The BMS GT Mentorship Program, now in its second year, has students in need of adult mentors to work with them. These students have specific areas of interest (listed below), as they will develop a research plan, carry out research, hopefully have some field experiences with their mentors, and produce a final product for presentation at our Mentorship Showcase on May 24th. Mentors who are in the fields listed below and who would be willing to spend some time once every week or two with a student who also has an interest in the field should contact Tammy Zwahr at (281) 634-6886 or email her at
tammy.zwahr@fortbend.k12.tx.us. Our kickoff meeting between mentors and mentees is February 11th, at 4:15 pm in the BMS Library. People interested in being a mentor would also need to submit a background check form by Friday, January 22nd. The website for submitting background check information is http://www.fortbend.k12.tx.us/comrel/pie/chc.cfm. To learn more about the BMS GT Mentorship program, please visit http://www.fortbend.k12.tx.us/campuses/bms/ActivityDetail.cfm?activityIndex=13173.

NEWS FROM FBISD

Fort Bend ISD Seeks Community Comment on Proposed School Calendars for  2010-2011 and 2011-2012
Fort Bend ISD is currently seeking feedback on proposed calendars under consideration for both the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school years. It is important to know that in 2007, the Texas Legislature mandated that school districts may not begin school before the fourth Monday in August.  The start date on both draft calendars is the fourth Monday in August, which is August 23, 2010 for the 2010-2011 school year and August 22, 2011 for the 2011-2012 school year.

The district invites you to view the draft calendars here  (from Dec. 7, 2009, to Jan. 7, 2010) and provide comments. There are two calendar options for both school years.

The District will consider all calendar feedback before making a final recommendation to the Board of Trustees.  FBISD plans to include the final recommendation for the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school calendars on the Feb. 9, 2010, Board Agenda.

FBISD invites community members to submit names for the district's 45th elementary campus and 11th high school opening in August 2010
The district is seeking community suggestions for naming its 45th elementary school campus and 11th high school that will open next August.  The new elementary campus is located at 636 Glendale Lakes Drive in Rosharon, and the new high school is located at 500 Waters Lake Blvd., in the Hillwood Development, near Sienna Plantation.  Read more here......

Karin Grisdale named Principal of FBISD High School #11
The Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees named Karin Grisdale as the new principal of High School #11 at its December 14 Board meeting. Grisdale is an experienced educational leader and has been serving as Associate Principal for Travis High School. Before joining Fort Bend ISD in 2003, she was an associate and an assistant principal and a social studies teacher at Stratford High School. Prior to working in Spring Branch ISD, she was a social studies teacher at Davis High School in Houston ISD.

"It is a privilege to serve as the new principal of High School #11 in FBISD.  I am looking forward to working with the students, parents, and community members to build a school of excellence with strong traditions in all academic and extracurricular programs," said Grisdale.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science from Eastern Illinois University, and her Master of Arts in Secondary Education from Central Michigan University.
