Editorial: Creating Your Vision
Welcome to the April 2012 edition of The Dive Industry Professional. We're getting ready for the Northwest Dive & Travel Expo and are excited to see all the Divers and Exhibitors from the Pacific North West. Regional Shows are very important to our Industry because they are the epicenter of a geographical area of the country. We were reminded of that when we ran a list of the 2012 exhibitors at the show and realized that although many were international in scope and exhibit at all the shows, there was an amazing number of local exhibitors that only exhibit at the Northwest Dive & Travel Show. So if you think that all shows are alike, think again.
Dive Industry Association and Dive News Network will host the second annual Industry Luncheon & Seminar for Dive Business Leaders attending the Dive & Travel Expo. It's a very positive step in the right direction when Industry Leaders get together and the topic is "Creating & Communicating an Industry Vision." It's even more significant when world-class companies like American Underwater Products, Constant Contact and Palo Alto Software sponsor the event ! So once again we see that progressive companies in Dive are learning new ways to build their products, reach their customers and run their business successfully. They are thinking and rethinking their business strategies and using modern tools to get the job done quicker and more efficiently. Progressive companies are also entering new market segments and profiting from strategic alliances with the Travel Shows and the Surf Expo. All of these efforts are a positive sign for our industry and Dive Industry Association is delighted to be on the cutting edge of reinventing a more powerful and successful dive industry. "Communicating Your Vision"

Every business has a purpose for being in business. That purpose is your vision and if you want your customers to know what your vision is, you have to tell them. So we are looking at a simple three-step process where we first define our purpose, articulate that into a reasonable vision and communicate that with our audience. Sounds easy enough.
Understanding your business well enough starts with knowing why you are in business in the first place. What is it you want to do for people? Do you want to manufacturer products, or distribute them, or resell them to the ultimate consumer? Or do you want to provide a service for people that has value to them? All of these questions are explored in the first two steps of the business start-up process called Personal Assessment and Feasibility Study.
