SCHOOL NEWS and POINTS OF INTEREST

Each week Longhorn Links will feature a BMS Staff Member.

Meet Mr. Jake Nichols, 7th Grade Assistant Principal:
This is my ninth year in education.  I have held jobs as a History Teacher, Football, Basketball, and Track Coach.  I also served a year in CAEP while I was getting my Administrative degree.  My wife is an Assistant Principal at Kempner High School and we are expecting our first baby in January.  We do not currently have a finalized name for our baby girl.  My hobbies include working out, playing various sports, video games, family time, and riding my Harley-Davidson.  I look forward to becoming an Associate Principal in the future.  I love working for Baines Middle School and interacting with the entire community!

Would you like to impact the future of a child by becoming a mentor? Baines Middle School is in the process of recruiting community mentors. The mentor program is designed to provide students with enriched life experiences, assist students with setting goals, and build school connectedness. Through the mentorship program, students build self-esteem, self-confidence, and they know that someone has taken a special interest in helping them succeed. Everybody needs somebody to care. For more information about the mentorship program, please contact Tijuana Frank at [email protected] or visit www.fortbendisd.com

DUE TODAY:  BMS TAKING REFERRALS FOR THE GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM
To refer your child for the Gifted and Talented Program, request a Parent Referral form from the Counselors' Office or download it from the district website at www.fortbendisd.com. Return the completed referral form to the Counselor's Office by September 25th.

LAST CHANCE! BOOK FAIR CLOSES TODAY
 AT 1:00 pm!
A big "Thank You" goes out to our many parent volunteers for their help with the book fair!

Baines Middle School is proud to once again seek the designation as a No Place for Hate school. This is a campaign created by the Anti-Defamation League to promote understanding and awareness to fight against prejudice and discrimination of all kinds. BMS has earned this distinction the last two years.

One of the first and most important steps in Baines Middle School's application to become No Place for Hate is to form a coalition.  The coalition should be made up of various adults including school faculty and staff members, administrators, parents, community leaders, or youth organizations. The purpose of the coalition is to oversee and guide the student body in completing a minimum of three activities to promote understanding and awareness of the diverse groups of people in our community and in our world. The coalition will meet two or three times during the course of the year.

If you are interested in serving on the coalition please e-mail or call Keith Fickel, Assistant Principal at Baines Middle School, with your name and contact information. Our first meeting will be Wednesday, October 14th, at 4:15 P.M. in the Baines Middle School Library. For more information about the No Place for Hate campaign in general please visit http://www.adl.org/regional/houston/.

7th GRADE ITBS TESTING
The 7th graders will be taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) on Tuesday, October 6th & Wednesday, October 7th. The ITBS is an achievement test that will provide information about student progress in reading, language, mathematics, social studies and science.  Testing will be done in advisory classes from 8:50-12:05pm on these days.

Please encourage your child to do his/her best.  ITBS results will be used for placement decisions in academic areas such as Algebra and ELA for next school year.  Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and has an adequate breakfast.

PTO INFORMATION

THOSE WINDOWS ARE NO LONGER A PAIN
!
The PTO paid to have the windows on the wall between the commons and the courtyard, plus a portion of the east wall windows, tinted.  The window tinting will help keep this previous "hot spot" cool and increase audio-visual presentation visibility in the commons area.  Sun Pro Glass Tinting cut the PTO a great deal ($3,050) and completed the work in record time.   This project benefits all the students, as they all spend time in this area throughout the school day.  Kudos to Sharon Leshikar, PTO Parliamentarian, and Kimberly Fenner, PTO President, for completing this long standing project.

Other great ways the PTO has utilized the fundraising dollars:
*Funded weight room equipment and sufficient
*Funding author visit on October 27th for 6th grade (BMS is covering author visit expenses for 7th & 8th grade later in year)
*Currently working on funding assistance for International Festival and Black History Program approved budgets and curriculum
*Funds have been approved and allocated for a die-cut machine for teacher workroom

Our long term goal:   A Running Track around the athletic field!

IMPORTANT! Fort Bend ISD POSTPONES public hearings for High School #11 and Elementary #45
The Board of Trustees held a workshop September 14 to review proposed recommendations for attendance zones for High School #11 and Elementary School #45.  After reviewing the recommendations, the Board asked the Administration to develop additional zoning plans for consideration.

Therefore, the public hearings to review proposed attendance zones for High School #11 and Elementary School #45 which were scheduled for September 29th at Hightower High School and September 30th at Schiff Elementary have been postponed to provide the Board with time to review other possible recommendations.

The date of the next Board Zoning Workshop and the public hearings will be publicized once dates have been confirmed. Please stay tuned to the district website at www.fortbendisd.com for the latest information.
