What happens when immigrant and refugee families are nestled in a community where their neighbors are socially isolated never traveling beyond 15 miles of where they live?
In September 2010 Gitana Productions, a nonprofit arts, and education organization asked such questions. They decided to start Global Education through the Arts in an apartment studio located in the Hodiamont/Amherst Neighborhood. Among the participants are many refugees, sponsored by the Institute.
The program uses drama, dance, and cultural diversity training to bring immigrant/refugee and African American youth together providing greater understanding and teamwork.
One of the highlights of the program is an annual tour of LIVING THE DREAM, a 45-minute play on nonviolence based on the principles of Mohandas Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King.
Students have successfully participated in Leadership programs at UMSL, vocational classes at Ranken Technical School and St. Louis Community College.
This year families were involved with the St. Louis Guitar Society, the St. Louis Civic Symphony, the Indian Cultural Center, and serving the homeless at New Life Evangelistic Center.
