Players and Fans
The movement has headed West! Our San Diego
event was a huge success, garnering one of
the largest Amateur division draws we've seen
in years. I'd like to thank everyone involved
for their hard work, including our title
sponsor, Evolution Home
Theatre, Gretchen
Magers and her team at The
San Diego Beach Tennis Association, and
of course, all our Pro
and Amateur division players.
The San Diego Smash also saw the return of
the Maloney Sisters--Lisa and Laura, to Pro
competition, as they kept their undefeated
streak alive, taking home another trophy. In
the Men's Pro division, Donny Young and Marty
Salokas nailed a hat-trick, winning their
third event of the 2009 National Tour and
putting some serious distance between
themselves and Team Rhino in the point
series standings.
If you are planning to be anywhere near Long
Beach, CA on July 4th weekend, then you have
got to get out to The
Long Beach Open. This event is guaranteed
to be one of the biggest of the tour and is
our first West Coast event co-produced with
West
Coast Beach Tennis. These guys have done a
great job growing the sport in SoCal!
We continue to use social media to help
spread the word about beach tennis. You can
now follow live updates from all of our events
on Twitter,
and keep up to speed with everything that's
happening in the movement on Facebook.
And don't forget to upload your favorite
beach tennis photos to our Flickr
Photostream.
Please share this newsletter with all of your
beach tennis friends by scrolling to the
bottom and using the "Forward" link. Here's to
an amazing 2009 season! Come join
the movement!

Salokas and Young Pull Hat Trick in San Diego
Maloney Sisters Make 2009 Debut in Grand Style
The clouds parted on Sunday in San Diego,
providing a picture-perfect back drop for the
Evolution Home Theatre San Diego Smash, where
Donny "The Golden Bullet" Young and Marty
Salokas (Hermosa Beach, CA) picked up their
third tour win, defeating Joe "The Bronze
Bomber" Testa and his new partner, Billy
Lambo (Hermosa Beach, CA), 8-4, in the Men's
Pro division. Salokas and Young remain the
point series leaders in this years tour and
were outspoken in their desire to take on the
reigning national champs Matteo Marighella
and Alex Mingozzi at the 2009 National Beach
Tennis Championship, on Labor Day Weekend, in
Long Beach, NY.

Henderson and Whitesell Take Virginia Beach Title
After three straight days of rain, the clouds
finally parted in Virginia Beach, making way
for some amazing beach tennis competition.
Local talent came out in droves, but in the
end it was pro beach tennis journeymen Phil
Whitesell and Chris Henderson (Charleston,
SC) who prevailed, defeating Johann Vavarud
and Niclas Kohler (Virginia Beach, VA), 8-2,
to win the Men's Pro division. Vavarud and
Kohler were consistently sharp throughout the
weekend and battled their way through the
semifinals, defeating Martin Black and Ryan
Davidson (Virginia Beach, VA), 8-6.
