Chairman's Message

Diane SummerhaysDear Members of the Chamber:

Greetings! I hope your 2009 is off to an energetic start.

If you're looking for a way to jumpstart your business exposure in the new year, do consider participating in our February Membership Luncheon and Business Showcase. This fantastic opportunity only comes around twice a year (in February and October). Showcase tables are going quickly, but there are a few spots left should you care to sign up (and we hope you do!).

I also want to personally invite each and every one of you to Chamber Day 2009. This is an all day event in our state's capitol where you meet with your Senators and Representatives, attend various hearings and committees, and let your voice be heard! Members of our very own Chamber have been key players in helping initiate legislation. I myself went last year and was amazed! This truly is an incredible benefit of Chamber membership... and of living in a democratic society. I hope you are able to join me and other Chamber members for the day! More information can be found below.

Thank you for allowing us to serve you!

Sincerely,

Diane Summerhays
Chair, Board of Directors

Andy Wappler, Puget Sound Energy

Andy Wappler

Andy Wappler, Senior Public Relations Consultant with Puget Sound Energy, will address global warming and renewable energy sources at the Southwest King County Chamber of Commerce February Membership Luncheon and Business Showcase. His topic is Cleaner, Greener, Smarter: Making Global Warming a Little More Local.

Andy Wappler joined Puget Sound Energy in February 2008 as part of the utility's effort to communicate the need for renewable energy and energy efficiency in order to meet the challenge of climate change. Certified by the American Meteorological Society, he is a graduate of the University of Washington and Northwestern University. By making some simple changes at home, he and his family have cut their electricity use by nearly 40 percent and their natural gas use by as much as 10 percent.

The luncheon will be held on Friday, February 13, 2009, 11:00 am - 2:00 pm, Cedarbrook Center, 18525 36th Ave. S, SeaTac. Showcase Table and lunch is $110. Lunch is $20 pre-paid by 2/12 or $25 at the door.

Special thanks to Puget Sound Energy for sponsoring this luncheon!

February Student of the Month: Vanessa Flores

Vanessa Flores

Meet Vanessa Flores, a senior at Foster High School. She is the February Student of the Month for the Southwest King County Chamber. She is also a Chamber Junior Ambassador, so be sure to say hi if you see her at any upcoming Chamber events!

Vanessa is President of Future Business Leaders of America. While at Foster High School she has been involved in National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, volleyball and tennis. She helped to jump start the Experience Academy Committee.

In her community she has helped with her church's women's shelter, KidsReach, church preschool and cleaning up the city of Tukwila. Vanessa has also worked at Target in food service and as a cashier. Currently she is working in retail at Skechers.

Each of her extracurricular activities has taught her team work, team effort, support, the meaning of family, independence and the benefits of hard work. After high school, she wants to attend Gonzaga University in Spokane. In the future, she hopes to own her own dentist clinic to help low income families.

Vanessa would like to thank the Chamber's SUCCESS Foundation and others who have been part of her journey in making this all possible: her family, Superintendent Burke, Mr. Boyce, Mr. Wright, and Ms. Morgan, Foster High School Teachers, Ms. Simpson and Achievers mentor Lisa Gallo.

Congratulations, Vanessa!

Metro's Proposed Bus Service Changes in Southwest King County

King County Metro Transit and Sound Transit are working together on possible changes to bus routes serving portions of Burien, Federal Way, Kent, SeaTac, Tukwila, and the Tukwila Sounder Station. The changes would be made to connect Metro buses with Sound Transit's Link light rail and Metro's new RapidRide service, and to improve overall bus service in southwest King County.

Link will provide frequent, fast, and reliable service between Sea-Tac International Airport, Tukwila, southeast Seattle, and downtown Seattle. RapidRide is Metro Transit's new, streamlined bus service that will provide frequent, all-day service in five high ridership corridors. The A Line will run between Tukwila International Boulevard Link Station and Federal Way on Pacific Highway S/International Boulevard (State Route 99) beginning in 2010.

Last fall, Metro asked community members what they thought about some suggested changes. More than 1,100 people returned questionnaires or commented in other ways. Most of the comments were about the proposed routes and service levels. People also expressed concerns and made suggestions about safety, fares, travel times, transfers, reliability, and frequency of service. After considering the comments, Metro revised many of its proposals.

For more information on the revised set of proposals and to fill out an online questionnaire go here.

Port of Seattle Update

Port of Seattle Commission Approves Design for 'Green' Project at Sea-Tac Airport to Reduce Air Emissions and Save Millions in Fuel Costs

On January 13, the Port of Seattle Commission approved funds to design a pre-conditioned air project for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save the airlines millions of dollars.

Once installed, the project is expected to reduce emissions by more than 69,000 metric tons per year and save airlines nearly $400,000 in the first year. The CO2 savings are equal to 2% of the yearly emissions from aircraft at Sea-Tac or the equivalent of taking 13,000 cars off the road.

The project will allow aircraft to hookup to pre-conditioned air provided by the airport at each gate. This allows planes to shutdown their auxiliary power units which spew CO2 gases and cost the airlines fuel to run. The cooled or heated air would be piped into the aircraft from a central utility plant at the airport.

