10:00am and we will carpool to the service.  Those driving to the memorial should park behind the administration building.  We will be taken to the memorial site promptly at 10:45am.
A picnic lunch will be provided following the service at the park adjoining the cemetery.  Detailed maps will be available at church next week.
If you have questions, please contact Brad Hershey at 567-6958 or Bonnie Dee at 477-7432.

Summer Sunday School
Teachers Needed
Sunday School through the summer will be pretty low key. Rev. Brenda will most likely be back in story telling mode. Teachers who have taught all year are invited to take a break for the summer. Other adults are invited to step forward for one or two or three weeks through the summer to help cover the bases. Following the story, the children move to centers set up in rooms 8a-b on the lower level. Fusible beads, beads to string, play dough and lots of toys and books are just a few of the offerings each week. We encourage all the kids to use this time to get to know each other, relax a bit and enjoy being in church. Please look for sign-ups this week to choose the weeks you can help.  Summer Sunday school starts June 14!
Fearless Faith
Faith on the High Wire of Life

On Sunday, June 7, UUMC will enjoy a service lead by a very special guest!

"In the rarified world of aerialists, Tino Wallenda is royalty," stated a documentary on the Discovery Channel.  A seventh generation Flying Wallenda, Tino has "walked over dens of lions and tigers, between buildings, across rivers, and over a pool that contained more than 50 sharks."  With all the fame and acclaim, however, those who know him best know that it is God who is at the center of his life.  In morning worship on Sunday, June 7 Mr. Wallenda will share with us a simple, yet powerful message of Fearless Faith delivered from the high wire.

Circus Ticket Deadline!!
UUMC is going to Circus Flora!
Join us on Sunday, June 7 for the 1:00 performance of Circus Flora for a wonderful afternoon at the circus.  Tickets are $18.00 each.  $4.50 from each ticket will go to support The United Methodist Black College Fund.  United Methodists support 10 Black colleges and a medical school.  This year UUMC through its apportionment giving will make a contribution of $900.
WE NEED YOUR TICKET ORDERS NO LATER THAN SUNDAY, May 31.
Contact the church office to get on the list.

Green Gourd Tree

When Jonah didn't understand God's plan or God's grace, God made a green gourd tree grow, under which Jonah sat and learned.  Join adults at UUMC for a year of learning, under the green gourd tree.

Simplicity Circles are Coming in June:

Beginning Sunday June 7, UUMC will begin a group named "Simplicity". The group will use Simple Living Network resources to create simplicity circles. These groups or circles will consider the wisdom, need and ability to simplify many areas of our lives. Lynnea Brumbaugh will lead the first group. Join Lynnea on June 7 in room 27 to help craft our first-ever Simplicity Circle. This curriculum is provided by the same organization that produces "Whose Birthday Is It Anyway?"

Crosstalk:  Crosstalk meets at 9:15 in Room 19a.  Feel free to drop in when you can.

May 31: Reinventing Work in Retirement -- Led by Tom Mitchell

Crosstalk's blog has now been moved to the University UMC web site.  The former blog will still contain information past programs.

Please Send Us Graduation Information!
We would love to highlight all of the graduates in our congregation in an upcoming issue of the Visitor.  Please send to the church office information about persons graduating from high-school, college, or graduate work.  Let us know where graduating from (degree), future plans, and a picture.  (We would like to have all of this information by May 31!)
Music Announcements
This Sunday Cam Tesson will sing Come raggio di sol by Antonio Caldara. Cam received a "1" in the State Solo and Ensemble contest in April for this solo. The Chancel Choir will sing a work based on the famed hymn Now Thank We all our God. Johann Pachelbel, the same man that wrote the well-known Canon, took this hymn and added quite an embellished part for the choir. Adrian Sulser, Paul Russell and Cam Tesson will play a piece arranged for two violins and cello. Pentecost will have quite a few special numbers.
Got Rummage?!
Details are still "under development" at this point, but Susie Luke and Stacy Braeske are hard at work preparing for a Fall Rummage Sale!  So - - pick a corner of your basement, garage, or attic and start setting aside items you'll donate for the Rummage Sale.  Stay tuned for more information!

"Greeting from Central of Beira UMC Women's Society

Dear Brother Tom,

How are you? We are doing fine in the  Mozambique North Annual Conference especially at Central UMC in Beira.

Last weekend we had a women's conference at the district level and our parish was represented by 162 women with uniforms, so it was so wonderful. We would like to express our gratitude by your prayers.  We have presented a good report as women at Central UMC in Beira.  Please transmit to our sisters and brother at University UMC.

Chair person of the women's society is Elisa Julio Zunguze, Vice is Ermenegilda Alexandre. We are praying everyday thinking about you all as sisters in Christ.

Yours in Christ
