Celebrating Independence through Technology
by Kathy Montgomery
As Independence Day approaches in the U.S., the thoughts of many turn to the subject of freedom. Surely Americans have many freedoms for which to be thankful. Of course, computers seem like a trivial topic in light of the real reason we celebrate the Fourth of July. Still, the subject of "independence" led me to consider some technologies that have served to significantly free people's time and money in the last few years, even making possible new opportunities that might not have arisen otherwise.
Digital Cameras Yes, digital cameras have freed users from the expense of film processing. But thanks to an effectively infinite supply of digital "film," people have the flexibility to learn photography more quickly than before. Thus the door to this art form has been opened even wider to hobbyists and professionals perhaps looking for a new source of income or just enjoyment.
Social Media Advertising is no longer strictly the domain of marketing companies. Small businesses are able to actively develop word-of-mouth marketing by participating on social media web sites like Facebook and LinkedIn. Reaching out to new and existing customers online, small and large companies alike can expand their business practically for free. Mobile Phones More than simply a convenient way to communicate, mobile phones provide a degree of greater independence in that they offer an additional level of safety. Cell phones provide a way for kids to keep in touch with parents while out with friends. A breakdown on the side of the road becomes a little less stressful when a phone is always on hand to reach police or a towing service.
Chances are that at least one of these technologies will be part of your July 4th celebration. But don't forget to look back for a moment on the real reason we celebrate Independence Day. Happy Fourth!
