Music on the Lawn
| | The Friends of the Concord Free Public Library are pleased to present the 2010 summer Music on the Lawn series.
Bring your chairs, blanket, and a picnic - enjoy the music on the Main Library's front lawn!
All concerts are free and open to the public, and will be held on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. Reservations are not required. (Rain location: Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts on Stow Street or check the library home page for updates)
July 14 - Singer Veronica Robles and the colorful Mariachi Band will perform traditional Mexican music, original melodies and dance.
July 28 - Jah Spirit, the three time Boston Music Award Nominee Best Reggae band will entertain you with reggae music.
August 11 - Davis Bates and Roger Tincknell will celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of the United States in folk songs.

Adult Summer Reading Program Workshops

| The 2010 adult summer reading program will continue with these GREEN themed workshops this month.
Tuesday, July 20, 2010, 7:00 p.m. What does Green mean to you? Presented by Julie Vaughan, Main Library
The race to green is on! Join Senior Town Planner Julie Vaughan on an exploration through the various tools available for "carbon footprinting" the foods we crave, the cars we drive, the activities we enjoy, and the homes we cherish. Participate in a lively discussion that will demystify the term "carbon footprint" and reveal small behavior changes that can contribute to greening your personal imprint on the earth - and that may even save you money and keep you active at the same time! Thursday, July 29, 2010, 7:00 p.m. Composting Presented by Mark Hanson, Main Library
Composting kitchen waste is better for the environment than putting it in the trash or down a garbage disposal! This workshop will cover the hows and whys of composting. Learn all about the fertilizer value of leaves from various trees and other sources. Learn how to use ground limestone to balance the pH, encourage aerobic bacteria while discouraging anaerobic (odor causing) bacteria, and compost kitchen waste without odor or attracting animals. Enjoy a lively discussion about the practical applications of compost to a suburban property and to the environment. Mark Hanson is a Concord resident who has studied the hows and whys of composting for many years. |
Historic Concord

| The newest edition of Historic Concord and the Lexington Fight is now available. Published by the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library as a gift to the town of Concord on its 375th anniversary, the current edition retains Allen French's Brief History of Concord, but is otherwise a completely new and updated history and tour guide to Concord, Lexington, and the Battle Road that joins them.
The all-new guide was written by Leslie Wilson, Curator of William Munroe Special Collections of the Library, and includes both in-depth historical and tour information, and for the first time is illustrated with images from the library's collections, all in a completely new format.
Copies of the book are available for sale ($16.95 each plus tax) at the Main Library Circulation Desk, Concord Bookshop, Visitor Center and Concord historic sites.

Thank you, Concord! Book Sale Raises $18.600!

| The 2010 Friends Annual Book Sale held on June 12 was the best ever, raising more than $18,600 to buy library books, movies, CDs, and museum passes and to fund concerts, poetry readings, films, author talks, children's programs and other library activities. Many, many people who love the Library made this sale a success. Thank you for donating books. Thank you for volunteering. Thank you for shopping. [View Photos in Concord Journal] Book donations are gratefully accepted at the Main Library Reference Desk, Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donation receipts are available at the Reference Desk. Fall Adult Book Group

| The 2010 Fall book discussion group will meet on the fourth Tuesday morning of the month. All are welcome.
The first meeting will take place on September 28 at 9:30 in the Trustees Room and we will discuss The Given Day by Dennis Lehane.
Set in Boston at the end of World War I, this novel follows the experiences of two families caught in the political and social unrest of a country on the cusp of change. The book brings to life pivotal events (the flu pandemic and Boston Police strike ) and influential figures including Babe Ruth and Eugene O'Neill, as well as the hopes and tragedies of ordinary citizens caught in turbulent times.