"This investment lowers airline costs and reduces the airport's environmental footprint," said Port of Seattle Commission President Bill Bryant. "It is a win-win for all of us."

The project is estimated to cost just over $33 million. The FAA grant is anticipated to cover nearly $22 million. The rest will be paid through Airport Development Funds and a cost per enplanement increase to airlines of $0.12. This cost will be more than offset by decreased airline operating costs which could save over $19 million over the life of the project, based on fuel costs of $2 per gallon. If fuel costs rise again, the savings would be even greater.

"A centralized pre-conditioned air system is the most cost effective and energy efficient long term means of providing pre-conditioned air to gated aircraft" said Michael Feldman, Sea-Tac Airport Deputy Managing Director of Facilities & Environmental. "The positive effects also include reduced noise from aircraft while they are parked at the gates."

Complete design is scheduled by January 2010 with the start of construction anticipated in July 2010 and full completion of the project by December 2012.

City Beats - Burien

Burien
Town Square: Anyone who hasn't been to downtown Burien in the past year might not recognize it as the first buildings of the Town Square project move toward completion this spring. This includes the first residential/retail building, the roads and infrastructure that serves Town Square, the City Hall/King County Regional Library, and the central park and plaza. The Urban Partners condominium/retail building will welcome its first tenants this spring. The new Burien City Hall will open in mid-May followed by the new regional library in the building the library will share with the City. The new park should be ready in June. Plans are in the works for a grand opening celebration for the condominiums, City Hall/Library and Town Square Park in mid June.

Art Celebration: The Town Square site hosted its first "people event" on January 24 at the opening celebration of the Burien Interim Art Space. Different artworks will be displayed at the outdoor site over the next year until the second of 3 residential/retail building is constructed there. "The Passage", 30- and 20-feet-tall metal sculptures of a mother and child walking, was the first piece to be displayed. Fire performers entertained crowd enjoying the art celebration.

Traffic Cameras: Burien is joining the cities installing traffic cameras at signaled intersections to cut down on motorists running red lights. The cameras will begin taking pictures on March 1 at three intersections along 1st Avenue S: SW 148th Street, SW 152nd Street and SW 160th Street. There will be a 30-day warning period before the registered owner of the vehicle is sent an infraction which carries a $101 penalty. The cameras have been shown to increase public safety by forcing drivers to slow down and stop for red lights, preventing collisions. They also increase pedestrian safety.

Clean Sweep: Burien's annual spring cleaning, Burien Clean Sweep, is planned for Saturday, April 25. This is when citizen, business groups and members from other organizations such as churches all roll their sleeves up and pick up trash and other debris at assigned areas along streets, sidewalks and parks in downtown Burien and some neighborhoods. The day starts at 8 a.m. at the downtown Burien Fire Station and concludes there with a free lunch. People who have questions or wish to sign up should contact Discover Burien at (206) 433-2882.

Wii Tourney: I'm pleased to report that Burien Senior Program's Wii bowling teams finished 3rd and 4th place in a League Championship tournament on January 7. The competition was between 16 teams from 8 different cities at The Grand Casino in Tukwila, which provided big screens and the logistical support to host the event.

City Beats - SeaTac

Potential Federal Economic Stimulus Project: I-5/SR 509 Extension: As widely reported, discussions are underway in Congress to develop a recession fighting stimulus package for President Obama to sign soon after taking office. Investment in public infrastructure construction will be a significant component of the plan. It has not yet been determined the amount or how the funds would be distributed. The Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) is developing a list of regional significant and "shovel ready" projects in order to quickly respond to the anticipated stimulus legislation. Notable for SeaTac, the I-5/SR509 extension appears on their list. This investment would provide significant dividends by reducing congestion on I-5, providing a direct freight route between marine ports and the industrial South King County area and accommodating a direct connection from I-5 to Sea-Tac International Airport. According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, the project reduces travel time between Seattle and Tacoma up to 12 minutes. The PSRC Executive Board is expected to approve the list later this month. Other possible projects important to SeaTac may include runway reconstruction at the Airport and additional Light Rail construction through SeaTac to the south.

Rontra Freight to Lease up to 50,000 Square Feet at New Prologis Site in City of SeaTac: Rontra Freight announces they have signed a lease to be the first tenant in a new ProLogis development in the City of SeaTac. The company plans to initially occupy 35,000 square feet by March 1, 2009 and is already planning on an additional 15,000 square feet in the near future. "You can't beat the proximity to the airport at this location," said Art Stipan of Rontra Freight. "And we have a great working relationship with ProLogis as we already lease space in our Portland location with them." Rontra Freight employs 38 workers in their Seattle operation. They were previously located at another location in the City of SeaTac. They expect to be in the new space by the beginning of March. ProLogis is the world's largest owner, manager and developer of distribution facilities, with 548 million square feet (51 million square meters) of industrial space in 136 markets across North America, Asia and Europe. ProLogis leases industrial space to manufacturers, retailers, transportation companies, third-party logistics providers and other enterprises with large-scale distribution needs. Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, ProLogis is a Fortune 500 company and a member of the S&P 500. For more information contact Jeff Robinson, Economic Development Manager, at 973.4812.
