Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

Late Summer 2012

Find. Does it imply something lost? Or perhaps it conjures up images of a pleasant surprise.

Now that it's August, you might be hoping to find more time to play. Or maybe you're eager to send the kids back to school and get into a routine again. Whatever your wish, here's to taking some time during these last days of summer to discover it.

As you consider your options, here are a few things we're finding noteworthy right now.

Try This
Lost and Found

ImaginFind my iPhonee the unthinkable: Your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Mac is lost or stolen. Now what? Ta-da! The free Find My iPhone app lets you use another iOS device to find your missing device and protect your data. From the Apple iTunes Store, simply install the app on another device and it locates your missing device on a map. Then you can choose to display a message, play a sound, remotely lock your device, or erase all your data.

Metadata Makes Content Useful

We've entered an era of "big data" -- a time where so much data is collected that it could fill the Library of Congress thousands of times over every day. We're talking petabytes of data ... like all the tweets related to the Olympics, all the daily Facebook posts around the world, or all the transactions Amazon.com handles.

In your organization, you may not be creating petabytes of data, but one thing is clear: You need to be smarter than ever about the content you do create so you can reach the right audience and your revenue goals. Where to start? Metadata. Data about data.  Metadata describes something (a video file, a photo) and helps identify information. If you want your website and your content to be accessible, searchable and useful for the intended audience, you need to include pertinent metadata when you create that content. It's a matter of competitive advantage or maybe even competitive necessity.

Word Wise
We Used to Just Call it "Writing"

You may be hearing communicators talk a lot about content strategy. This is one of marketing's big buzz words for 2012 -- and rightly so -- with its emphasis on defining and delivering the content your audience needs. There are related terms that you may have heard such as content curation, which is the process of identifying relevant content for your audience from multiple sources, modifying or editing it to reflect audience needs, and delivering it to the appropriate channels. (Exciting stuff ... at least we think so.) Or you may have seen the term content mapping, in which we inventory the existing content and match it to the needs of the audience at all points of interaction. These are all relatively new ways to describe longstanding content deliverables. Whatever you call them, we find them all fun!
