Prevent Claims! Tip
Outside Investigators:  When you need them, when you don't.
US Capitol Building at NightMay 28, 2008
Greetings!

Although you don't need to convene a Congressional Sub-Committee to investigate tough claims, you may need to bring in an outside investigator for certain types of claims.
Factors that May Trigger a Need
for Outside Investigative Help

Here are some tips to consider when thinking about outside investigative help.
  • Are the charges especially inflammatory?
  • Do they involve high level managers?
  • Have any lawsuits been threatened or filed?
  • Has the Human Resource or in-house counsel's office already been involved without a satisfactory resolution?
  • Could the charges result in negative publicity?
  • Is the matter time-sensitive?
Investigators must appear impartial at all times.  Human resource professionals and in-house counsel can sometimes be perceived -- rightly or wrongly -- as part of the problem, rather than a means to a solution.  An outside investigator may make more headway parsing out a claim.

Please don't hesitate to call if you have a question about investigations in general or about one you are currently handling.  We delight in more detailed discussions than our modest Tips provide.
Thank you as always for your support.  We look forward to returning the courtesy.
