|Adkins Selected to Lead National State Government Organization
Former Kansas Legislator Selected Executive Director
of The Council of State Governments
LEXINGTON, Ky., Oct. 17, 2008--Former Kansas State Sen. David Adkins has been selected the new executive director of The Council of State Governments, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization serving all three branches of state government.
Adkins succeeds Daniel M. Sprague, who is retiring after 29 years with CSG, the past 19 years as executive director.
CSG national chair, State Rep. Kim Koppelman of North Dakota, made the announcement Friday, saying Adkins would start Nov. 3 at CSG national headquarters, based in Lexington, Kentucky.
"CSG is fortunate to have a person of David Adkins' ability taking the helm as the organization's new executive director," said Koppelman. "Dan Sprague leaves big shoes to fill, but David Adkins brings excellent qualifications and experience to this critical leadership role."
Adkins will be leaving his post as vice chancellor for external affairs at the University of Kansas Medical Center to assume his new duties at CSG, which has 220 employees in Lexington, Washington D.C. and four regional offices in Lombard, Ill., New York City, Atlanta and Sacramento, Calif.
"I believe in CSG and the power its members have to create the future America needs," Adkins said. "Through its regional structure, its multi-branch affiliations and its diverse leadership structure it has achieved a great deal in its 75 year history and I truly believe the possibilities are limitless."
Sprague was also pleased with the selection committee's choice to succeed him.
"I'm delighted to have a person of this caliber succeeding me at CSG," Sprague said. "I know David will bring high energy and vision to the challenges ahead for states."
Adkins, a graduate of the University Of Kansas School Of Law, was a Kansas State Senator from 2001 to 2005 and served in the Kansas House from 1993 to 2001. While in the legislature, Adkins was an active CSG member serving on the executive committee of the national organization and as chair of the Midwestern Legislative Conference of CSG. He also is an alumnus of CSG's Toll Fellows Leadership program, Class of 1993.
"David's familiarity with the organization will help him hit the ground running, as CSG seeks to fulfill its unique role of service to state government officials, throughout the nation," said Koppelman. "We look forward to working with David and welcome him as our new executive director."
His gubernatorial appointments in Kansas include chairman of the Kansas Advisory Group on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and a member of the Governor's Task Force on Higher Education.
Adkins, his wife, Lisa, and their daughter Nell will reside in Lexington.
