20,000th Refugee is Sponsored

From Vietnamese, to Bosnian, to Nepalese, and more!

RefugeeEarlier this month, the International Institute of St. Louis sponsored its 20,000th refugee. It is a milestone for the Institute as well as for St. Louis, a region that is more dependent than others on refugee arrivals to supplement our smaller than average immigrant base.

While a few Vietnamese were resettled in St. Louis by the Institute and local religious affiliates after the Fall of Saigon in 1975, substantial numbers did not start to arrive until spring of 1979. Then President Jimmy Carter launched a special resettlement program for Vietnamese Boat People resulting in more than 120,000 US arrivals in a mere 12 months.

Connecting Youth to the World
Gitana Productions Works With Refugee Teens

What happens when immigrant and refugee families are nestled in a community where their neighbors are socially isolated never traveling beyond 15 miles of where they live?

In September 2010 Gitana Productions, a nonprofit arts, and education organization asked such questions. They decided to start Global Education through the Arts in an apartment studio located in the Hodiamont/Amherst Neighborhood. Among the participants are many refugees, sponsored by the Institute.

The program uses drama, dance, and cultural diversity training to bring immigrant/refugee and African American youth together providing greater understanding and teamwork.

One of the highlights of the program is an annual tour of LIVING THE DREAM, a 45-minute play on nonviolence based on the principles of Mohandas Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King.

Students have successfully participated in Leadership programs at UMSL, vocational classes at Ranken Technical School and St. Louis Community College.

This year families were involved with the St. Louis Guitar Society, the St. Louis Civic Symphony, the Indian Cultural Center, and serving the homeless at New Life Evangelistic Center.

Gitana Productions, Inc. is dedicated to increasing cross-cultural awareness and collaboration through education, music, dance, and drama. Gitana events and programs are designed to promote global healing in the St. Louis region. For more information, visit www.gitana-inc.org or call Gitana Productions at (314) 721-6556.
