Healthy Skin in Your 20s,  30s,  40s and Beyond

Every decade brings on new challenges to staying young and beautiful. Our skin, with each passing year requires different things in order to fight aging. Follow some of these tips to keep your skin looking radiant throughout various stages of your life:

Skin in your 20s: Your skin tends to be more stable than in your teens, usually oiliness and spots will disappear. You really do not see any visible facial lines yet, but if you look closely you will notice your expression marks will start forming. Some men and women will continue to see some acne depending on hormonal changes and cravings. At this time, it is important to have a diet full of antioxidants like lutein, gogi berry, mangosteen, tomatoes and blueberries to support sun protection and skin elasticity. Drink lots of water and avoid smoking. Most importantly go to the spa and receive facials on regular basis.

Skin in your 30s: During your 30s, you'll begin to see potential overexposure to smoke, alcohol, pollution and UV light that occurred in your teens and 20s. You'll start to notice visible fine lines around the eyes and mouth and your cellular repair process begins to slow, which leads to weakened collagen. Skin may look duller and darker and may take longer to recover from late nights or stress. Spend time learning about what is good for your body. Choose foods that enhance your metabolism and energy, and provide beautifying properties from within. Supplement with antioxidants like pomegranate, grape seed, green tea and alpha lipoic acid, which provide protection from free radical damage (the rusting effect of our cells). Increase your intake of vitamin A, E and C for healthy looking skin and body.    Begin preventative care, use eye cream and protect your skin with the daily use of sunscreen. Visit the spa and discuss your needs with your esthetician.

Skin in your 40s: Wrinkles and spider veins will become more apparent during this stage of our lives if we did not protect our skin in earlier decades. Discoloration, uneven skin texture, dryness and dullness are more apparent. Avoid yo-yo dieting, which can contribute to dullness and create havoc on your hormones. Try portion control instead and always have a well-balanced breakfast. Individuals who eat breakfast tend to weigh less than those who skip it all together. Begin an strong anti-aging program for face and body in order to look your very best.

Skin in your 50s and 60s: Pigmentation and sagging skin are usually the biggest probles during thi stage of our lives. Unless you have exercised regularly, you will see the effects in loss of tone and muscle. Also cellular regeneration and circulation will slow causing flaky patches, dullness, goose pimples and fragile skin spots. Diet and exercise is very important to keep skin and muscles healthy. Increasing your protein and essential fatty acids like omega 3s are crucial in keeping bones and joints healthy. Adding supplements with antioxidants, essential fatty acids, phyto-nutrients, protein and minerals are very important to the health of your collagen (muscles, connective tissue, joints, skin, hair and nails). Join the membership program at your spa and receive facials at least once per month also use a great home care regimen to maintain healthier looking skin.

Through All Decades: Remember, that no matter your age, you are never too young or old to treat your skin to the care it deserves. Make sure that you are visiting your spa and or your wellness center to address specific areas of concern, such as eyes and lips, face body, hands and feet. Speak to your esthetician about any questions or concerns you have regarding your skin and keeping it looking its best.

3 Steps to Reduce Stress

Stress is an inevitable part of life...and it comes in many forms. We experience stress physically, mentally and even, environmentally. And although some stress in life is normal, too much of it in our lives can take a tremendous toll on our health and well-being. Specifically, stress causes an increase in the release of adrenaline into your system, which can slow digestion, cell repair and your immune system. Further, your heart rate and blood pressure can increase while the circulation in your extremities can become constricted. And if stress isn't managed properly, it can ultimately contribute to heart disease and cancer. I think it goes without saying: diminishing stress and its effects is an important part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Not only will reducing stress positively impact your health, but it will also increase your productivity, improve your relationships and help you have a more enjoyable life all around. This New Year, resolve to reduce stress and its impacts on your life. See the positive that comes out of doing so and you'll feel and look better than ever.

  1. Acknowledgment: Acknowledging what is causing you stress is the first step to understanding how to diminish it. Stress can become so "typical" in one's life, however, that it can become difficult to even know when you are under it. As a result, start paying attention to your reactions to different situation and to different people. Are you tense? Do you feel sick? Do you get a headache? Are you ultra sensitive? Do you feel anxious? Does something just not feel right? Maybe it is your work. Maybe it is your financial situation. Maybe your relationships are strained. Whenever you feel off or funny, acknowledge it.
  2. Journal/Document: When you feel these things, write in a journal your thoughts, your fears, your emotions and your physical reactions. Documenting these will help you to see patterns in your situations. You'll start to develop an increased awareness of what sets you off...and what causes your blood to boil. Even happy stress should be documented.
  3. Address the Stress: Once you can see a pattern or understand what is causing you to feel stressed, you can then address it. Realize, however, that some things are out of our control and instead of focusing on the situation we need to focus on managing the stress we feel. For those things you DO have control over, list the specifics of what makes you feel stressed and how you can resolve them. Maybe you need to delegate. Maybe you need to break the task up into smaller chunks. Maybe you have to reevaluate your expectations. For those things you DON'T have control over, however, build techniques into your life to reduce overall levels of stress and release the stress that does occur. For instance, practice deep breathing exercise with the use of essential oils. Consider taking a walk to temporarily get away from stressful situations. Minimize exposure to stressful individuals. Start meditating to clear your mind and relax. And, visit your spa for de-stressing treatments and programs.

Remember that taking care of yourself is a natural way to manage stress. Don't discount important healthy habits like eating right, exercising and getting enough sleep. All of these are important habits that help you naturally ward off the worst of stress.
