Estoy jugando softbol en Cuba!

As you are reading this, I'm in Cuba playing softball.


Sixty slow-pitch softball players from the Eastern Massachusetts Senior Softball Association are in Havana for a weeklong series of exhibitions against Cuban opponents of - I hope - roughly equal age and ability. We are made up of four teams, ranging in age from 50 to 74, including two women players.

Our trip is unusual, but not unprecedented. Ten years ago, the Baltimore Orioles played an exhibition in Havana. To get permission to go to Cuba, our softball league applied for a license from the Office of Foreign Assets Control, under the U.S. Department of the Treasury. In 2008, 21 applications were approved for travel to Cuba for "public performances, athletic and other competitions,'' one of several, but limited categories under which travel to the island may be allowed.

Our exhibition games in Cuba will give us the opportunity to play a game loved by both countries. And here's hoping, that in some small way, we can play a part in promoting the understanding and good will that will soon lead to the unfreezing and better relations between our governments.

Salaries Unfreezing, Retention Worries Up.
What About Hiring, Benefits, Layoffs and Hours?

A new study from Watson Wyatt and published in ERE Daily, has pretty good news for individuals who miss their old salaries and 401(k) matches, and shows that businesses are just as worried about keeping people as they were before everything went negative.

Please let me hear from you on how you and your organization are handling the following:

Salaries
54% of the companies that have made salary freezes are now planning to restore them over the next six months, according to the Watson Wyatt survey of 201 large U.S. employers. That's a big-time improvement. In August, 33 percent said they were going to unfreeze salaries. In June, 17 percent said they would.

Meanwhile, almost half of companies plan to reverse hiring freezes in the next six months.

Retention
Take the percentage of surveyed employers (26%) who now say they are "significantly more concerned" about retention of key employees than they were before the economic crisis hit and the percentage (39%) who are "slightly more concerned" - add them together, and you find that almost two-thirds are more concerned about top-talent retention than before.

Hiring
Almost all companies have made offers to new hires in the past three months, and the vast majority anticipates making offers in the next three months. However, approximately one-fifth (20%) still anticipate making layoffs in the remainder of 2009 or in 2010. This number is significantly less than six months ago, but reinforces that companies are at different stages in a recovery that promises to be uneven.

Benefits
According to the survey, "of those reversing reductions to 401(k) matches, 70% will restore the match to its previous level." Many of those reversals are planned for some time over the next year. On the other hand, the benefits news for employees is bad when it comes to healthcare. Watson Wyatt says that of the companies that have increased employees' contributions to healthcare premiums, two out of three say those increases are here to stay.

Layoffs
More than one in five companies think they're going to do layoffs during the rest of 2009 and 2010. At least that's better than in April, when almost 50 percent said they were planning layoffs.

Worker Hours
More than 80 percent of employers that instituted a reduced workweek expect to reinstate full weeks in the next 12 months. Most of them plan to bring back the hours over the next six months.
