 October is...
 National Cooperative Month

Co-op Month Logo Each October, cooperatives all across America celebrate the role, accomplishments and contributions of our nation's cooperatives. Observing National Co-op Month gives electric co-ops yet another reason to tell our members that they are part of something special.

At a time of increasing national concern about the economy, especially rising energy costs, we also must communicate the cooperative difference to decision makers at all levels whose actions affect our members and the communities in which they live and work. The cooperative difference defines who we are and what we can achieve: looking out for our members' best interests.

 Look What's New...
 Electronic Bill Statement Service

Personal Computer CHELCO is pleased to introduce the Electronic Bill Statement Notification Service (E-Billing). E-Billing gives our members the option of receiving their monthly electric bill statement via email instead of the traditional paper statement delivered by the United States Postal Service.

By participating in E-Billing, our members are helping to protect the environment by reducing the amount of natural resources required to service their account. Additionally, this service will help CHELCO reduce billing and postage costs.

If you are interested in taking advantage of this service opportunity, please visit one of CHELCO's six convenient area offices and complete a registration form. You may also download the registration form by clicking the link below and sending the completed form to CHELCO with your next bill payment. Please contact CHELCO's Member Service Department if you have any questions or would like further information regarding this service.

 Well pump problems:
 A hidden energy waster

Well Pump A leaky faucet or toilet can be more expensive in a house that gets water from a well instead of utility company. That's because a leak can cause the well pump to run almost continuously, wasting energy with every drip.

Repairing leaks isn't the only way to keep your pump in top shape. Regular maintenance not only can help your pump operate more efficiently, it can help extend the life of the equipment. A service technician should inspect your pump to see if it has fallen victim to either of these two major energy wasters:

  • The pressure tank is waterlogged. If it is, the pressure sensor inside the tank becomes overactive, causing the pump to start and stop continuously. Because the pump uses the most energy when it's starting up, such unnecessary cycling can put a drain on your energy bill.
  • The pump is too big. Many homes have three- to four-horsepower pumps, when they really need only one- to two-horsepower pumps. A properly sized pump can save about 100 kilowatt-hours of electricity a year.

 Recipe of the Month
 Mo's Sticky Ribs

Mo's Sticky Ribs With summer coming to an end and Labor Day festivities gearing up, here is an easy rib recipe that will be the hit of your holiday feast. This recipe is courtesy of Food & Wine and Fred Donnelly's Mogridder's BBQ in Bronx, New York.

For almost 4 years, Fred Donnelly's Mogridder's BBQ truck has sat in front of his auto repair shop feeding lines of hungry people while they waited for their vehicles to be repaired. Last October, Donnelly finally opened a place to sit and eat due to popular demand. These spectacular ribs are his number one seller.

Ingredients:
  • 2 1/4 pound(s) baby back ribs
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • Granulated garlic, for sprinkling
  • Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 1 12-ounce bottle of lager (or your favorite beer)
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup peach or apricot jam
  • 3 tablespoon(s) fresh lemon juice

Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. On a rimmed baking sheet, season the ribs with salt, pepper, and garlic. Drizzle with oil and scatter the cloves over the ribs and in the pan. Pour the beer over the ribs, cover with foil, and bake for 2 hours, until the meat is tender.
  2. Strain the pan juices into a saucepan. Whisk in the ketchup, jam, and lemon juice and boil over high heat until reduced to 1 1/2 cups, about 20 minutes.
  3. Preheat the broiler. Set the ribs meaty side down on the baking sheet, brush with glaze, and broil 4 inches from the heat for 7 minutes. Turn the ribs and brush with half of the remaining glaze. Broil for 10 minutes, until starting to char. Brush with the remaining glaze and broil until browned, 10 minutes. Let rest for 10 minutes and serve.
